KENNY KRAMEK SHINES IN SENIOR ALL STAR GAME
May 31, 2002  --   Poolesville Center Fielder Kenny Kramek went 2 for 3 (two singles) playing in center field as the National team beat the American team 14-2. Coach Hurd, who led the Nationals from the sideline, had mixed emotions..."it was a great game but sadly, Kenny Kramek may be the last Poolesville athlete to wear the Indian uniform."

    More post season Indian news...

Poolesville ranked 6th in the Top High School Baseball Teams in Thursday's Frederick News Post. Also, The Montgomery County Journal has published their final poll and the Indians received honorable mention just missing the top ten at 12th. Honorable mention placings are by number of votes received.

...From The Gazette...Catoctin Pulls A Fast One On Poolesville
May 22, 2002  --   Catoctin pulls a fast one on Poolesville

The Poolesville baseball team came close, very close, to earning its first state semifinal berth in school history but a stray fastball in the top of the seventh denied the team once again.

The Indians jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in Friday's Class 1A South Region championship, but second-seeded Catoctin rallied to win the contest in the seventh inning when Poolesville relief pitcher Jon Masden hit a batter with the bases loaded allowing the Frederick County school a 5-4 win.

Catoctin was to play Rising Sun, which won the North Region title, Tuesday in a 1A state semifinal contest.

Top-seeded Poolesville finished the season with a 10-7 record.

"Jon obviously felt bad about the situation but I told him it's a team game," Indians coach Larry Hurd said. "I'm proud of them. The seniors really stepped up. We did outstanding."

Things looked good for Poolesville in the early going as it scored two runs in the first inning and one in the third and fourth innings to open up a three-run lead. Brad Roush (.268 batting average) nailed a double to score Kenny Kramek (.395 BA, 17 runs batted in) and Joe Wheeler (.348 BA) to account for both first inning runs. Wheeler also doubled in the first.

Starting pitcher Jimmy Ward (.323 BA) drove in the team's next run in the third inning with a single and Andrew Howard blasted his second home run of the season in the fourth.

Catoctin came back to tie the contest in the fifth against Ward and Masden (2-2) and then worked the bases full to score the game-winning run in the seventh. Poolesville went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning.

Ward worked four innings on the mound, allowing three runs on four hits with five walks and a strikeout. Masden pitched the final three innings, allowing two runs on four hits while walking three and striking out two.

The disheartening loss followed last Wednesday's 11-6 regional semifinal victory over Baltimore's Dunbar. Masden crushed a three-run, first-inning home run to spark the team's potent offensive attack. Kevin White (.361 BA, 13 RBI), Masden and Roush had two hits apiece in the win.

Andrew Howard (5-2) worked five innings to earn the victory on the mound, allowing all six runs. Andrew Ramey worked two innings of scoreless relief to close out the game.

    INDIANS LOSE 5-4 IN A NAIL-BITER
May 18, 2002  --   Poolesville ended their 2002 Season going down 5-4 to Catoctin in the 1A South Regional Final at PHS Field. Coach Hurd reflected on the Season after the game, "We proved that our program is first class. We can play with anybody in our region. I am so proud of the kids, especially the Seniors. This was a well played baseball game. Catoctin is a great team. We played well and they played well. They won...they deserve it."

The Indians took an early lead and were up 4-1 on a towering home run by Andrew Howard(photo). Catoctin rallied for 3 runs in the 5th as reliever Jon Masden took over for starter Jimmy Ward. Both teams were scoreless in the 6th, but with two out in the top of the 7th, Catoctin began the last rally. With bases loaded, a hit batsman forced the final run. The Indians were 3 up three down in their half of the 7th as the game ended.

A great season!! The last game was disappointing, but finishing at 10-7 on the year was the result of an excellent Indian team.

Frederick News-Post Story ( Cougars Hit States)
    May 18, 2002  --   Cougars Hit States
    By Joshua R. Smith
    Fredrick News-Post Staff

POOLESVILLE — To the chagrin of his teasing teammates, Catoctin catcher Zac Ausherman admitted it hurt a little.

In actuality, it probably felt pretty darn good.

Tied at 4 in the top of the seventh inning with two outs and the bases loaded, Ausherman was plunked in the shoulder by Poolesville reliever Jon Masden.

The hit-by-pitch awarded the Cougars the deciding run of a 5-4 victory in the Class 1A South Region Championship Friday, launching Catoctin into its first state tournament.

The second-seeded Cougars, who trailed the No. 1 seed Indians 4-1 going into the top of the fifth, face either Rising Sun or North East-Cecil at 4 p.m. on Tuesday at McCurdy Field.

It was the third straight day Catoctin had come from behind for a playoff win, having knocked off Oakland Mills on Wednesday and Brunswick on Thursday to earn a spot against Poolesville in the final.

"We made it hard didn't we?" Catoctin coach Mike Franklin said. "Just like (Thursday), I think the kids are capable of reaching down and scoring at any time. They normally execute very well."

This one, however, had to be the most satisfying.

Following the win — after the Cougars (14-9) participated in two World Series worthy celebrations, an awards presentation and a water-drenching of coach Mike Franklin — Ausherman couldn't recall much about the short plate appearance that put his team ahead for good.

Masden loaded the bases by allowing a single to Jason Johnson, hitting Chad Wolfe and walking Jim Swanson. He then hit Ausherman with the first pitch of his at-bat, sending Johnson trotting home with a smile on his face.

"It all just happened so fast, I don't know. ... (It hurt) a little," said Ausherman, who then altered his comment after Johnson and Cougars pitcher Chris Kaleo immediately began to poke fun at him. "No, no, no."

In any event, it was all the Cougars would need. Kaleo, who came in after Catoctin starter T.J. Eiker fell behind 2-0 four batters into the first inning, needed just five pitches to record the final three outs of the game.

Before the final frame began, the Catoctin infielders — as usual — gathered on the mound for a few words.

"I was zoned in on the mound. Everybody was fired up," said Kaleo, who tossed 6 2-3 innings, allowing two runs and four hits with four strikeouts and one walk. "We said, 'Calm down, get three outs and take home the plaque.'"

Seeing his first extended action in a month, Kaleo used a masterful slider to keep Poolesville (10-7) from pulling too far ahead. After Andrew Howard belted a solo home run to left field to give the Indians a 4-1 lead in the fourth, Kaleo didn't allow another base runner.

"(Kaleo) was throwing a hard slider low and away and they were having difficulty adjusting," Franklin said. "Chris hasn't pitched a lot the last month. He's the victim of (us) having a really good pitching staff. He could've been dejected. But he's our captain and the most positive guy on the bench. He's just dying for that chance."

Kaleo faced the minimum nine batters over the final three innings and induced six fly outs, the last being a pop up to Ausherman in foul territory to end the game.

"He just got them to hit pop ups," said Johnson, who went 3-for-3 and also scored the tying run in the fifth.

Poolesville took a 2-0 lead in the first on RBI doubles by Joe Wheeler and Brad Roush, which signaled an abrupt end to Eiker's day. Each team scored a run in the third and the Indians extended their lead to 4-1 on Howard's blast.

But the patient Cougars — who had trouble manufacturing runs early in the game — struck back in the fifth when the hard-throwing Masden came in for Poolesville starter Jim Ward, who controlled the Cougars with a less-than dominant repertoire.

With two outs, Johnson drove in Danny Novak with a single before Wolfe ripped a two-run triple to deep center field, evening the score at 4.

Swanson grounded out to end the inning, but just 22 Kaleo pitches later, the Cougars were bound for the state tournament — not before tackling and piling on top of Franklin.

"I've been waiting three years for that," he said.

Kaleo is also a three-year vet, and he couldn't have been more happy Friday.

"Everything is coming together: Speed, defense, hitting, pitching," Kaleo said. "For me, I've been here three years, it's about time. It's one heck of a way to end my career."

Said Ausherman: "It's not over yet."

INDIANS WHACK DUNBAR IN SEMI-FINAL 11-6
May 16, 2002  --   Poolesville gets a trip back to the Regional Final after a 4 year absence on Friday with an 11-6 win over Dunbar of Baltimore yesterday at Pooolesville. Dunbar jumped on top 1-0 in the top of the first but Jon Masden put the Indians on top for good with a 3 run homer over the left center wall. Kevin White and Brad Roush each had two hits in the win. Andrew Howard picked up his 5th win getting relief help from freshman Andrew "Wild Thing" Remy in the final two innings. After the game, Coach Hurd commented, "We did just enough to win today. I wasn't pleased with how we went into the game with a lack of focus but we managed to pick things up a bit. We got the big blast from Jon and solid pitching from Andrew but if we are going to win Friday we are going to need a better performance all the way around."

The Indians play Friday against Catoctin in the Regional Final. Game time is 4pm at PHS. Picture above is Jimmy Ward scoring one of the 11 Indian runs.

INDIANS MATURE AS POST SEASON NEARS

    (Poolesville's Kenny Kramek )

Poolesville baseball coach Larry Hurd has coached essentially the same team the past few years but one key ingredient has turned two years of disappointment into what could be the program's finest season.

Monday's pre-game festivities showed exactly what that new ingredient was as Hurd announced and spoke about his numerous seniors who have given the Indians much-needed leadership. The team had just one senior on last year's squad and a host of youngsters two seasons ago.

"A lot of these guys got older," said Hurd, whose seniors helped pull out a 3-2 home victory over Whitman Monday afternoon. "I've been playing with sophomores and juniors. For two years I've had the same kids but now they're seniors and they've done a heck of a job. You win nine games against much bigger competition, that's something to be proud of. All of our games are against teams that are of a higher classification."

Those nine victories through Monday come after two straight losing seasons. The Indians compiled a 7-11 record two years ago and fell back to 6-10 during the 2001 campaign.

The continued improvement of players such as Kenny Kramek (.429 batting, 16 runs batted in, 22 walks), Andrew Howard, Brad Roush, Tim Orr, Jimmy Ward (.381 BA), Joey Wheeler and Teddy Newman has helped the program reverse course. Their play has guided Poolesville to the top seed in next week's 1A South Region tournament.

With that top seed, the Indians received two byes into the semifinals, giving them a quality chance to reach the state playoffs for the first time in school history.

"We're definitely a year older," Kramek said. "We only had one senior on the team so we were making the young mistakes and arms at short weren't as strong. We worked hard this summer. A lot of people played baseball this summer. We've been coming out and working hard. We've been hitting the ball.

"We're making smarter moves. Last year was disappointing. We would lose these games [like against Whitman]. We would make the error. This year we're making the plays. It's definitely a lot more fun to win too."

Down 2-0 in the bottom of the seventh, the Indians rallied for three runs on three hits, two walks and a wild pitch. Wheeler started the rally with an infield single. Ward then smashed a long single off the right-field fence to move Wheeler to third base.

"It was a fastball on the outside corner so I just went with the pitch," Ward said. "I struck out twice early in the day and just came through in the end."

With runners on first and third, Whitman Kevin MacIntyre, who earned the loss, allowed Wheeler to score on a bad pickoff move to third base. Ward moved to second. Roush then worked a walk to put the winning run on base.

Kramek kept things going with a single to right field. The groundball was hit at Vikings second baseman Dan Engelstad but a sharp bounce took the ball into right field, scoring Ward to tie the game at 2-2.

MacIntyre was then lifted for Nate Linden to face sophomore Kevin White. The next pitch by Linden, however, got away from Whitman catcher Mike Berlin and rolled to the right side of the backstop. Berlin got to the ball quickly but his throw back to Linden wasn't fast enough to stop Roush from scoring the game-winning run.

"That's a big win for us," Hurd said. "That's a 4A team. They've beaten some good teams. They showed a lot of heart coming back in the seventh inning and I think that's the kind of baseball team we are. We're scrappy and we're going to give it our all until the end."

For Whitman, the loss was another in a long line of disappointing finishes as it is in the same position Hurd's crew was in the past two years. The Vikings finished the regular season with a 3-13 record.

"We have been a very erratic team," Whitman coach Jim Kuhn said. "We're not playing with a lot of confidence. We've played very poorly at times to be honest."

Kuhn's team was able to capitalize on Poolesville's early mistakes to take that 2-0 lead. Englestad reached on an error and then scored on another one to give his team a 1-0 first inning lead. Tyler Lazear made it a two-run lead in the top of the fourth, scoring on a groundout after walking to start the inning.

We are going to take a short break and come back Monday to prepare for Gaithersburg."

OUCH! INDIANS FALL 12-5 IN SPRING TOURNAMENT

    COACH HURD READY FOR 2002
March 21, 2002  --   Recently the reporter caught up with Coach Larry Hurd in the hallway for a few quick comments on the 2002 Indians Baseball.

REPORTER: Coach, you're going into your third season at Poolesville. How do you assess your program over that period?

CH: In the three years I have been the head coach at Poolesville HIgh School, the baseball team has made great progress. We have always been competitive with a young team, but now there are some upperclassmen taking leadership roles and the team should benefit from that. I see the team winning this year.

REPORTER: Montgomery County has some very competitive high school baseball. What is your preview of the season and who are the teams to beat?

CH: The county should be very good this year. It will be a battle royale. Quince Orchard and Springbrook are just two of the teams that should be outstanding this year. Damascus is consistent year after year and will always be strong. In our division, I feel that it is up for grabs. The division has some strong teams in it, but I think our team will compete well and will be right in the thick of it at the finish.

REPORTER: Much is said every year about the tough schedule The Indians endure for such a small school. How does it look this year?

CH: The schedule is tough but better than the past few years. Damascus was dropped but Gaithersburg was added. We play Wheaton and Rockville twice. We still have Watkins Mill and Quince Orchard. Overall, I feel good about it.

REPORTER: Let's focus on the team itself. What has to happens for the Indians to have a big season?

CH: After the scrimmages, I feel confident with our defense. I think our infield is strong and our outfield has improved greatly in the last week of work. I think if we are going to struggle anywhere it will be at the plate. We are going to have to find ways to score runs. We have not been able to sting any hits together in scrimmages. The last two scrimmages only produced two runs. Granted Quince Orchard and Springbrook are loaded pitching wise, but for us to get where I want us to be we need to put the ball on the bat. This could be the most complete team that I have had here at Poolesville. WE are definitely better defensively than we have been in the past. WE need for our better hitters to step up and hit the ball and that will make us even better. A reasonable expectation is to win more games than we lose this year. That would be a turnaround for the Poolesville Program. I would like to have a winning record and possibly contend for the Division title.

RE-USE IS ALWAYS WELCOMED AND APPRECIATED!

Editor's Note: Message To Players From Joe Bosnick
March 13, 2002  --   "congratulations on doing so well in your first scrimmage. It looks like you are going to have a great year. Don't forget why you play the game. It's got to be one of the best things to spend time on. Enjoy it while you can. I woke up on March 1, and the first thing I thought was "holy smoke, it's baseball season! I spent the rest of the day in a classroom learning about the Javelin (anti-tank weapon). At 1430, I thought, "well, they're taking the field." I was jealous. My point is, some of you will be able to go on and play baseball in college, and who knows, maybe one of you will play it for a living. But the rest of you will not get that opportunity. So remember that everytime you go out on the field you have to give the game EVERYTHING you've got. Good Luck!! I hope you have a great season." Joe Bos
