Rules for the 2007 Season
East Coast Amateur Baseball League – 2007 Rules Update
The ECABL operates as a division of Boston Amateur Baseball League, Inc., a non-profit organization chartered in Boston, Massachusetts in 2003. The league’s mission is to provide a place for baseball players to continue to participate beyond school-based teams and as an alternative for the many players unable to compete in the highest-level, competitive leagues.
The league fosters a competitive and gentlemanly approach to the game we all love, baseball. All players are expected to respect opponents, umpires, and the neighborhoods in which we play.
The league follows Major League Baseball rules with the following exceptions:
1. An extra hitter is allowed in the lineup. This is optional for each team. A pinch hitter can replace the extra hitter. The extra hitter is not allowed to enter the game as a fielder, unless an injury forces out any and all available players.
2. The designated hitter is allowed in the lineup. This is optional for each team. The hitter can hit for any player in the lineup. This is different from the MLB rule. The DH may be put into the field, but a player must be removed from the lineup and then the DH spot is lost and the player becomes a regular player.
3. Games are seven (7) innings and must be completed within three (3) hours. No inning will start after the third hour. Umpires have discretion for start on later innings when a field lighting (curfew) issue may be involved.
4. Mercy rule – A game will be called if one team is leading by twelve (12) or more runs after five (5) at bats for the trailing team or five (5) completed innings.
5. There is no courtesy runner rule.
6. Pitching substitution follows Major League rules. A pitcher must be removed after two (2) visits by the manager in the same inning. If this happens, the pitcher may move to another position, but can never return to pitch. A pitcher, who is changed between innings or after just one trip to the mound, can move to another position and still return as a pitcher later, but not in the same inning he was removed from the mound by the manager.
7. A pitcher must be removed from the game if he hits three (3) batters in one (1) inning or if he hits a total of four (4) batters in one game.
8. Playoff format – All teams make the playoffs. Teams will compete within their six team division for their respective pennants and the two Divisional Champions will play for the East Coast League Championship.
9. Division format – Top two teams receive a bye in the play-in round. Teams 3 through 6 play a one game elimination to advance to division semi-finals. Winners of play in face top two teams by remaining seeds (highest play lowest). Division semi finals and division finals are best 2 out of 3 series. Division pennant winners play a best of five series for the Championship.
10. No hidden ball trick.
11. A player must play in at least eleven (11) games to be playoff eligible. A pitcher must make an appearance in at least seven (7) games to be playoff eligible.
12. At least one week notice is required to cancel and/or reschedule games. Please call Greg Brodeur to make these changes.
13. All players must sign a team waiver. Team waiver to be completed and handed in by team managers.
14. Forfeits and rainouts – Teams are responsible to call umps and email Dan Daly. For rainouts at Chelsea High, teams must call Moe and make him aware of the rainout.
15. All rainouts must be rescheduled within to weeks or the game will result in a loss.
16. Every Sunday, please email Jim Cattaneo the game results for the week.
17. If a team forfeits two games, it could result in expulsion.
