In the beginning I would recommend going to a running specialty store and getting fitted for proper training shoes and spikes. These stores will analyze your feet and suggest shoes that are made for your feet. You will have the opportunity to try on a lot of shoes to find the pair that feels the best. Once you find out what kind of shoe is best for your feet then in the future you can find them discounted online or at other stores. I would not recommend just going into Kohl's or other big retailers and just buying shoes that "look good." Foot injuries can develop from poor fitting shoes or shoes not made for your foot. It is suggested that training shoes last about 300 - 500 miles of running then need to be replaced.

Fleet Feet Fleet Feet is located at 1174 East Powell Road in Lewis Center. The staff is very knowledgeable about their inventory, especially if you need to get fitted for shoes. They also have sidewalk sales from time to time where running gear is discounted and some styles of running shoes are $50. They are open seven days a week.also offers a convenient rewards card where for every $250 you spend, you get a $25 credit.
They have a good incentive program and a 20% discount. Tell them you are a Hayes runner and they will donate 15.00 to our booster program.
Columbus Running Company has three locations in Columbus. This includes one on Perimeter Dr in Dublin, a second on Hill Rd. in Pickerington, and a third on State St. in Westerville. Each location is open seven days a week and is staffed by experienced runners. Columbus Running Company carries running apparel, shoes, accessories, and various miscellaneous running items.
CRC are very active in promoting high school teams, and the local running scene.
Front Runner is located at 1344 Lane Avenue in Columbus near the Ohio State campus. Front Runner carries a huge selection of running merchandise from shoes, apparel, and a good variety of running gear. They are an authorized dealer of Vibram shoes and the staff is great in helping you choose the correct barefoot shoes for your personal situation and for the best fit.
They also carry the Injinji socks for the Vibram shoes. Front Runner is open seven days a week and is staffed by runners who not only have information about their merchandise, but also have personal experience with the items that are stocked.
Road Runner Sports - Im not very familiar with this store in Worthington located at 535 Lakeview Plaza Blvd. They are a national chain though so that might have some advantages.
These stores are generally going to be more knowledgeable than even sporting goods stores like Hibbets or Sport's Authority. But once you have some knowledge then you can find your shoe just about anywhere.
