    Falcons Don't Go Down Easily

    by James Peters
    Staff Writer

    May 25, 2005

Although obviously disappointed his squad came up just short of reaching the 1A South Region final for the second consecutive year, Poolesville baseball coach Will Gant couldn't be more pleased with his program's progress.

After winning a combined six games in his first two seasons, the Falcons finished the 2005 campaign with a 7-13 record that included a big win over Northwest (12-7) and a near upset of top-seeded Brunswick during last Wednesday's regional semifinal contest.
"I'm pleased with what we did," said Gant, whose squad compiled records of 2-12 and 4-15 in the his first two seasons. "We've got a good nucleus coming back and we've got some good, young guys coming up from the JV."

In the team's 8-7, eight-inning loss to Brunswick, Poolesville jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning with Kevin White (.379 batting average, 22 RBI this season) singling in Robert Tedeschi, who walked and stole second to get into scoring position.
The Railroaders, however, rallied for five runs in the second inning on a couple of errors and numerous hits for a 5-1 lead. Not to be outdone, the Falcons chipped away at the deficit, scoring two runs in the third, one in the fourth and two in the fifth to eventually forge a 6-5 lead.

White smacked a double to score Chris Kramek (.457, 12 RBI, 29 stolen bases) and White later scored on a groundout by Sean Foy to cut the lead to 5-3 in the third.

In the fourth inning, Tedeschi singled in a run and in the fifth, White doubled and later scored on a single by Bobby Dolan (.286, 16 RBI) to tie the score at 5-5. Consecutive singles by Matt Williquette and Kevin Campbell (.314, 13 runs) brought Dolan home to give Poolesville the 6-5 lead.

Brunswick forged a 6-6 tie in the bottom of the fifth on a walk, a stolen base and an error in the outfield. Poolesville came right back in the top of the sixth for a 7-6 lead on a double by Roger Torres (.333, 14 RBI) that scored Kramek from second base.

The Railroaders knotted the score again in the bottom of the sixth on a walk, an error and a single to center field and then won the game in the eighth inning on two hard hit balls. A diving Dolan stopped the first one but his throw to first was off line, allowing the runner to reach second base. White then knocked down the other shot but he was unable to control it before the runner reached home.
The Falcons produced 14 hits for the game, led by Kramek (3 for 5, 3 stolen bases), Torres (2 for 5, 2 RBI), White (2 for 4, RBI) and Campbell (3 for 4).

"Down 5-1 to Brunswick, it would have been real easy to have lost that game big," Gant said. "I was real happy with what my guys did."

On the mound, ace pitcher Ryan Lawrence (5-2, 2.00 ERA, 46 strikeouts) pitched well in relief, working out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth inning and with the score tied 6-6 in the fifth, he stranded a runner on third by getting Brunswick's top hitter, Aaron Main, to groundout back to the mound.

Lawrence earned the victory in the team's 19-3 thumping of W.E.B. DuBois in the quarterfinals.

Falcons Lose a Thriller to Brunswick in the 8th 8-7
    May 18, 2005  --

Poolesville showed tremendous grit and determination in coming back from a 5-1 deficit in the 2nd inning only to lose in the bottom of the 8th inning to South Region top-seed Brunswick 8-7. Matt Williquette started and pitched well, but two outfield errors in the second permitted the Railroaders to follow-up these missteps with a hitting barrage that led to a five run inning (2 unearned). Ryan Lawrence entered in the 3rd inning and kept Poolesville in the game as the Falcons crept back into the game scoring 2 runs in the 3rd, 1 in the 4th and 2 in the 5th to take the lead 6-5. He pitched 3 strong innings giving up only 2 hits and striking out 2.

Lawrence pitched out of a one out bases loaded jam in the 4th inning by getting the next two batters with a strikeout and a ground out to second. In the 5th inning with a runner on third, the score tied 6-6 and 2 out, he got Brunswick's leading hitter A. Main (.455 BA) to hit a weak grounder to the right side of the mound. Lawrence fielded it cleanly and threw to first for the final out of the inning.

In the 1st inning, Poolesville scored its first run of the game when Robert Tedeschi walked and stole second. Clean-up hitter Kevin White doubled to left center field to score Tedeschi. In the 3rd inning, Chris Kramek singled, stole second and third, then White doubled to score Kramek. White scored on Sean Foy's ground out to the shortstop.

In the 4th inning, Matt Williquette led off with a walk, and Kevin Campbell singled to right moving Williquette to second. Lawrence put down a text-book sacrifice bunt to move the runners up to second and third with one out. Tedeschi singled in one run, but Kramek popped out to second, and Roger Torres flied out to left leaving Campbell stranded at third.

In the 5th inning, White led off with a double to right center field, and Foy's sacrifice bunt moved White to third. Bobby Dolan singled to score White, and singles by Williquette and Campbell scored Dolan with the go-ahead run for a 6-5 lead. Brunswick tied the game at 6 in the bottom of the 5th with a walk, a stolen base, and an error in the outfield.

In the 6th inning, Kramek led off with a single, moved to second on a passed ball, and scored on Torres' double to right center field to put PHS up 7-6. In the bottom of the 6th, a walk, an error and a single to center field scored a run for the Railroaders to tie the game 7-7. Sophomore, Mark Saxman came on to get the final two outs with runners on second and third by getting the key second out on a strkeout, and forcing the next batter to ground out to end the Railroaders' rally.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the 8th, when Dolan made an outstanding diving stop of a hard smash to his left, rose to his feet and his throw was just wide of first baseman Foy allowing the runner to advance to second with no outs. With one out, a hard hit ball to a diving White's left was knocked down, but it squirted away from his grasp allowing the runner to score the winning run.

PHS pounded out 14 hits and their hitting attack was led by Chris Kramek, 3 for 5 with 3 stolen bases, Roger Torres went 2 for 5 with 2 RBI, Kevin White went 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and an RBI, and Kevin Campbell went 3 for 4.

    Poolesville Reaches Semifinals

    by James Peters
    Staff Writer

    May 18, 2005

Using another stellar performance by ace pitcher Ryan Lawrence and the hitting of John Miller and Sean Foy, the Poolesville baseball team won its third playoff game in the past two years with a 19-1 five-inning thrashing of Baltimore's W.E.B. DuBois in a Class 1A South Region quarterfinal contest Monday.

Lawrence allowed one unearned run in his three innings of work, while Miller and Foy combined for seven hits and four runs batted in for the Falcons, who improved to 7-12 with the win.
They fell behind, 1-0, to start the game but scored 19 unanswered runs to end the game early.

"We're not a powerhouse or anything, but they were definitely overmatched," said Poolesville coach Will Gant, whose team received a first-round bye Friday. Poolesville will now play top-seeded Brunswick (12-9) Wednesday in a semifinal contest. Brunswick, a longtime nemesis, pounded Baltimore's Digital Harbor, 11-0, Monday.
The Railroaders are paced by top hitters Aaron Main, Pat Curry and Josh Via. Main was batting .455 with three home runs and 17 RBI before the start of the playoffs. Curry had produced two home runs and 10 RBI, and Via was batting .375. The team's top two pitchers are Justen Smith and Main. They had combined for nine of the team's wins.

"They're the No. 1 seed and they're the best team in the region, but they're beatable," Gant said. "We have a good chance to beat them. We can play with anybody if we play our game."

Gant believes Brunswick is similar to Northwest (12-6), a team the Falcons defeated, 8-3, earlier this season. He also believes the team's rugged schedule, which included games against 4A West Region semifinalists Quince Orchard (15-2), Gaithersburg (17-2) and Wootton (17-2) have helped prepare his squad for anyone it will face in the playoffs.

Poolesville reached the regional final last year before falling to Catoctin, 10-2.

    Falcons Have Work Cut Out

    by James Peters
    Staff Writer

    May 11, 2005

After struggling to just two wins during regular-season play last year, the Poolesville baseball team doubled its win total with back-to-back victories in the Class 1A South Region playoffs. The team's run was eventually ended by Frederick County's Catoctin in the regional final. To have similar or better results this season, coach Will Gant believes his Falcons (6-11) will have to battle their way through a trio of tough Frederick County squads, Brunswick, Catoctin and Tuscarora.

"We have played well this year," said Gant. "I feel that we are capable of beating just about anyone. If we play as well as we are capable, we will be able to make a run in the playoffs. We must play our best game to beat Brunswick, Catoctin, and Tuscarora if and when we get to them. The region will go through Frederick County."

Through last weekend, Brunswick had a 10-8 record and was led by Aaron Main (.455 batting average) offensively. Catoctin was sporting a 9-9 record with its top hitter, Danny Duranko checking in with a .514 batting average. Tuscarora finished last weekend with a 7-10 record. The rest of the 1A South Region consists of the traditionally weak Baltimore City contingent of Digital Harbor, W.E.B. DuBois, Dunbar, Forest Park, Reginald Lewis and Southside and Howard County's Oakland Mills.

Heading into Saturday's 5-3 loss to Walter Johnson, the Falcons' top offensive performers were senior center fielder Chris Kramek (.480, 18 runs, 4 doubles, 21 stolen bases), senior shortstop Kevin White (.415, 19 RBI, 6 doubles), junior first baseman Sean Foy (.311, 10 RBI, 6 doubles), junior outfielder Roger Torres (.361, 9 RBI) and junior third baseman Bobby Dolan (.310, 13 RBI). On the mound, senior Ryan Lawrence had compiled a 4-1 record and a 2.83 earned-run average with 34 strikeouts in 29 2/3 innings. White had picked up a save and a win in 15 innings.

Gant was hoping to earn the fourth seed in the region with a win over Walter Johnson or Sherwood perhaps securing that coveted spot. Unfortunately, the Falcons dropped both, including an 8-2 setback to Sherwood (10-6) Monday. The playoff draw was held Tuesday night.

In the inning with one out and two men on, Robert Tedeschi laced a single to center scoring Kevin Campbell. The next batter, Chris Kramek, singled to score another run, then with the bases loaded and two out Sean Foy singled to score Poolesville's final run. Matt Williquette grounded out to end the inning.

Rober Tedeschi pitched well in relief, going 3 innings and allowing 4 hits and no runs. Roger Torres went 2 for 4 and Sean Foy went 1 for 2 and an RBI.

Poolesville Beats Einstein 14-3 By Pounding Out 17 Hits
    May 4, 2005  --

Poolesville pounded out 17 hits including 7 doubles and one triple to beat Einstein 14-3. Ryan Lawrence won his 4th game of the year giving up a run in the 1st and 2 in the second on 7 hits, and then permitted only 2 more hits holding the Titans scoreless over the next 2 innings. His pitching line included no walks, 5 strikeouts, and 3 runs allowed (2 earned).

The Falcons scored 3 runs in the first two innings and then broke the game open in the third inning with 4 runs. Kevin White led off with a single, Sean Foy doubled sending him to third, and Bobby Dolan was hit-by-a-pitch loading the bases. With Ryan Lawrence at the plate and a 2-2 count he ripped a line-drive to the right centerfield fence for 3 run triple. Josh Weaver singled in pinch runner Mike Caro with the final run of the inning. They never surrendered the lead after the 4th inning as they went on to score 7 more runs.

Weaver again played well behind the plate throwing out two Einstein runners trying to steal third base. In addition, he led the Poolesville hitting attack going 3 for 5, with a double and 2 RBI. Lawrence went 1 for 3 with 3 RBI, Dolan went 2 for 4 and had 3 RBI, Roger Torres went 2 for 4 with a double and 3 runs scored, and White went 3 for 5 with 2 doubles, 2 runs scored and 3 RBI.

Falcons Lose to 7th Ranked QO 11-1
    May 3, 2005  --

7th ranked Quince Orchard scored 3 runs in the 1st inning and went on to beat Poolesville 11-1. Chris Kramek went 1 for 3 with 2 stolen bases, and Kevin White went 1 for 3 and had the lone Falcons RBI of the game.

After giving up 4 unearned runs in the first, pitcher Matt Williquette pitched well allowing only 3 runs (2 earned)and 7 hits (4 innings)to the 9th ranked Wooton team.

Poolesville Beats Division Leading Northwest 8-3
    April 28, 2005  --

Poolesville beat 3A power (10th ranked in Examiner) and 3A/2A/1A division winner Northwest 8-3. They followed up the game against Kennedy by pounding out 9 hits including 5 doubles. The Falcons have now won three straight regular season games for the first time in years. Poolesville has started to put all the phases of the game together on a consistent basis. The keys to success for the Falcons are improved pitching production from Kevin White, Matt Williquette, and Robert Tedeschi, in addition to the steady efforts of Ryan Lawrence, (Team Leading 3 Wins), almost flawless fielding, and timely hitting. Clearly, the emphasis Coach Gant has put on batting and fielding practice, and the efforts of assistant coach/hitting coach Matt Derrick have begun to payoff for Poolesville.

Robert Tedeschi, after some tough outings earlier in the season, pitched extremely well against a strong hitting Northwest team with two all-state players. He allowed only 1 earned run and 3 hits in 4 innings. Kevin White came on in the 5th and finished the game with 3 innings of solid work. He allowed 2 earned runs and 3 hits.

Poolesville's leading hitters inlcuded Chris Kramek who went 2 for 4 with 2 RBI, Kevin White 2 for 3 including a double, 2 runs scored and 2 RBI, and Sean Foy 1 for 2 including a double and 2 RBI. The Falcons also completed two double plays to keep Northwest in check. One of the double plays ended a Northwest rally in the 6th inning when Shortstop, Robert Tedeschi, ranged far to his left to field a hard grounder, stepped on second and fired the ball to first to double-up the speedy Northwest lead-off batter.

    Falcons Down Kennedy 22-3
    April 27, 2005  --

The Falcons broke out the bats against Kennedy winning 22-3 in 5 innings. Poolesville had 18 hits including 5 extra base hits, and jumped off to an early lead scoring 8 runs in the 1st inning. In the 1st inning, Robert Tedeschi and Chris Kramek both singled and Roger Torres blistered a double to right centerfield for 2 RBI. After a walk and a stolen base by Torres, Sean Foy slapped a single to centerfield for 2 RBI. A single by Bobby Dolan and a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Ryan Lawrence scored 2 more runs. Kramek and John Miller both singled scoring the final two runs of the inning.

In the second inning, two walks and single by Dolan scored 1 run, then Lawrence doubled to the gap in leftfield scoring another run. Kramek doubled in two more runs and Torres ended the scoring by singling in Kramek. In the third inning after two walks, Lawrence hit a long shot to left centerfield for a homerun and 3 RBI. Tedeschi and Kramek singled, then Sean Foy laced a double to left scoring both runners.

Catcher Josh Weaver called a great game as pitcher Ryan Lawrence struck out 10 Kennedy batters. Lawrence gave up 2 earned runs and scattered 4 hits in 5 innings for the win. The top of the order was outstanding as Robert Tedeschi went 3 for 5 scoring 3 runs, Chris Kramek went 4 for 5 scoring 4 runs, with 3 RBI, and 3 stolen bases, and Roger Torres went 2 for 3, with 4 RBI and 3 stolen bases. Lawrence went 2 for 3 and led the Falcons with 5 RBI, and Foy and Torres contributed 4 RBI to the win.

Falcons Come Back After Being Down 4-0 to Beat B-CC 6-4
    April 19, 2005  --

Poolesville was down 4-0 after 3 innings, when a change in B-CC's pitcher in the 5th inning brought the Falcons bats alive, which led to a thrilling come from behind victory, 6-4. In the 6th inning, with the bases loaded and no outs, Weaver was hit-by-a-pitch scoring a run, then John Miller hit a single to knock in another run to tie the game. Robert Tedeschi hit a sharp grounder to the pitcher that began a home to first double play leaving runners on second and third with two outs. Chris Kramek with a 1-2 count hit a sharp single to left over the third baseman's head scoring the go-ahead runs.

Ryan Lawrence matched B-CC's ace for 2 innings, but B-CC's bats came alive in the 3rd inning scoring 4 runs. Kevin White came on in the 4th inning and pitched extremely well. He showed great command and his location kept the B-CC batters off balance. White pitched 4 shutout innings, giving up only 3 hits to keep the Falcons in the game.

Chris Kramek went 3 for 4 with 2 RBI and 3 stolen bases, and both Sean Foy and Kevin Campbell made excellent fielding plays to help keep the Barons from expanding their lead. Sean Foy made a diving catch of a hard low line drive to his left to stop a B-CC rally in the 3rd inning, and Kevin Campbell got a great jump and made a running one hand catch on a ball hit to the gap in right centerfield in the 5th inning.

    Falcons Edged by Rockville 6-5
    April 16, 2004  --

Rockville jumped out to the the early 3-0 lead, but the Falcons fought back with 4 runs in the 3rd, however, Rockville prevailed 6-5. In the 3rd inning, John Miller led off with a single, a single by Chris Kramek, and Kevin Campbell was hit-by-a-pitch to load the bases. Then Kevin White singled to left scoring two runs and Bobby Dolan had a swinging sacrifice bunt to score another run. Roger Torres finished the scoring with a single to left to drive in White. In the 5th inning, Chris Kramek led off with a single and stole second base. He moved to third on Kevin Campbell's long fly to right, and scored on Kevin White's gounder to the shortstop.

In another solid pitching performance, Matt Williquette pitched the final 3 innings giving up no runs and scattering 3 hits. Sophomore, Tommy Hughes, a recent call-up from the JV, pitched two innings when Robert Tedeschi was unable to continue after being hit-by-a-pitch. Tommy did a fine job in his first Varsity pitching experience.

Chris Kramek led the Falcons going 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored. Kevin White had 1 hit in 3 trips, scored a run and had 3 RBI. Roger Torres contributed 2 hits in 3 trips with 1 RBI.

The Falcons took a 2-0 lead into the 4th inning against top rated 4A Paint Branch behind the outstanding pitching of Matt Williquette. Two big innings by Wheaton led to the Falcons defeat as the Knights scored 4 in the 4th and 3 in the 6th. The Falcons rally started when Chris Kramek led off the 7th with a walk, a Wheaton error and Bobby Dolan hit-by-a-pitch loaded the bases. Roger Torres singled to left to score a run, and Matt Williquette was hit-by-a-pitch to score another run. With one out, Kevin White hit a double to right centerfield scoring two more runs. With two out, Robert Tedeschi had a 3-2 count and fouled off 3 pitches leading to a walk that loaded the bases, again. Chris Kramek hit a pop-up to the shortstop to end the game.

Chris Kramek led the Falcons offense going 2 for 4 with a double and 2 stolen bases. Kevin White went 2 for 2 with a double and 2 RBI. Torres and Dolan both went 1 for 3 with a RBI.

Ryan Lawrence looked to be in command in the first three innings giving up only one hit and striking out 5, but the Knights exploded in the fourth with 3 hits and 4 runs (3 earned). Roger Torres got the last out of the fourth and pitched well in the 5th, when the Knights again exploded with 3 runs on 3 hits. Matt Ray kept the Knights in check in the 7th inning by striking out the last two batters after surrendering two walks.

SV Continues the Falcons Road Woes Winning 15-5
    April 7, 2005  --

The Falcons started fast scoring 3 runs in the first inning, but Seneca Valley rallied for a 15-5 victory. Even though the Falcons had their best hitting output of the season with 10 hits, SV trumped that with 17 hits of their own. The Falcons were led by Senior, Chris Kramek who had 3 hits in 4 trips, scored 2 runs and stole 3 bases. Kramek made a spectacular running catch in center field to help end a SV rally in the second inning. Bobby Dolan also made a significant contribution for the Falcons with 2 hits in 3 at bats and 3 RBI. Also, Roger Torres and Sean Foy contributed two hits each.

Falcons Beat Rockville 3-0 Behind Ryan Lawrence's 3 Hit Shutout
    April 5, 2005  --

In his second straight impressive performance, Senior, Ryan Lawrence pitched a 3 hit shutout at the Rams, leading the Falcons to a 3-0 win. His pitching line included 5 strikeouts and 2 walks, and only one Rockville batter had a hit to the outfield. Rockville's only threat of the game came in the fourth inning. The first batter singled to right, and the second batter walked. With runners on first and second and nobody out, Lawrence pitched out of the jam by inducing two ground outs and strikeout to end the inning.

Again, the PHS infield played a flawless game. Second baseman, Robert Tedeschi played an outstanding game in the field. He had 3 putouts and 3 assists for the game. Shortstop, Kevin White (5 assists and one putout) showed excellent range, making several difficult plays look effortless. Kevin Campbell led the Falcons offense with 3 hits and 2 RBI. In addition, Sean Foy went 1 for 2 with another key double, and Chris Kramek went 1 for 3 with 2 stolen bases and a run scored.

PHS was led by Senior, Kevin White with 2 hits including a double and 3 RBI. Sean Foy went 2 for 2 and had 2 RBI in the loss. Matt Ray and Kevin Campbell each had a key hit in the Falcons fifth inning rally. Also, Matt Ray pitched well in 2 and 2/3 innings of relief.

Falcons Win 2-1 over RM with Great Fielding and Outstanding Pitching
March 21, 2005 - 05:30 PM --   The Falcons opened the season with an impressive team peformance by defeating Richard Montgomery 2-1. The infield play by Bobby Dolan, Kevin White, Robert Tedeschi, and Sean Foy was simply outstanding. Both Bobby Dolan and Kevin White showed excellent range, and made critical fielding plays in the later innings to preserve the victory. Senior Pitcher, Ryan Lawrence provided a masterful pitching performance. He pitched a complete game scattering four hits and striking out five for the win. His location was excellent as he forced RM hitters into 16 ground ball outs, while giving up two bloop singles and one extra base hit. Junior, Josh Weaver performed well behind the plate in his first varsity game.

Richard Montgomery scored first in the second inning on a walk, a stolen base and a bloop single to right scoring the runner from second. The Falcons got a run in the fourth after a walk to Matt Williquette, a stolen base and a clutch double by Sean Foy. In the fifth inning, Chris Kramek doubled and scored on Kevin White's single to right.

With one out in the top half of the fifth, RM got a double to right. A stolen base and a walk left runners on first and third when Ryan Lawrence fielded a ground ball to the right side of the mound, and without hesitation threw it to home. Josh Weaver fielded the throw from Lawrence and blocked the plate to prevent the run from scoring and get the second out of the inning. Ryan Lawrence struck out the next RM batter to end the inning and the last RM threat of the game.
