Wayne Wins Two On Way to Playoffs

WAYNE LEGION WINS TWO
Wayne – Wayne sent ten batters to the plate in the sixth inning and scored five times to defeat Haverford 6-1 to conclude the regular season of the Main Line American Legion Baseball League.
Tom Caramanaco scored the first run of the game for Haverford in the third when he walked and came around after a single by Chip Scherer. Wayne answered with a run of its own in the third when Brooks Bentz (Radnor) and Jim McConlogue (Lehigh) singled and Devin Gage (Alvernia) knocked Bentz home with a single to tie the game.
Wayne was unable to get the timely hit and take the lead against Haverford’s Tim Gibson. Wayne left runners eight stranded in scoring position in the first, second, third, and fifth innings, before finally getting to Gibson in the sixth. Wayne’s Ryan Kraus (Radnor) held Haverford’s offense intact all night with a complete game seven strikeout performance.
Sam Frey (Virginia Tech) and Jon Hammer (Harriton) walked in the sixth and then Wayne got three consecutive RBI base hits from Jeremy Rogoff (Washington Univ.), Bentz, and McConlogue. Gage cleared the bases with a long triple to give Wayne the 6-1 victory.
Wayne defeated Springfield last week 3-1 at Odorisio Park. Wayne took the early lead in the first when Bentz led off with a single to right, was sacrificed to second by Nate Demmy (Harriton) and then scored when McConlogue scorched a double to left-center. After McConlogue stole third, he scored on a groundout by Eli Branzburg (Muhelenberg).
Wayne added its third run in the second when Sean Grimes (Radnor) walked, Frey walked, Matt Cohn (Harriton) beat out a bunt single, and Bentz rapped a sacrifice fly to center field.
Wayne ended the season at 12-4 and in second place in the Main Line American Legion League and 15-7 overall. On Wednesday, Wayne will host Clifton at Radnor High School in first round action of the double elimination playoffs.
The Wolverines, Wayne’s entry in the Main Line Junior Legion, advanced to the finals of the playoffs before losing to Roxborough 8-5 on Sunday. The Wolverines finished the season at 17-6-1 in the league and 23-8-1 overall.
Coach Bryan Bendowski (Shipley) has to be happy with the talent that will be moving up to Seniors next year. The Wolverines had a team batting average of .355 and included sevent players who hit over .400. Third baseman Sean Murphy (St. Joe’s Prep) led the team with a .483 average and had 29 RBI. Shortstop Kyle Kopp (Radnor) hit .441 with 13 doubles and 32 RBI. Kopp was 5-0 with one save, a microscopic 1.83 E.R.A. The hard throwing right-hander struckout 53 in 46 innings pitched. Outfielder Marcus von Hertsenberg (Radnor) hit .420 and led the team in stolen bases with 21 and runs scored with 36. The southpaw was also impressive on the mound going 7-0 with three saves. Catcher Brandon Miller (Marple-Newtown) hit .406 on the season and threw out nearly 40% of the stolen base attempts.
Wayne also has an impressive group returning to the Wolverines next season. Designated Hitter Rob Collins (Radnor) hit .417 and led the team in on-base percentage at .538. Outfielder Vinnie Caniglia hit .407 and stole 15 bases. Second baseman Taylor Wright hit .402 and had 16 RBI. First baseman Anthony Knight hit .341 and knocked in 22 runs. Knight also was 2-0 with a 2.63 E.R.A.

Laying the Wood on Narberth

RUNDOWN -- Wayne's Jeremy Rogoff gets caught in a rundown versus Springfield.
Wayne – Alex Wood hadn’t been on the mound all year for the Wayne Senior Legion team. So, when coach Bryan Bendowski handed him the ball against hard-hitting Narberth, Wood must have been surprised.
Wood gave a tired Wayne pitching staff a big lift by pitching four strong innings in leading third place Wayne to a 7-3 victory over second place Narberth in Main Line American Legion action.
Wayne scored first in the second inning on a single and stolen base by the red hot Harrison Keiser followed by a Narberth infield error. Jeremy Rogoff led off the third with a single up the middle, Brooks Bentz sacrificed Rogoff to second, Nate Demmy walked and both runners advanced on a passed ball. Jim McConlogue then singled into left field to give Wayne a 3-0 lead.
Keiser singled in the fourth and the equally hot Sam Frey followed up with a single of his own. Rogoff reached on the second error by the Narberth infield and Bentz ripped a long fly ball to center field for a sacrifice fly and a 5-0 Wayne advantage.
In the fifth, Narberth finally put metal to Wood. Justin Cerone and Brett Brenner singled. After a wild pitch, Cerone scored on Billy Goldman’s groundout and Brenner scored on Mike Jaffe’s sacrifice fly. Boston College-bound Mike Galetta then sent Wood to the showers with a homerun to right field.
With the score narrowed to 5-3, McConlogue led off the Wayne fifth with a walk, Wli Branzburg singled past third base, Keiser rapped his third single of the day to right, and Frey scored McConlogue with a single. Rogoff walked to score Branzburg and give Wayne insurance runs that it would not need as McConlogue finished off the game for his first save of the season.
On Friday, McConlogue and Matt Cohn combined on a no-hitter. Wayne scored early and scored often in an 11-0 thrashing of Clifton. Frey had three hits, including a triple. McConlogue smacked four hits including three doubles. Rogoff hit his first homerun of the season and Bentz and Branzburg added extra base hits.
Monday, Wayne seemed to go away on its 4th of July vacation early as it dropped a 14-2 decision to visiting Springfield. Bentz scored two runs and McConlogue had both of Wayne’s RBI.

Wayne Downs Heat at Dusk

Haverford – With darkness falling at Haverford High School, Wayne Legion rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh inning to defeat the Haverford Heat 7-6 on Monday.
With one out in the seventh, Brooks Bentz (Radnor) started the rally with a single up the middle. After a walk to Nate Demmy (Harriton), Jim McConlogue (Lehigh) cracked a double to left center. Bentz, who had to wait up at second to see if the ball was caught, did a nifty slide around catcher Ed Rooney to score. With the tieing run at second, Lou Baldini (Lasalle) knocked a curve ball into left field to score the tieing runs. After the second out, Jon Hammer (Harriton) walked on a 3-2 pitch. Sam Malcolm (Gettysburg) then singled to left field and coach Bryan Bendowski (Shipley) held up Baldini at third. On the fourth consecutive 3-2 count, Harry Keiser walked to give Wayne the go ahead run.
But, the game was far from over. With the Wayne bullpen decimated from playing four games in a weekend tournament, Bendowski sent Sam Frey (Shipley) out to finish the game despite Frey having already tossed 113 pitches on the night. Frey faced the dangerous Tim Russum to start off the seventh and Russum, who had already had a walk, triple, and double, smacked a base hit to right field. On the first pitch, Russum stole second then advanced to third when Frey balked. With none out, Ed Rooney hit a popup to shallow centerfield that was too deep for the drawn in Wayne infield, but Jeremy Rogoff (Washington University) made a running and diving catch to snare the looper. The gutsy Frey then reached deep down to retire the next two batters on strikeouts to end the threat and the game. Frey ended the game with nine strikeouts.
Wayne scored first in the third inning when Keiser and Bentz walked, and then Demmy, McConlogue, and Baldini singled to take a 2-0 lead. Haverford came back with three each in the third and fourth innings with the big blows coming from Russum’s extra base hits. Demmy, who plated three runs on the evening for Wayne, scored a lone run in the fifth when he reached on a throwing error and scored on McConlogue’s single.
Tom Caramanaco, the Penn Charter grad bound for Franklin & Marshall, deserved a better fate for the Heat. Caramanaco pitched six strong innings and gave up just four hits while fanning ten.

 Kraus Throws One Hitter but Loses

CLEARFIELD - The Clearfield American Legion Post 6 baseball team scrapped its way to a one-run win and a tie in Mid-Atlantic "World Wood Bat Association" Showcase XXV first-round action at the Lawrence Township Rec Park Field Friday.
Manager Sid Lansberry's Chiefs managed only one hit off Wayne Senior Legion's Ryan Kraus but eked out a 2-1 victory in the morning game and then came from behind three times to salvage a 6-6 draw with Ottawa (Ohio) in the evening tilt, which was halted after seven innings because of the tourney's two-hour time limit.
In the fast-paced first game, tourney pick-up Jeremy Grove had a rocky start but bounced back to win a pitching duel with Kraus, while James Zimmermann drove in both of the Chiefs' runs and also chalked up a save.
Wayne's Jeremy Rogoff drew a one-out walk in the first inning and advanced to third on Jim McConlogue's single to right. Clearfield catcher Wil Bacharach threw out McConlogue on a steal attempt, and that proved to be a key defensive play when Lou Baldini singled through the left side to plate Rogoff and Eli Branzburg followed with a single up the middle. Grove escaped further trouble by getting Ben Wade to ground into a forceout.
Jon Hammer led off the second inning with a ground-rule double to the fence in left center, but that was the last hit surrendered by Grove, who struck out 10 in six innings. The lefthander from Reynoldsville walked six.
Clearfield knotted the score in the third when Derek Danver walked, David Ryan sacrificed and Zimmermann singled inside third base for the only hit off Kraus, who struck out four and walked three.
Two free passes by the righthander led to the deciding run in the fifth. With one out, Kraus opted for the force at third on pinch-hitter Aaron Sayers' comebacker, but his throw was low. Zimmermann followed with a sacrifice fly to right to drive in Parker Herrington.
The Delaware County team almost tied the game in the sixth. Two walks, a passed ball and a wild pitch had runners in scoring position with two outs. Pinch-runner Matt Cohn tried to score when ball four to Harrison Keiser bounced to the backstop, but Bacharach retrieved the ball and flipped to Grove in time for the third out.
Zimmermann's third save of the season didn't come easy. He walked Nate Demmy, turned Brooks Bentz's sacrifice attempt into a force at second and then walked Rogoff. However, McConlogue's liner was right at second baseman Jarrin Campman and resulted in a game-ending double play.
 Keiser on a Roll

Wayne – Harrison Keiser reached on an error, then scored from first on two Norwood throwing errors to lift Wayne to a hard fought 3-2 win at Odorisio Park on Monday night.
With the score tied at two, Keiser (Pittsburgh) led off the bottom of the eighth with a ground ball to third that was booted. Then, with pinch hitter Matt Cohn (Harriton) at the plate, Keiser took off on a steal attempt. The only problem was that Keiser left before the pitch was thrown. Keiser must have had a rabbit foot in his back pocket, because the throw from the Norwood pitcher sailed into center field and Keiser alertly took off for third. The throw from center field went out of play and Keiser was able to catch his breath and walk home with the winning run.
Wayne thought it might have won the game in the bottom of the sixth. Jeremy Rogoff (Trinity) led off with a perfectly executed drag bunt single. Manager Bryan Bendowski gambled and had Brooks Bentz (Radnor) bunt with two strikes and Bentz got the bunt down successfully to move Rogoff to second. Nate Demmy (Harriton) then singled to right field to plate Rogoff and put Wayne up 2-1.
Norwood needed to score in the seventh and it did just that. Ryan Grabias singled off of pitcher Sean Grimes’ (Radnor) glove and Grabias moved to second on a throwing error. With one out, pinch hitter Jaime Cashin lined a single to right field to score Grabias and tie the game 2-2.
Things looked good in the bottom of the seventh when Jim McConlogue (Lehigh), who never gets cheated on an at bat, singled between short and third to lead off the inning. McConlogue moved to second on a wild pitch and went to third on a throwing error by the catcher. With nobody out and a runner on third, Cashin got a ground out to third and then a ground ball to short that resulted in a double play and ended the Wayne threat.
Grimes did a brilliant job on the mound for Wayne. The gutsy Grimes, who threw 114 pitches on the evening, went all eight innings and scattered seven hits while walking two. He also helped himself by starting a double play in the eighth on a Norwood bunt attempt. After allowing two hits and a run in the first inning, Grimes breezed through the next five frames and did not allow a hit.
The last time that Wayne met Norwood on the baseball diamond, Wayne exploded for ten runs in the seventh inning to win in a rout 14-0 at Interboro High School. This win was certainly not as easy as Wayne was out-hit 7-4. The difference, however, was the Wayne defense that committed just one miscue compared to five by the visitors. Wayne is now 5-2 in Main Line American Legion action and 6-3 overall.

 Gage Blast Burns Heat

Wayne – Devin Gage (Shipley) smacked a two run homerun to break a 3-3 tie and lead Wayne to a 5-3 win over Haverford in Main Line American Legion action from Friday night.
With the score tied 3-3 in the home fifth, Jim McConlogue (Haverford School) led off the inning with a sharp single to right field. Gage then belted a fastball to deep left field and circled the bases culminating in a head first slide into the dust of Odorisio Park at home.
Gage, who will play at Alvernia College next year, knocked in Lou Baldini (LaSalle) in the first inning with a single. In the third, Gage’s RBI single plated McConlogue with Wayne’s third run of the game. The burly Gage was 3 for 3 with 4 RBI on the day. Wayne scored its second run in the second when Matt Cohn (Harriton) singled and Brooks Bentz (Radnor) knocked him home with a double to left-center.
McConlogue, who will pitch at Lehigh next year, worked six innings for the victory and also was 3 for 3 at the plate. The veteran right-hander gave up five hits and struck out seven. Sean Grimes (Radnor) relieved McConlogue in the seventh and picked up his first save of the season.

Philadelphia – Tim Weglicki (Archbishop Carroll) cracked a double in the bottom of the seventh to score Kyle Delone and give Ivy Ridge an 8-7 victory over visiting Wayne on Sunday in Roxborough.
Wayne took the early lead in this one off of Ivy Ridge’s Mike Sinnott. After Jeremy Rogoff (Trinity University) walked, Brooks Bentz (Radnor), fresh off the disabled list, singled to right and sent Rogoff to third. After Bentz stole second, Jim McConlogue (Lehigh) drove both Rogoff and Bentz home with a base hit and then took second when right fielder Nick Tinneny misplayed the ball. Eli Branzburg (Muhlenberg) then whacked a single to score McConlogue to give Wayne a 3-0 lead.
Wayne held Ivy Ridge hitless in the first two innings, but the home team took advantage of three walks and a hit batsman and singles by Weglicki, Ryan Weber, and Mike Sinnott and took a 4-3 lead. Wayne brought in Sean Grimes (Radnor) in relief with the bases loaded in the third. The Panther’s John Caputo belted a bases clearing double to deep left field to give Ivy Ridge seven runs in the inning.
Grimes then tossed three scoreless innings to keep Wayne in the game. In the sixth, Wayne rallied. Grimes singled to start the inning and Sam Malcolm (Gettysburg) followed with a base hit. Nate Demmy (Harriton) doubled to score courtesy runner Sam Frey (Virginia Tech). After Jon Hammer (Harriton) and Bentz walked to load the bases, McConlogue delivered again with a single to score two and tie up the exciting contest.
Wayne outhit the Panthers 10-6, but left ten runners on base and that proved to be their undoing. Wayne is now 4-2 on the season and 3-1 in Main Line American Legion action.
Norwood – On Friday night, Wayne belted 16 hits enroute to a 14-0 thrashing of Norwood. Jim McConlogue pitched six innings of scoreless ball and fanned seven.
Wayne broke open a close 4-0 game in the top of the seventh when it scored ten runs for the final margin of victory. Wayne’s first nine batters reached base in the inning and the winners sent 16 hitters to the plate in the inning. Sam Frey had two hits and scored twice in Wayne’s biggest single inning outburst of the season. The inning was highlighted by Lou Baldini’s (LaSalle University) second homerun of the season.
Eli Branzburg had a two-RBI single in the first that plated Jeremy Rogoff and Nate Demmy. McConlogue, who will pitch next season at Division-1 Lehigh, helped himself with a towering homerun in the third—also his second of the season. McConlogue and Branzburg singled in the sixth and McConlogue scored on Sean Grimes’ fielders choice.
Branzburg had a big day going 4 for 4 with 3 RBI. McConlogue and Frey had three hits each.
Springfield – Wayne got off to a rocky start at Springfield last week. On the second pitch of the game, Wayne leadoff hitter Brooks Bentz was hit in the face with a pitch and forced to leave the game. To add insult to injury, Wayne’s pinch runner got picked off to add to the ominous start. And, in the Springfield first inning, the home club scored five times and had upset on its mind.
Wayne would bounce back in the third inning. Harry Keiser (Pittsburgh) singled to start the rally. Matt Sheehan (LaSalle University) followed with a single. Lou Baldini, Jim McConlogue, and Eli Branzburg followed with RBI singles to put Wayne back in the game trailing 5-4.
In the fifth, Sheehan picked up his second single of the evening and Baldini smacked a homerun to put Wayne out in front 6-5. Devin Gage (Alvernia) clouted a mammoth homerun to lead off the sixth. Keiser cracked his second hit of the day and after Sheehan and Nate Demmy walked, McConlogue delivered in the clutch again with a two RBI base hit.
Wayne put the game out of reach in the seventh by capitalizing on two Springfield errors with the big blow coming from Baldini’s double.
Baldini had a big day with four hits and Keiser added three singles. Sam Frey picked up the complete game win for Wayne.

Wayne -- Wayne American Legion pounded out 17 hits in less than five innings on Tuesday night enroute to a 19-1 thumping of Clifton in Main Line Legion action. Lou Baldini (LaSalle University) had three extra base hits and six RBI in the game. Jeremy Rogoff (Trinity University) added three hits and Harry Kaiser (Pitt-Shipley), Jim McConlogue (Lehigh-Haverford School), Devin Gage (Alvernia-Shipley), and Sam Frey (Virginia Tech-Shipley) had two each. Brooks Bentz (Radnor) doubled and Ryan Kraus (Radnor) picked up the win on the mound.

On Friday, Narberth defeated Wayne 12-4 in the league opener for both squads. Mike Galetta was 3-4 and homered in the first. Jeff Calvert belted a triple in the fifth for Narberth. Carson Tom picked up the win in relief. For Wayne, Brooks Bentz opened the game with a double and Lou Baldini cracked a double in the fifth, but Wayne could only muster four hits on the night in the loss.
 McConlogue’s Blast Sinks Concord

Wayne – Jim McConlogue (Lehigh-Haverford School) blasted a two-run homerun to centerfield to lead Wayne to an 8-5 win over Concord in the opening game of the 2007 season for the Wayne Legion baseball squad.
It was McConlogue who plated the first run of the season for Wayne as his single up the middle scored Nate Demmy (Harriton) in the first inning. In the second, Jeremy Rogoff (Trinity College-Shipley) singled to center to score Andrew Rufo (Radnor) and Matt Cohn (Harriton) to give Wayne a 3-0 lead.
McConlogue’s blast in the third scored Lou Baldini (LaSalle-Sun Valley). Then after Rufo singled and Cohn walked, Sam Malcolm (Gettysburg College-Shipley) laced an RBI base hit to give Wayne a 6-1 lead.
Brooks Bentz (Radnor) scored Wayne’s seventh run in the fourth. Bentz walked and scored when Baldini reached on an error. Bentz ended the scoring in the sixth when his RBI single against a drawn in infield plated Rogoff who had belted a triple.
Concord scored three in the fifth off of Wayne starter Sean Grimes (Radnor) to cut the lead to 8-4 and added one in the fifth off of the reliever Bentz to make it 8-5. But, Bentz got a 1-2-3 inning in the seventh to notch the save for his classmate Grimes.
Wayne begins Main Line Legion action on Friday night in its league opener against rival Narberth at Odorisio Park.
Wayne to Participate in Bellefonte Tournament
Wayne Legion has secured a position in the prestigious Bellefonte Baseball Tournament to be played June 22-24. There will also be a Perfect Game showcase on June 21 prior to the start of the tournament. Wayne participated in this tournament two years ago and is excited to be a part of it once again.
