Benny Newsome was born August 22, 1991. He was a happy, bubbly baby which carried over into childhood. Benny was described by many as a loving, caring, and compassionate person who always had a smile on his face and a kind word to say.
Benny was also an avid athlete. He was not considered big but he had a strong, muscular body and was fast as lightning. He participated in many team sports … volleyball, basketball, baseball and track. His first love however was baseball. Benny played for the 13 year old, Rip City Traveling Baseball team. There was nothing like watching him on the field of play. He always was the hardest working competitor and the effort he put forth was seen in everything he did.
On June 16, 2005 the Newsome’s family lives were changed forever. Benny was 13 years old when he was involved in a fatal car accident. While his mother Deb, his brother Tyler and Benny were driving through Iowa en-route to a tournament in Nebraska, something happened to the Newsome’s SUV causing their vehicle to veer out of control. The sports utility vehicle flipped multiple times, crossing over oncoming traffic on I-80, and coming to rest in a ditch. Deb was severely injured sustaining a broken neck, knee and wrist while Tyler suffered a broken left hand. Benny never recovered from his head injuries.
The Sparks Travelers Baseball Organization would like to dedicate this tournament in the memory of Benny Newsome as the Benny Newsome Memorial Classic Tournament. Fundraising proceeds will go to The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Illinois. The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy.
The Sparks Travelers Baseball Organization would like to thank you for your donations.
