2008 Spring Season Preview
As the Las Vegas Zone Baseball League prepares to enter it’s 6th season of play, here is a short preview of the upcoming 2008 Spring Season:
Returning Championship Contenders:
Southwest Valley Spartans: Manager Colin McGrane brings a dominant 1-2 punch with his pitching staff and balanced lineup to the ZBL. After being swept out of the semi-finals in the Fall Season, this team has only one goal, winning the championship.
Sin City Devils: Tom Pulcini leads this team into the Spring Season as the longest established team in the ZBL. After a disappointing Fall Season, this team has rebuilt and is coming off of a strong showing as the Silverado Champions in the Winter Season.
Assassins: The Fall Season Recreational Champions are looking to win the overall Spring Championship this season. This team could run a clinic on how to conduct drafts, as they once again have replenished their roster. This will be the Assassins 3rd season of play.
Teams Likely to Improve:
LV Bulls: The LV Bulls were a serious contender in the Fall Season, and has added to its already solid roster. Can they compete with some of the big boys? Their tough schedule will allow them to prove themselves early.
Lobos: Formerly known as the Cobras, this team made it to the Elite Finals last season. How can you improve on that? Adding players like Adrian and Ernie Gutierrez make that possible.
Green Valley High Rollers: Adding pitcher Sam Calhoon has turned this team into a contender and has allowed James Tierney the opportunity to move from pitcher to third base, solidifying the defense. The #2 ranked team coming out of the Winter Season, this team should double its win total.
New Teams:
Yesco: Tyler Kersten is building this team from scratch and feels that the team will need a few weeks to come together as a unit. Early indications are that this team will be in the hunt for a playoff spot.
Mustangs: They participated in our Winter Season, but this is their first full season of play with the ZBL. If they can add one more pitcher, this team may be in the title picture.
Nellis Raptors: The Air Force will seek to be high flying, and hit bombs as they hope to compete for the playoffs. The team is confident that they will be on top when all is said and done.
Hit Men: A team started and operated by the league, they may start off slow, but look to have enough talent to be competitive. It looks like pitching depth may be a strength for this team.
