BallTown Bombers win Championship @ Florida Fall Classic

The BallTown Bombers were proudly sponsored by BallTown Athletic Club owned and operated by Doug Kepple. BallTown shares a building with Kepples Carpet @ 110 Cushman Ave, W. Berlin NJ (609)254-9724. Balltown provides (6) spacious batting tunnels, 2 tunnels have pitching machines along with throwing lanes and multiple hitting T’s. BallTown caters to all age groups including men and women’s softball. The BallTown Bombers started their Fall Season by winning two Regional Tournaments; Quakertown and Delco. We won in impressive fashion. Good pitching, good defense and strong timely hitting. The competition we faced in these two tournaments was adequate. The team was confident but a daunting task of some stiff competition awaited in Florida. During our (5) guaranteed games (in Florida), there would be some low points, some doubt and grumbling. Our team was not used to losing. Instead of “having the better horses on the field” as we did in the Regional Tournaments, the BallTown Bombers turned into a team that ultimately grinded out wins with Dick Tate’s speed, solid defense, timely hitting (I didn’t forget about you Angel Rivera) and a strike throwing pitching staff.

Steve Alemi threw (2) complete game wins including the Semifinal Game. Barry Blundin threw two complete games, including (1) quarter final playoff win. John Dipetro had a complete game win and Doug Kepple threw (17) innings including a nine inning Championship Victory. Keep in mind those innings were thrown in a six day period. Also remember, Steve Alemi and Doug Kepple played every inning in the field defensively. True Iron Men.

There were some setbacks though in the Delco Championship game. Marty Nemorofsky (Nemo) was put on the season ending DL with a serious groin and hip flexor injury. The loss of Nemo was significant. He could hit, was versatile in the field, and could pitch, all very well. And most importantly, you could count on Nemo to be prepared to play in Florida. Unexpectedly, two players, Doug Kepple and John DiPietro, stepped up to fill the void left by Marty and committed to playing in the Fall Classic. Both Doug and John played exceptionally well.

Still our roster was light but solid. We had (11) position players and (2) pitcher only’s. Having to potentially play (8) nine inning games in (6) days against top notch teams would be excruciating.

Florida Fall Classic Game #1 November 15th @ 9:30am @ DodgerTown Stadium, Vero Beach FL vs. Long Island, Yankees BallTown Bombers: 5 Long Island Yankees: 7 Barry Blundin was the starting pitcher for the Bombers and deserved a win. The Bombers uncharacteristically made 4 errors and lost a couple of balls in the sun. To Long Island’s credit they managed 8 hits and played well on defense. The Bombers made it interesting scoring 4 in the last two innings, but came up short in the end. The team’s attitude was surly. We picked up our equipment and ventured to DodgerTown Field#6, where Puerto Rico was waiting. It wasn’t a fun walk. Game #2 November 15th @ 1:30am @ DodgerTown Field #1, Vero Beach FL Vs. Puerto Rico BallTown Bombers: 3 Puerto Rico: 2 Steve Alemi throws a gem. 6 Hits, 0 BB’s. Our defense played better (2) errors. After this game it was apparent we needed to play well to win. Our lopsided Regional Tournament victories were distant memories. Notable Offense: Doug Kepple 2 for 4 Neil Hourahan 2 for 4, (1)2b, (2) RBI, run Frank Lojewski 2 for 3

Game #3 November 16th @ 1:30am @ Tradition Field #6, Port St. Lucie, FL Vs. Raleigh Braves BallTown Bombers: 8 Raleigh Braves: 8 Doug Kepple throws 8 innings allowing 4 runs, scattering 13 hits and 1 BB. The Bombers went into the top of the 9th trailing 5-4. They erupted for (4) runs taking a 3 run lead into the bottom of the ninth. Angel Rivera had the tying RBI with a double and Tom Donahue appeared to have the game winning hit. The Raleigh Braves stormed back to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth. John Skarynski came in relief of John Dipetro to strand runners on second and third with one out. John Dipetro swallowed the tie. We were lucky to walk away with a tie. “You gotta be ... kidding me” was murmured amongst alot of the players. With high expectations most of us didn’t know what to think. A few things we knew… beer and a jacuzzi waited at the hotel and we had another game tomorrow Notable Offense: Tom Donahue 2 for 4, 2 runs. (2) RBI Dick Tate 2 for 5, (1) steal Neil Hourahan 2 for 3, HBP, RBI, Run, (1) 2b Steve Alemi 2 for 3, (2) Run Angel Rivera 2 for 3, BB, (2) RBI, (1) run Notable Defense: Don Davis had two put out throws, one to second and one to third. As we know, offense rules (which is BS). Put outs and good defense change the momentum of games. Donnie’s outfield play was exceptional. He not only made the routine play, but made difficult plays look easy. During this game Tom Donahue injured his groin and hip flexor. Tom wouldn’t be the same after this game. He could only jog slowly. His commitment to contribute to the team, after his injury, was a testament to his character. Defensively, Tom would come up big in the Championship game.

Game #4 November 17th @ 1:30am @ DodgerTown #1, Vero Beach FL Vs. South Atlanta Twins BallTown Bombers: 21 South Atlantic Twins: 3 The South Atlantic Twins were 0-3 before this game and knew they would be heading home Friday. The Bomber’s obliged by stomping on them. John Dipetro threw a complete game allowing (3) runs, (3) hits and (3) BB. Game #5 November 18th @ 9:00am @ Roger Dean Marlin #5, Jupiter, FL Vs. Long Island Yankees BallTown Bombers 2 LI Yankees 9 With the playoffs 95% certain without this win, the Bombers still went into this game playing hard for a victory. It wasn’t happening… In the third inning the Yankees scored (2) and never looked back. Again to Long Island’s credit they hit the ball and made the plays in the field. Frank Lojewski got the loss. Thank God Skeets came in and put the fire out again. Getting beaten by Long Island again hurt. But we’ve been in Long Island’s position before, (4) wins and (1) loss. A cherished #1 seed. They knew they were in the playoffs Tuesday. They coasted and rested Wednesday and Thursday. Long Island faced a #4 seed team (that featured Dante Bichette) and lost in the first round of the playoffs 4-1. Coasting into the playoffs feels good but our Florida teams have never had success coasting. I’m sure many Long Island guys are bitching on the flight home that they pissed on us twice and we won it all. We know that feeling too well. Quarter Final Playoff @ Roger Dean Marlins #7 @ 9:30am vs Cleveland Steve’s Sports BallTown Bombers: 7 Cleveland Steve’s Sport’s: 4 Cleveland Steve’s drew a #1 seed. We had the lowest seed @ #4. There were (2) division’s seeded 1-4. Cleveland Steve’s has been a thorn in our team’s side for at least (5) years. Traditionally, they throw a stud pitcher named “Siebert” (righty) against us and we lose 3-2. Cleveland Steve would then go and lose their next game and be on their way home. On this sunny Friday morning, Cleveland Steve’s decided to throw an unknown lefty at us. Chances are they scouted us the day before and figured we sucked (which we did). In the top of the first, Dick Tate led off with a double over 3rd base, Steve Alemi singled (RBI), Don Davis ripped a double (RBI), Neil Hourahan singled (2) RBI, Doug Kepple doubled RBI and Frank Lojewski singled and John Skarzynski singled--- all hits were consecutive. With no outs in the 1st inning, Cleveland Steve’s saw enough and brought in Siebert. He threw (5) pitches and no other runs scored. We had scored 5 in the first. In the 3rd Neil Hourahan doubled (RBI), This would be our last hit of the game. Barry Blundin, a Delco MSBL Ace, would do the rest. He pitched his ass off. Surrendering two in the first, one in the 4th and one in the 9th . There was no quit in Cleveland Steve’s fight. SemiFinal Playoff @ Roger Dean Marlins #5 @ 1:30am Vs Raleigh Braves BallTown Bombers: 13 Raleigh Braves: 4 The BallTown Bombers scored (1) in the 1st, (2) in the 2nd, (3) in the 3rd, (5) in the 4th and (1) in the 9th. The Bombers had a hit parade against (5) Brave pitchers. Although the Braves had more players than the Bombers, the Braves pitchers were throwing on fumes. Steve Alemi on the other hand found his rhythm. He scattered (12) hits while walking only (2). Lem would be the only Bomber Pitcher to win two games in (6) days. American Championship @ Roger Dean Marlins #5@ 9:00am Vs Dupage Angels BallTown Bombers: 3 Dupage Angels: 2 The Dupage Angels beat the Grip Shield Hammerheads in the Semi-Finals 1-0 in (13) innings. Dante Bichette (Played 14 years in the Bigs and made $42 million) pitched for the HammerHeads and absorbed the loss. The Bombers were the away team and failed to score in the 1st. Doug Kepple toed the rubber for the Bombers and was nearly knocked out of the game in the 1st inning. In the first, the Angels leadoff hitter would single, #2 Hitter K, #3 BB. Cleanup hitter would double (scoring 2), # 5 Hitter BB. With (1) out in the first the Bomber pen was ready. Doug Kepple then recorded (2) pop ups to end the inning. The Angels would score no more. In the most important game (pitched) in Doug’s life, Doug would pitch the best game of his life. Doug’s pitching line would be (9) hits & (2) BB & (2) ER Down 2-0 in the 3rd Dick Tate singled and stole second. With (2) outs Steve Alemi would break the ice, hitting a clean single scoring Tate. Down 2-1 in the 6th, Neil Hourahan would reach 1st base on an error, Don Davis running for Hourahan stole second. With (2) outs, Dave Hyatt stroked a single to score Davis. In the 9th with (2) outs Lojewski would reach base by an error, Hyatt would walk, Angel Rivera (MVP) would deliver a clean single to left for the game winner. In the bottom of the 9th, The Angels 1st batter hit a sharp grounder to short, fielded cleanly but thrown high and up the line,b Dave Hyatt would stretch, catch and tag for the first out. Kepple K’d the #2 batter. The #3 Batter stroked a single. The #4 batter stroked a single. With runners on 1st and 3rd (2 outs) The Bombers elected to allow the winning run to take second uncontested. With (2) outs, the tying run at 3rd, the winning run at 2nd, Kepple threw a (2) seam fastball jamming the batter who hit the ball 20 feet over Alemi’s head @ third. From the dugout it looked like a game winning “Dink” hit. Tom Donahue had other ideas though. Without hesitation Donahue raced (with a hip flexor) and caught the ball cleanly in stride. Angel Rivera received a well deserved MVP trophy and the right to engrave “MVP” on his Fall Classic Championship Ring. Angel played flawless defense @ 3rd and was clutch with his bat. Honorable mentions for MVP include Dick Tate and Steve Alemi. Dick Tate played a solid centerfield and was our sparkplug on the bases. He had in excess of 12 steals and created havoc on opposing defenses. His success in bunting for a hit, with pinched corners was awesome. Dick’s selfless attitude and all out effort on every play made him great teammate. Steve Alemi won (2) big games for us; Game #2 vs. a good Puerto Rico team and The Raleigh Braves in the Semi-Final Game. He consistently “set the table” and “knocked in some big RBI’s. Steve also played exceptional defense @ Short, 2nd and 3rd.

A special note to Dave Kasen. Dave assisted in many decisions and coached well at 3rd base throughout the tournament. His calm demeanor boded well in a dugout where players could become erratic.

All players should consider playing in the Fall Classic (Florida) or World Series (Phoenix). The competition varies and can be enjoyed at all levels.

Indians Defeat Redsox, 12-5, in Game 2 of South Jersey MSBL Cooperstown Series

25+ Phillies/Athletics Next Up on HoF Induction Weekend July 25 

June 27 - This past weekend, the 25+ Pennsauken Indians and Burlington County Red Sox made a four-hour trek up to Cooperstown, NY to play at baseball’s most treasured field - Doubleday Field at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Game 2 of the SJMSBL Cooperstown Series.  After battling the weather gods,  the Tribe pounded out 15 hits en route to a 12-5 victory over the BuSox.       Both teams arrived with every bit of a child’s Christmas morning excitement to play on the field, established in 1839, only to be delayed by the local Cooperstown Hawkeyes currently waiting to finish their game after an hour rain delay.

In order to maximize sunlight and play as much ball as possible the teams posed for pictures, exchanged lineups and took batting practice at nearby batting cages while waiting.   The pre-game experience wasn’t all that bad since a small child walked up to the Indians with a hat in one hand, a pen in another and asked “could you sign my hat”? The Indians and Redsox happily complied as they got to feel like a pro-ball player giving their first autograph.   Once the game started Pennsauken struck first with a 6-0 lead in the first and further stressed the Red Sox defense with bases loaded and no outs in the top of the second.   The Sox were able to capitalize by scoring 4 out of the 5 runners put on base due to Indian errors. The Tribe’s defense was able to freeze eight RedSox left in scoring position to bring home the 12-5 win and extend their winning streak to four.   The SJMSBL Cooperstown Series concludes with Game 3 on Hall of Fame Induction Day, Sunday, July 25th,  as the 25+ Runnemede Phillies and Marlton Athletics take over Doubleday Field in a 9:00am start.

Founder of S.J. senior baseball league going strong after 20 years

He wears No. 6 in honor of his favorite player — Stan Musial.

His team, naturally, is the Cardinals.

Bill Curzie has a passion for baseball. He grew up playing on the streets of Riverside as a young kid, riding his bike to the Riverside AA field in the mid-1940s on warm summer days to play the game he loved.

“I was a sandlot kid,” he recalled. “I’d go back every day. It didn’t matter how hot it was. We just played ball.”

Now 77 and a Delran resident, Curzie’s passion for the game hasn’t lessened. In fact, he remains an active participant and someone others thank for keeping their dreams of playing America’s pastime alive and well.

It was 20 years ago that Curzie founded the South Jersey Men’s Senior Baseball League. There were six teams that inaugural season, a ceremony at the same AA field in Riverside christened the league on June 15, 1992.

“He really laid the foundation, the groundwork, in creating a league for guys to get together and play baseball,” said league president Lou Marshall. “The league has evolved into a pretty serious baseball league and there are quite a few really fine players.

“Bill is a great man and I can’t say enough about the guy. He’s a real pioneer, especially as far as it being a wooden bat league.”

While the league has become more competitive through the years, it was established with an emphasis on participation. It was one of the first leagues to use wooden bats, something it continues with to this day.

“I’ve had guys tell me thanks for giving them the chance to come back and play baseball again. That’s great,” said Curzie, who was recently honored by the league during its All-Star Weekend at Campbell’s Field in Camden. “Maybe someone else might have come along and done it, but I planted the seed and it’s a great feeling to know that.”

The league has grown considerably over the past two decades, boasting over 1,200 players of varying skill levels in four divisions — 18-and-over, 25-over, 35-over and 45-over. A 55-over division is coming soon.

Much like the major leagues, the season begins in April and ends as late as mid-November. There are over 200 players who have been involved since its inception and 400 are over the age of 50.

“Bill is a very unique individual,” said league vice president Neil Hourahan, also an original member. “Without Bill, so many people wouldn’t be playing baseball.

“There were high school, college and competitive college leagues in the summer, but there wasn’t a true recreational baseball league. He has brought together so many people through the years that have that common bond of baseball. These are people that just love baseball – they still live, breathe and sleep it.”

Curzie took early retirement from his job with the State Department of Education in 1992 and found he wanted to play again. He heard about a league being formed in the area and attended a meeting in Cherry Hill looking to join a team.

Instead, he left that meeting in charge of establishing the league.

And with the cooperation of many over the years, the SJMSBL continues to thrive.

“I’m still learning things today about hitting, fielding,” said Curzie, who has also organized an over-70 team that competes in national events in Florida and Arizona. “As you get older, the body doesn’t want to do what the mind says. But it’s been an interesting experience.

“The more you do it, the more you feel you have to keep doing it. If you can’t play the field any longer, you DH. Batting seems to be the last thing to go.”

Curzie hits the gym five or six days a week to help stay in shape. When he’s not playing baseball, he also enjoys leading the Sierra Club on camping trips. He participates in cross country skiing.

And for the past 12 years, he’s volunteered in preparation for the Iditarod in Alaska.

Said Hourahan: “Guys like me at 50 look up to guys like Bill. I hope to one day be in his position.”

“I’m going to keep doing it,” Curzie said. “If you stop and rest, you’ll get rusty.

“We go inning by inning, play by play. At the end of the game, we look back at certain things but we don’t think about whether we won or lost. This league has helped to keep me and a lot of guys in shape, active and having fun. What more could we ask for?”

To All Managers, Coaches, and Players –

I would like to thank you all for a successful 2012 season. We finally wrapped up Fall Ball this past Sunday with the Rangers defeating the Cruisers in the 35/45 division and the Yankees defeating the Rangers in the 18/25 division the week prior.  Congratulations to these teams and to every team that competed in the Fall season.

  There are many people who made this season a success, and I would like to take this time to thank them.  First I greatly appreciate Neil Hourahan, Mike Dunleavy, Rick Jackson, Jose Hernandez and Rey Pagan for all their hard work. There were others at the start of the season who contributed their efforts, including Dave Callahan, Mike Solmen and Paul Levin. I also thank Carl Flaherty, coordinator of Fall Ball which at times was very trying given schedules, fields and weather. Finally, I thank my predecessor, Gary Brown, for helping make the transition as smooth as possible.

  This year we held a successful All-Star weekend, 20^th Anniversary celebration, Memorial Day Tournament, and Tournament of Champions. We look forward to continuing these events in 2013 and, hopefully, we can involve more teams in the tournaments.  This was a year in which Neil and I learned what it takes to run a successful league. We hope that in 2013 we will be more proficient in the way some things are handled. I started this year with one goal in mind and that was communication. I feel we accomplished that goal, and I hope you all found us available to answer any questions and handle any problems that may have come about. It was everybody’s support and cooperation that made this year a success. I will once again, in 2013, do what I can to continue the fine brand of baseball that we have become used to.  

Managers:  You will be receiving an e-mail shortly announcing a meeting in mid-December.  Please keep an eye out for that.  

Again I thank everybody for a successful season and hope you all enjoyed it as much as me. I would like to wish everyone and their families happy holidays and a safe, healthy, prosperous New Year.

Moorestown

 On Sunday January 6, 2013 the SJMSBL lost one of it’s own, Tom Crowley passed away after a long illness. Tom was a catcher for the Moorestown Rays for years but has been inactive for a few years while fighting his illness. We truly lost one of the best people this league has to offer, whether or not he was spraying the field with hits or throwing you out while trying to steal a bases Tom gave you that infectious smile that made you realize the fun you were having. He played the game with class and dignity and with the heart of a champion. Personally my own team clashed many times with the Rays and one particular best of three playoff series I will always remember and of course Tom was right in the middle of it doing his best to beat us. Tom left a family and as a tribute to Tom the man I would like to honor him as part of this years All Star weekend. I am asking for donations as a team or individuals to try and relieve some burdens for his family. I know that we are all in the process of rounding up league fees, but in time if you could get some donations together and get them into the league c/o SJMSBL 305 Church rd. Cherry Hill,N.J.08002. At this years All Star game Tom’s family will be presented with a check and a plaque honoring him. I am proud to personally have known and competed against Tom and I am sure everyone who he has touched in his short life would feel the same. I thank you all in advance and to Tom rest in peace my friend you will always’s be loved and missed.

My name is Lou Marshall I am president of the South Jersey MSBL . On November 15, 2013 the members of the SJMSBL both past and present came together to honor the career of one of its own Jerry Milstein. Jerry has been a member of the SJMSBL since its beginning twenty three years ago. He has also been part of South Jersey baseball adult leagues for twenty five plus years. Jerry has decided to retire and relocate to sunny Florida.

As a league we felt it very important to get together and celebrate Jerry’s career and for that matter the man himself. Jerry’s manager Tom Hewitt and his team the Rangers put together a retirement celebration at their teams sponsor the Post Office Café. There were many members of the league both past and present as well as friends and family members who came together to celebrate with Jerry. He did not know this was happening and was a total surprise to him. The turnout was a tribute to the kind of person and player Jerry is. Jerry has been a teammate, friend and mentor to many across this great league. His character and passion for this game we all love is really what is the foundation of MSBL baseball. When meeting him this is obvious in the way he approached every season, every game and life itself.

A personal anecdote about Jerry, a couple of years ago I had the privilege of managing a thirty five plus all-star game. At that time Jerry’s manager Tom Hewitt came to me and said he had this guy who was coming of a bout with a serious illness and wanted to put him on the all-star team as one of his team’s representative. I said sure, “what position does he play” and Tom replied “pitcher and anywhere you need him”, I said “that’s great he is going to be the starting pitcher. “So game day came at Campbell’s Field the home stadium for the Camden Riversharks and we had a team of about twenty five players. The weather was not that great and it looked like we might get rained on. Well Jerry started the game and pitched two strong innings and got two at bats and got a base hit. Well in the third inning it was time to make substitutions and with twenty five payers it is important to get everybody in. After the third inning Jerry was out of the game and came to me and said “am I done for the day”, I replied “I will try and get you back in if I am able to”. Well the game went on and the weather was looming and a couple innings later I still had a few guy’s to get in the game and I was looking around the dugout and I saw Jerry standing on the top step with a look on his face like I have seen many times from the kid’s that I coach at the little league and freshman level. It was a look of excitement, wide eyed and the passion of a little boy stepping into a baseball stadium for the first time, smelling the grass and absorbing all that is great about this game. I thought to myself if this game continues I am putting him back in. Unfortunately the weather came and the game was cut short. That moment in the dugout with Jerry has stayed with me. I coach a freshman high school team and have made reference to that moment many times. Here was a guy who was grateful and happy and passionate about being on a baseball field and around his teammates again.

This is what makes this game the best, and this is what Jerry is all about. Not just his passion for the game but his passion for life and all that is involved in life. So Jerry my friend wherever life takes you and whatever hurdles are thrown at you live with the same passion and enthusiasm that you played this game with. The best of luck in all your future endeavors and remember wherever life takes you there is always a place in the South Jersey MSBL for you. I will think of you often and continue inspiring the young men I coach with that day at Campbell’s field a few years ago.

On a beautiful day for Baseball the SJMSBL 45+ American and National Division All-Stars got together and battled to a 15-15 tie. As there were many highlights during the game the biggest highlights came in the pre game festivities as the American Division won the Around-The-Horn Skills competition with a record 31 seconds. Kenny Echaus of the SJ Phillies won the Golden Arm Competition and slugger John Zackarkow of the Florence Indians won the HR-Derby competition.

To all members of the SJMSBL:

Once again we have completed a successful season. This past season has been a season of strength and growth. Before long everyone will be thinking of the 2014 season, I have begun already to make plans for the upcoming season. It proves to be a season which sees the SJMSBL grow and become stronger than ever before. These past two years have been a time to understand and strengthen the league, and now with a complete understanding of the needs and desires of our membership I as your president will continue to keep us at the forefront of innovation in the adult Baseball business. I thank each and every one of you for your participation and cooperation and will guarantee you all the same strong dependable leadership that Neil and I have provided.

We welcome any questions or ideas that you might have for the upcoming season because after all it is the membership that is the focus of our administrative efforts. Please keep an eye out for a winter meeting date summing up the 2013 season, and moving forward into the 2014 season. Every Manager and all new managers will be notified of the meeting date. Remember 2014 will see a large increase in the number of teams that participate which is very exciting, and will keep the SJMSBL as the premier men's baseball league. Thanks as always for all of your support and look forward to the 2014 season as the best season this league and its members has ever experienced.

The SJMSBL lost a friend on Wednesday, March 11. Joe Davis passed away. Joe played in the SJMSBL with the Medford Tigers from 2007 - 2011.

Joe Davis made a lasting impression playing first base for Cherry Hill High School East starting in 1974. His career batting average was .351, with 78 hits, 54 runs scored, 58 runs batted in, 14 doubles, five triples with a .974 career fielding percentage and 11 career home runs - at the time, most in East history

In his senior year, Davis batted .420 with 42 hits, seven doubles, three triples and seven home runs...to sum up the year, his Cherry Hill East team won All-Conference and the Group 4 Championship.

From East, Davis played the outfield for Glassboro State College(now Rowan University) where in 1979, Hall of Fame coach Mickey Briglia's squad won the Division 3 National Championship. His Pen-Del League career included six championships for his Jenkintown Quakers team. .

Joe Davis comes from an athletic family and indeed has bragging rights.....Joe's Dad, in 1992, entered the South Jersey Fast Pitch Softball Hall of Fame and his son, Joe Davis IV, in 2005, became a National Champion at Gloucester County College.

On Friday April 18, 2014 the SJMSBL lost another one of its own. John Poltonowicz passed away in a boating accident on the Delaware River. John was a new member of our league who started with us in the 2013 fall season playing for the Cinnaminson Red Marlins, for the 2014 spring/summer season he was a member of the longest standing team in the SJMSBL the South Jersey Panthers. John was an avid baseball fan with a passion for the game. He was a good team mate and a friend to all he touched on and off the field. Our condolences go out to his family, friends and team mates and we wish them peace and understanding in this time. John rest in peace. With the past few weeks being marked with the loss of two of our own let’s all keep the things that are important in life in perspective, remember to live with happiness and never take this gift we all share for granted.

2015 Toys for Tots and Holiday Food Drive

 The SJMSBL Rangers Baseball Club, along with the SJMSBL and a host of South Jersey and Philadelphia area businesses have joined together again this year to be part of the United States Marine Corp. Reserves Toys for Tots 2015 campaign. The toys will be locally collected and distributed.  Take a moment and please think about how fortunate our children  are to be out there with all of their toys and gifts on Christmas morning. Let’s help bring a little bit of happiness and smiles to the faces of all children this holiday season! Please consider collecting toys from your team, friends ,families and communities and please join us at one of the events below or call Lou Marshall (856-266-7916 ) to coordinate pick up of the toys. Every single toy counts!  Please make sure these toys are unwrapped. We are also sponsoring a holiday food drive along with the toys for tots drive .Both events will take place at Cherry Hill National Little league Complex 601 Cooper Landing Rd. Cherry Hill Saturday November 14th from 10:00am until 4:00pm please make sure all food items are non-perishable. Let’s make sure everyone has the opportunity to not go hungry and has a feeling of contentment, knowing that they can feed their families this holiday season !

·       Lou Marshall and the SJMSBL will be hosting a game to be held at the Cherry Hill National Little League complex 601 Cooper Landing Rd. Cherry Hill, N.J. for  children 6-12 yrs. of age from 1PM to 3PM. Food, drinks and great fun are on the menu. We will be there from 10am for the collection of non-perishable food items and toys.

·       Rain date Sunday November 15^th from 10am to 3pm with the game time at 12pm                                                         

·       The grand finale will be held on Sunday November 15^th  at one of our sponsors, The Post Office Café, 2696 Bridge Street, Philadelphia. Frankie and Val, the owners will be hosting a fun filled get together from 4pm – 8pm with a 3 hour open bar including bottled beer, wine, and other beverages and including their fabulous open buffet with a large sampling of their delicious food. The price to be part of this event at a private party to be held at the second floor banquet room: $20.00 per person and one unwrapped toy! A tremendous way to kick off the holiday season and have a great time with friends  and family.

The 2015 Hot Stovers Baseball Club recognizes Lou Marshall, Tom Hewitt & Walt Szwajkowski with the “Hot Stover Humanitarian Award” for their support of the SJMSBL annual “Toys for Tots” and Holiday Food Drive. The award is sponsored by the Blue Eyes Foundation; a family foundation started by Dave Townsend & his wife. It is awarded each year, recognizing “Good Will” within the South Jersey Baseball Community. Lou Marshall, Tom Hewitt & Walt Szwajkowski’s names will be added to a plaque permanently housed in the South Jersey Baseball Hall of Fame Museum located at Campbell’s Field. The award also includes a $500 check to the charity of  choice, which is the Cathedral Kitchen In Camden, N.J..

The Toys for Tots program was started some years back. It began as an exhibition game played in December and to be eligible to play in the game each player had to donate a toy. As the years past the program faded away. In 2014 I was approached by Tom Hewitt and Walt Szwajkowski managers and players in the SJMSBL about trying to reinstate this program as part of the SJMSBL’s yearly activities. The three of us took the ball and ran with it and reinstated the program. We also wanted to combine something else holiday related with the U.S Marine Corps. Reserves Toys for Tots program and a few ideas were kicked around. We decided to have a Holiday food drive to which all proceed would go to the Cathedral kitchen in Camden, N.J. Much to our surprise the program was a huge success in its inaugural year, we filled a large U.S. Marine vehicle with toys to the point where the two Marines driving the vehicle could barely fit in. We also delivered a lot of food to the Cathedral Kitchen.  The collection game is coupled with a children’s pick-up game at Cherry Hill National Little league which we use for our collection site. It is unbelievable to watch the fun the children have on this day coming together with their, fathers, mothers, friends and family playing the game we all love. We have two umpires at the game who donate their time as well and who make calls in a boisterous way that the children love, like pro umpires!

 We start this annual drive on July 25^th or the Sunday closest to that day with a Christmas in July theme during that week’s regularly schedule SJMSBL games. All of the players will donate a toy or canned good which is put in storage until mid- November. On the day of the drive everyone comes together for the event. Great support, generosity and fun are the common themes that run throughout the day. We are helped by many league members and the Camden Catholic baseball team with all that is involved with setting up and running the day’s events. We culminate the day that evening at one of our sponsors the Post Office Café in the Bridesburg section of Philadelphia. To be an attendee we ask that besides the $20.00 admission fee all coming to the event bring a toy. At this event the U.S. Marines are present and we give them all the toys we collected.

This year’s drive was the most successful to date. We expanded our food bank donations to include not only the Cathedral Kitchen but the St. Isaac Jogues Church, Society of St. Vincent DePaul food bank in Marlton, N.J. Once again when we filled the Marine vehicle with all the toys you could not have squeezed in a piece of paper. Each year this drive has grown by leaps and bounds. We have all vowed to continue to grow this event and take it to another level. We could not do it without the support of many area businesses and private donors and each year the list grows and grows. We are all very humbled and grateful at the generosity and support of just not the South Jersey and the Philadelphia baseball communities but by everyone who donates and gets involved. Remember we all can make a difference!

We would like to thank all members of the SJMSBL for their involvement in the 3^rd annual Toys For Tots and Holiday Food Drive. What an overwhelming success this event was. Every year this grows at an unbelievable level. This year we were able to donate an incredible amount of toys to the U.S. Marine Corp. Toys for Tots campaign as well as collecting in excess of $80,000.00 in food which was donated to the Cathedral Kitchen and St. Isaac Jogues Church, Society of St. Vincent DePaul Food Bank. As a result of this effort, there will be many people who will be able to feed their families and many children who will wake up to a toy on Christmas morning. This event and our used equipment charity have been huge successes for the league and we will continue them and continue to grow them yearly. I cannot think of a better way to wrap up a season by ending it with this event and giving back to the communities we play in. With that being said, thanks to all, managers, coaches and players of the SJMSBL for a great successful season and look forward to the 2017 season. May you and your families and friends have a great holiday season and a safe and healthy New Year!- Lou 

I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone who donated to this cause. We collected a lot of equipment that went to truly a great group. After talking with Bryan Morton who runs the North Camden Little League I will tell you I was blown away by his energy and enthusiasm. I am happy to announce for him that they received a charter to become part of Cal Ripken baseball at all age levels what an outstanding achievement for how far they have come as a result of Bryan and all his great coaches at the league. We will continue to support them and collect so I am urging anybody who still has some equipment it is not too late. Simply call me and I will arrange to get it from you. Montgomery County Yankees Capture SJMSBL 52+ Title

The Montgomery County Yankees, managed by Mark Greenspan, claimed the 2016 South Jersey MSBL 52+ Division Championship by sweeping the top-seeded South Jersey/Lenape Phillies (16-3-1) in the finals, 14-9 and 6-2. The Yankees (15-3-1) entered the playoffs as the #2-seed after closing out the regular season with 6 wins and a tie in their final 7 games, edging out the South Jersey/Camden County Phillies (13-3-0) for a first-round playoff bye by three percentage points. The Yankees then advanced to the finals by eliminating the defending-champion Gloucester Township Orioles, 8-4, in the semifinals.

Game of one of the finals saw the Yankees jump out to a 6-1 lead in the top of the third inning, with Marc Gold and Tony D'Aulerio each smacking 2-run doubles, before the Phillies rallied with 4 runs in the bottom of the third, another run in the fifth and 3 more in the sixth to take a 9-7 lead. David Viviani's 2-run single in the third started the Phillies' rally, while Jack Beck contributed RBI singles in both the third and sixth innings. But the Yankees responded with 4 runs in the seventh - the key hit being a Tom Koelzer bases-loaded, 2-run double - to retake the lead, and added 3 more in the ninth - the big hit being a Tom Gallagher bases-loaded, 2-run single - to ice the win. Jeff Budin (8-1) picked up the win on the mound, while Jamie Heldring pitched a stellar final 3 innings to earn the save.

Game two of the finals started out similar to the opener with the Phillies scoring in the top of the first on an RBI single by Miguel Cartagena, and the Yankees responding with 2 in the home half of the inning to take a 2-1 lead. But pitching would dominate the next 5 1/2 innings as the Yankees' Gallagher and the Phillies' Luis Rodriguez would allow only one run apiece over that span. A Joe Lynn RBI double in the bottom of the fourth pushed the Yankees' lead to 3-1, before Julio Vigo tripled to lead off the top of the fifth and scored on Mike Chmielewski's RBI single, closing the gap to a single run again at 3-2. But Gallagher (9-1), the league's Cy Young award winner, would allow only one more base runner to reach second base the rest of the way, in going the distance on the mound, while the Yankees added an insurance run in the seventh when Greenspan singled with two outs, stole second and scored on D'Aulerio's RBI single. The Yankees closed out the scoring with 2 more in the eighth. The first coming when Koelzer, the league's MVP award winner, singled, stole second, moved to third on an infield groundout and scored on a fielder's choice, and the final run on an RBI single by Budin.

During the playoffs, the Yankees' offense was paced by D'Aulerio, who went 9-for-11 with 6 RBI and 6 runs scored, including 6-for-7 in the finals with 4 RBI and 5 runs scored. Craig Stein was 5-for-11 in the playoffs with 3 RBI and 3 runs scored, while Koelzer was 4-for-9 with 5 RBI and 4 runs scored.

The league championship was the Yankees' first since 2012, when they were part of the Tri-State MSBL (now the John A. DeBenedictis League), but the 12th league championship in their 26-year history, as they won 6 Montgomery County MSBL championships (1994-1999) and 4 Bux-Mont MSBL championships (2005, 2006, 2007 & 2010).

2017 Toys for Tots and Holiday Food Drive

I would like to thank everyone for their participation this year in our 4^th annual Toys For Tots/Holiday Food Drive. It was an amazing day and without the efforts of many such a great day is not possible. In the past we filled a van with food this year we filled a 16’ UHaul cube truck from front to back and top to bottom. You literally could not have fit a piece of paper in the truck. We also hit it way out of the park with the toy collection and to all we truly made a difference, making this holiday season a little brighter for many. Again my heartfelt thanks!-

Phil Ball died unexpectantly in April of 2018. Phil had been a player-manager in the SJMSBL since 1994. He managed the Angels for 21 years. For the past 8 years, Phil played an integral part in the Rangers organization. Phil had many deeply seeded friendships formed in the SJMSBL. Generous, Loyal, intelligent & unique scratch the surface for who Phil was. He is missed by many but will not be forgotten by the SJMSBL. The 45 National Division will be named The Phil Ball 45+ National Division. Rest in Peace, my friend

Despite some rainy weather all day Friday, Tom Hewitt, one of my league managers, and I got to the field early Saturday morning this past weekend and worked hard to get the field ready, accompanied by players from my high school team at Camden Catholic High School. We were able to get it in playing condition so that the Little League from North Camden that we support as part of our summer equipment drive could play the game.  Despite some cold and windy conditions, everybody had a great time!

 The toy and food drive was a huge success. It continues to grow by leaps and bounds every year. We serve all kinds of ballpark fare, some donated and some purchased, and we have giveaways at the end for the kids to take home. We receive more and more corporate participation every year. The players and students from Camden Catholic volunteer to work the day during the drive and at the end of the day, I take all of the food donations to a local food bank in Camden called the Cathedral Kitchen. I take the players from my high school team with me to unload the truck. 

I feel it is important for them to see the inner city and to be quite frank, a not so nice part of it. I tell them when they get home to hug their Mother and Father and thank them for all they do for them. They really get to experience the importance of helping others.

The US Marines come right to the Little League complex and pick up all of the toys. It does not stop there, as on December the 8^th we have a party at one of our team’s sponsors called Bobby Rays Tavern and a donation of a toy is required for entrance. The Marines come as well to that party and pick up all of those toys. This party is open to the league and the public.

This was our fifth annual drive and plans are already underway for next year. This has become an important part of the fabric of the South Jersey MSBL and our surrounding communities. 

On a final note, the Umpire Association we use for the SJMSBL volunteers to umpire this game. We have four umpires who work the game while 53 umpires volunteered their time! On this day one of the kids showed up and did not have a glove, as he was a lefty and there were not others that he could share a glove with. Home plate umpire Don Crowe went to his vehicle and presented the young man with a left-handed glove and told him to keep it and have fun playing ball. I was floored by this, so this spring at the umpire’s annual meeting I am going to present the umpire with a brand new glove on behalf of the SJMSBL. As you can see, there were a lot of great stories on a great day!
