Lettering Requirements

Varsity Letter Awards usually passed out at year end banquet
1st year letter winners receive chenille letter and pin (cc with arrow)
2nd year letter winners receive two bar pins to put on their letter
3rd year letter winners receive a plaque
4th year letter winners receive a larger plaque
Anyone who participated in cross country, but did not qualify for a letter will receive a participation certificate.

Hoover Boys Cross Country Lettering Requirements
To earn a varsity letter, one of the following requirements must be met:
- Break the time of 18:00(once) or 18:15(twice)
- Run in the District, Regional, or State Meet
- In addition, an athlete must regularly attend practice, exhibit a positive attitude, and display a strong work ethic.
- The coaching staff reserves the right to award a varsity letter to any athlete in a situation where he has not met the above criteria.

Hoover Girls Cross Country Lettering Requirements
To earn a varsity letter, one of the following requirements must be met:
- Break the time of 22:00(once) or 22:30(twice)
- Run in the District, Regional, or State Meet
- In addition, an athlete must regularly attend practice, exhibit a positive attitude, and display a strong work ethic.
- The coaching staff reserves the right to award a varsity letter to any athlete in a situation where he has not met the above criteria.

State badges for the sleve of a letterman jacket can be ordered for all athletes that makes it to the State meet.

Other Honors

Runner of the Week/Year - Each week throughout the season the Canton Repository highlights a male and female runner from each of the three divisions in their "Runner of the Week" section. The runners photo, previous week results, and career highlights will appear. The runners are selected each week by the Stark County Cross Country Coaches Association, based on their performance for that week. They will select the runner with the highest place finish in a race for that week, regardless of time. In the case of a tie in place, then time will be used to determine winner. A runner will not usually receive this award more than once per season.

All Federal League Teams - Primarily based on an athletes finish at the Federal League Meet, but also includes coaches vote. Top 9 finishers in the Federal League Meet will make 1st team. 10-18th place finishers will make 2nd team. 19-27th place finishers will make honorable mention. A male and female runner of the year will also be selected, by the coaches, as "Runner of the Year". The Repository will list these teams, but no photos are taken. Athletes making first team will receive a plague, 2nd team and honorable mention will receive certificates.

All County Teams - Determined by performance of athletes at the Stark County meet and voted upon by coaches with in the Stark County Coaches Association. The top ten finishers at the Stark County Meet will make it onto the 1st team will be invited to a banquet usually held in early December. Male and female "Runners of the Year" will be selected for Division I, II, and III, and announced at the banquet. This selection is based, soley, on who ends the season with the fastest times in each division. Photos will be taken by the Repository at the banquet. "Runner of the Year" recipients will receive a plaque. 1st team recipients will receive a certificate.

All County Academic - Certficates are given to athletes that make All County 1st Team, 2nd Team, or Honorable Mention or qualify for the Regional Meet (as individual or team ) and have an unweighted GPA of 3.5 or higher.

The Stark County Cross Country Coaches Association Scholarships - Several top students athletes are selected to receive $500 need based scholarships. Athletes receiving these scholarships are also invited to the All County 1st Team Banquet where they will be presented with their scholarship. Click here for the scholarship application.

Stark-Summit All-Star Senior Race - Usually held at Walsh College, the week following the State Meet. Top senior runners in both counties are selected by the Stark County Cross Country Coaches Association to run in this race.

Academic All-Ohio Award - If an athlete qualifies for the State meet and has an unweighted GPA of 3.5 or higher, they will receive and Academic All-Ohio Award. Freshman are not eligible. The coaches will turn in a list of eligible athletes to the Ohio Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches at the State Meet.

All Ohio - Athletes placing in the top 25 at the State Meet

State Meet Podium and Awards - Top 15 finishers at the State Meet

Dave Clegg Scholarship - No application is needed for this scholarship.  The Dave Clegg scholarship is given in memory of Hoover's beloved cross country and track coach, Dave Clegg, and is awarded to one boy and one girl ($500 each?). It is open to athletes in both track and cross country.  To be considered for this scholarship, athletes must letter 3 times in one sport (track or cross) (3 total letters) or two times in two sports (track and cross) (4 total letters). The committee to pick the athletes is made up of the head coach for each respective sport (cross and track) along with the Athletic Director.  The selection will be made each spring.
