    Team History

In early spring of 2005 Tony Refino, Vern Lomba, Steve Horgen, Ken Enos and Rich Whitlock came together in Cumberland R.I. and decided to form a new flag football team each player had at one point played on different teams and wanted to form a team that could compete as well as have fun in the now dismantled “RI Flag Football League”. This team would be called the “Misfits” (at the time all the players had come from other teams). After the spring session concluded a new league was formed in Warwick, R.I called “New England Flag Football Association” (NEFFA). The Misfits at the time had gained sponsorship from two places Coca-Cola of Providence and Tri-State Livery Service, owned by Jim Melia our own offensive linemen who had played on the Misfits. A shortage of players on the team forced the Misfits to merge with a new outdoor team named the “Rhode Warriors” whom had also needed more players, with the merger a name change came into affect the team would be called the (Coca-Cola) Rhode Warriors. In the fall and winter of 2005 the Rhode Warriors played in Division II and made it into the play offs and shocked NEFFA and won the first D-2 Super Bowl upsetting the (Johnson and Whales) Red Storm. In the spring of 2006 after serious thought and talks among the team captains Rick Flammand and Jim Melia each team agreed to split ways, from this split the Undertakers where formed.

The Undertakers where formed with the intentions of building a family like environment and playing strong football win or lose. In their first season they fell short of returning to the Super Bowl with a loss to the Red Storm in the semi finals. Then in the winter of 2006 the Undertakers again called for another merger this time with the Cumberland Muckaneers, the Mucks had been a staple in RIFFL as well as NEFFA and this merger would benefit both teams the Mucks needed younger players and the Undertakers need some experience. This time Jim Melia decided to hand over the personnel and daily duties of runnig the team to Vern Lomba. Since the merger the Undertakers have been to the semi finals twice and had two Super Bowl apperances and one victory (as of spring ’08).

Today the Undertakers are now part of the United States Flag and Touch League and have competed in several NEFFA/USFTL sanctioned tournaments and have won one tournament that was held in Hartford Ct. in 2008 (with the help of Willie Edwards and the Silverbacks) and in January of 2009 the Undertaker name was sent down to compete in the national eight man tournament held in Florida. This was a joint effort of three teams the Ciccone Outlaws, The Rhode Warriors and a few Undertakers the end result was a third place finish. Spring of 2009 the Worcester Undertakers and RI Undertakers teamed up the Silverbacks to create another branch in the family tree.
