Team Coaches
Team Coaches are entrusted with furthering the hockey skill development of their players, providing a positive and fun learning environment, and establishing a sense of team play and sportsmanship. While the Head Coach may take the lead role and assume many of the responsibilities, all Coaches on an individual team should work together and communicate a shared vision for emphasizing fundamentals, practice orientation, and game strategy and management. Lastly, Team Coaches serve as principal ambassadors of the OYHA program to the greater hockey community.
Responsibilities include:
- Formulating organized practice plans so that ice time is used efficiently and effectively.
- Communicate, and work with, the Team Manager in updating and maintaining the practice, game, and tournament schedule throughout the season.
- Determining an appropriate number of games and tournaments to schedule for the season.
- Being responsive to any questions or concerns raised by team parents.
- Acquiring, and maintaining, the requisite USA Hockey Coaches certification requirement for the age level/team one is coaching.
- Attending coaches meetings and clinics hosted by the Coaching Coordinator(s) prior to and during the season.
- Conducting themselves in a professional manner during practices and games.
- Working with the Team Manager in monitoring, and enforcing, OYHA’s Zero Tolerance policy.
- Devising game plans and line rotations that are competitive in approach yet fair to the players.
- Encouraging parents to help in repetitive drills during practices.
- Accessing and utilizing resources available to them for furthering the skill development of their players (ex: asking the Coaching Coordinator(s), or the Ace Coordinator, to conduct certain drills that would be of use to one’s team.)
