For Falcons, an unhealthy case of northern exposure
For fifth straight year, Poolesville falls to Frederick County in playoffs

    by James Peters
    Staff Writer

For the past five years, the Poolesville High baseball team has had its hopes of reaching the Class 1A state playoffs dashed by a Frederick County squad, including Friday’s 12-2 five-inning loss to host Catoctin in the 1A South Region final.

The team’s other setbacks were 5-4 to Catoctin in the 2002 regional final, 6-0 to Brunswick in the 2003 quarterfinals, 10-2 to Catoctin in the 2004 final and 8-7 in eight innings to Brunswick in the 2005 semifinals.

This year’s Poolesville’s team, which finished with a 9-10, was done in by Catoctin’s steady offensive attack. The Cougars scored at least one run all but one inning, including six runs in the fifth against relievers Brian Steyer (3-3, 4.79 ERA) and Roger Torres (1-3, 2.82).

Poolesville starter Matt Williquette (2-4, 1.88) was reached for six runs, one earned, on seven hits in the first three innings to earn the loss.

Offensively for the Falcons, Sean Foy (.431, 13 RBI) went 2 for 3 with a double, and Tommy Hughes (.340, 3 HRs, 14 RBI) had a double and scored. Nick Loftus (.241, 6 RBI) knocked in one of the team’s two runs.

Other key hitters for this year’s team were Kevin Campbell (.465), Bobby Dolan (.339, 15 RBI), and Robert Tedeschi (.298, 11 RBI).
The Falcons rolled to the regional final thanks to a quarterfinal forfeit from Baltimore City’s Dunbar and a 16-2 thrashing of Digital Harbor, also of Baltimore, in the semifinals.

In the Digital Harbor game, Williquette recorded the win and went 2 for 4 with two RBI. Jon Miller added three hits, three runs and two stolen bases, and Tedeschi (1 for 1) and Foy (3 for 4, triple) knocked in two runs apiece. Dolan went 2 for 4 with two walks.
