Bentz Gets Wayne Straightened Out
July 22, 2008 --
RADNOR - Bryan Bendowski had been scratching his head for innings on end - and it wasn't one of the Wayne coach's signals to his hitters or baserunners.
Bendowski was baffled by what he was witnessing.
Over a four-inning stretch Monday, his Main Line American Legion team went hitless, was unable to execute a hit-and-run and had two of its runners caught on the basepaths. Things were bleak for Wayne, which was vying for its first league championship in more than two decades.
Then Brooks Bentz stepped to the plate in the sixth inning ... and the offensive problems were solved. The second baseman laced a two-strike, two-out single up the middle to bring in the winning run and send Wayne to a 2-1 title-game win over Springfield at Radnor High School.
With the win, Wayne has qualified for the double-elimination state Region 3 tournament as Delaware County's representative. The eight-team field opens play this weekend at Kopper Kettle Field in Lower Southampton. It represents Wayne's first berth in this tournament since it played host to it in 2005. That was enough reason to celebrate after the game - and douse Bendowski with remnants from the dugout's water cooler.
"Nobody expected us to do this except us," said Bendowski, wringing out his jersey of icy water. "And nobody expects us to win a few more games, I'm sure."
Bentz's go-ahead single provided the offense Wayne had lacked through the middle innings. It had been without a hit since Sean Murphy's two-out single in the second. Wayne didn't have trouble putting runners on the bases (with at least one reaching in the third, fourth and fifth innings), though bringing them in was a different story.
Springfield made matters worse by putting Justin Stamm on the mound. Stamm struck out six of the 11 batters he faced, and only two of them reached base.
Bentz was one of them, as was Murphy, who walked and scored the game-winning run. "You never think about going up there to strike out, but it goes through your head when you see someone throwing like that," said Bentz, a Radnor High graduate.
"We didn't see (Stamm) when we played them before, so we were like, 'Where did he come from?'" starting pitcher Sean Grimes said. "I was just hoping one of our guys would get a hit."
That's when Bentz bailed out a lagging Wayne offense and helped improve Grimes' record to 8-2 on the year. Grimes tossed an effective six innings and allowed four hits and one run. Closer Jim McConlogue pitched a 1-2-3 seventh inning to lock up Wayne's win and its first league title since the early 1980s.
"Either way you look at it, we're in the regional tournament," Bendowski said. "We were in it in 2005, but that was an automatic bid because we hosted it. Now, we're in on our own merit. We've earned this." Bentz, McConlogue and shortstop Sam Frey are the only remaining players from that 2005 team.
"We didn't too well in that one and I think we can improve on it this time around," said McConlogue, who had an RBI single in the win.
Springfield's season came to a close despite a 2-for-3 night from Mike Morrissey, who drove in his team's lone run.

Wayne Streaks to Championship Game
Winners Bracket Final: Wayne - 5 Concord - 3
Radnor -- Number eight hitter Sean Murphy (St. Joe's Prep) and number nine hitter Sam Frey (Virginia Tech - Shipley) had two RBI each as Wayne defeated regular season champion Concord 5-3 in the winner's bracket final of the Main Line Senior Legion League.
"Our bottom of the lineup isn't like a high school's bottom of the lineup," said manager Bryan Bendowski. "We expect guys to knock in runs down there."
Ryan Kraus (Arizona - Radnor) went four innings for the win and Kyle Kopp (Radnor) went three to earn the save. Kopp now has two saves and a win in relief in the playoffs.
Murphy knocked in his first run in the second as designated hitter Anthony Knight (Radnor) scored from second base. Then, Frey's single knocked home left fielder Sean Grimes (Ursinus - Radnor) who had reached on a base on balls. The hits enabled Wayne to take a 2-1 lead.
"We're feeling good about ourselves right now," said Murphy. "We didn't play as well as we could have in the regular season."
All Peter Liebman (Friends Central), the seven hitter, did was go 2 for 2 with a sacrifice. Liebman's courtesy runner, John McCann (Shipley), scored two of Wayne's runs. Liebman's double led off the fourth and Frey knocked him home with a sacrifice fly to put Wayne ahead 4-3.
Wayne added an insurance run in the sixth. With Grimes on third and McCann running for Liebman on second, Murphy was given the suicide squeeze sign, but could not get his bat on the ball and Grimes was tagged out easily stealing home. Murphy promptly lined the next pitch for a single to left to score McCann.
Kopp entered the game in the fifth in relief of Kraus and did another masterful job. Kopp got out of a one-out first and third jam in the fifth when he got Concord's cleanup hitter Bill Marriott and five hitter Willie Putman to popout.
Concord threatened in the seventh as Steve Jacobs singled to start the inning, but Wayne then turned a double play on scrappy Lou Argentine on a comebacker to Kopp. After Justin Lamborn singled to keep the game alive, Bill Pace (3 for 3 on the day) was hit by pitch. The runners moved to second and third on a passed ball.
Then, the controversy began. Marriott grounded back to Kopp who easily threw him out at first with Marriott still standing just two steps out of the batter's box. Marriott claimed the ball bounced off of his leg, but the umpires did not see it that way and Kopp had earned another save.
Round 2: Wayne - 9 Narberth - 8
An inspired Wayne team took two days, but finally downed Narberth 9-8 in a suspended game that began in Odorisio Park and ended at Radnor High School 24 hours later.
The source of Wayne's inspiration was first baseman Marcus von Hertsenberg. Von Hertsenberg was involved in a violent collision in the third inning on a throw down the first base line and had to be medevacced from the field to the University of Pennsylvania Hospital for observation. Von Hertsenberg suffered a concussion, but inspired the Wayne team to victory.
Trailing 3-1 in the top of the fourth, Sean Grimes walked to start off the inning. When Grimes eventually got in a rundown between second and third, he didn't like the way that he was tagged out and the feisty Grimes retaliated, which led to his dismissal from the game. It also proved to be the inspiration for the Wayne comeback as Wayne sent eleven batters to the plate in the inning. Frey, Brooks Bentz (Virginia Tech - Radnor), and Kopp, who came in to replace Grimes, had RBI hits. Wayne also benefited from five walks, including those of the bases loaded variety to Adam Settle (Harriton) and Knight in the inning which led to a six run outburst and a 7-3 Wayne lead.
With ace Jim McConlogue (Lehigh - Haverford School) on the mound making his first start of the season after arm surgery in the fall, Wayne had to feel good about its chances. McConlogue went 5 1/3 innings giving up three runs while striking out five. The tall right-hander, who is hitting .554 on the season, also did his part at the plate with two hits.
Destiny faded in the sixth inning, however, as Narberth's Mike Brown belted a two out grand slam to give Narberth an 8-7 lead. Due to the injury, darkness had already set in at Odorisio Park and the game was suspended until Thursday.
Wayne came to bat in the top of the seventh against hard throwing right-hander Matt Siciliano. Liebman walked and courtesy runner McCann was sacrificed to second by Murphy. Frey then singled to send McCann to third. Nate Demmy (Wake Forest - Harriton), who averages nearly a walk a game, worked a bases on balls to load the bases for Brooks Bentz (Virginia Tech - Radnor).
After watching two fastballs, Bentz took an outside curve, then stroked an outside fastball to the right side that got between the first baseman and second baseman for a clutch two RBI single and a 9-8 Wayne lead. Bentz also appeared to be inspired by the Von Hertsenberg injury. After striking out his first two times up, the four-year starter from Radnor High School had three consecutive hits and ended the game with four RBI.
This game had everything and the bottom of the seventh proved just that. Andy Eisenlohr and Brian Hoffstein led off with singles and each were replaced by pinch runners Dave Bernstein and Elliott Yohde respectively. Bernstein and Yohde moved to second and third with no outs. With Wayne playing its infield in, Frey fielded a ground ball to his left and fired home to nail the runner with Liebman making the tag. Leadoff hitter Brett Brenner then belted a long line drive to center field where Demmy made a spectacular leaping grab to rob Brenner of a sure game winning extra base hit. The Narberth runner was so sure that it was a hit that he was already near third when the catch was made and was unable to tag up. Kopp then got Sam Shapiro on a comebacker to end the game.
As for Von Hertsenberg, he was back on the Wayne bench after being released after fifteen hours in the hospital. With his arms still bandaged and still feeling dizzy from the concussion, Von Hertsenberg said: "I'd like to help these guys out, but I think they'll understand if I sit this one out."
Round 1: Wayne - 3 Broomall-Newtown - 1
Round one was all about pitching for both teams as Wayne's Grimes and Kopp combined to toss a one-hitter against a tough Broomall-Newtown team led by ace Steve DeCecco.
Grimes yielded just one hit, to Broomall-Newtown's John Rutecki, in 5 2/3 innings of work and Kopp finished up with four straight outs for the save. DeCecco was equally strong for Broomall-Newtown as he gave up six hits and only two earned runs in the complete game loss.
Fortunately for Wayne, it bunched four of its six hits in the second inning as Grimes, Liebman, Frey and Bentz had base hits and McConlogue added a sacrifice fly to give Wayne a 2-0 lead. Frey's double to left-center in the third scored Murphy to add the third run.
This one was not over, however. A dropped catcher's third strike allowed Broomall-Newtown's Mike Mayock to score and the visitors had bases loaded when Kopp entered the game from the bullpen. Kopp, who has become accustomed to entering in these types of hairy situations, got a flyout, then retired the sides in order in the seventh for the save.

Wayne Wins a Pair
June 30, 2008 --
Wayne - 15 Clifton - 3 (Monday, June 30)
When Jim McConlogue (Lehigh) came to bat with two out in the bottom of the sixth inning and Wayne leading Clifton 15-2, there was actually some tension in the air. That's because McConlogue had already recorded a triple in the first inning, a double in the third, and a towering homerun in the fifth. All the talented 19-year-old needed was a simple base hit for the cycle--a feat that is rarer in professional baseball than even pitching a no hitter. He was walked on four pitches to end the drama.
Wayne banged out 14 hits in the 15-3 rout over Clifton. Anthony Knight, Radnor's sophomore sensation this season, had a double and two singles in his four at bats. Sean Murphy (St. Joe's Prep) smacked two RBI singles, Adam Settle (Harriton) had two singles, three runs scored, and two RBI, and Nate Demmy (Wake Forest) scored three times. In the fifth, Jon Hammer (Ursinus) belted a deep triple, then tried to score on a relay from short left field. The ball beat the burly Hammer to the plate, but Hammer nailed Clifton catcher Tom Digges on a hard slide to jar the ball loose.
Sean Grimes (Ursinus), earned his fourth win of the season for Wayne as he limited Clifton to five hits, walked none, and gave up one run in five innings of work. With the win, Wayne upped its record to 10-7-3 on the season.
Springfield - 4 Wayne - 3 (Friday, June 27)
Wayne neglected several key scoring opportunities in a 4-3 loss at Springfield on Friday night.
Leadoff hitter Brooks Bentz (Virginia Tech) singled to start the game and scored on Settle's double to give Wayne an early lead. Springfield, however, used five costly Wayne walks in the first three innings to take a 4-1 lead thanks to a three run third inning.
In the fourth, Wayne loaded the bases with one out with Marcus von Hertsenberg (Radnor) at the plate. Coach Bryan Bendowski (Shipley) called for a suicide squeeze that sent Knight streaking home on the pitch. Von Hertsenberg was unable to get his bat on the outside curve ball, however, and Knight was easily tagged out. Von Hertsenberg was retired to end the inning and the threat.
With two out and two on in the Springfield fourth, Bendowski called on Ryan Kraus (Arizona) to stop the Springfield rally. Kraus got out of the jam with a strikeout then proceeded to fan six of the seven Springfield batters that he faced.
Wayne battled back in the fifth when Bentz walked then moved to third on a single by Demmy. A McConlogue sacrifice fly scored Bentz. With two out, Knight lifted a 400+ foot fly ball to right field. Church Field in Springfield does not have an outfield fence and the shot looked deep enough to give Knight a round tripper. But, the ball struck the top of a soccer goal in right field and Knight was held up at second with a ground rule double. Had the ball been hit anywhere but the 24 foot width of the soccer goal, it would have been a tie game.
But, Wayne was not done with its scoring chances. With two out in the seventh, McConlogue singled to keep the visitor's hopes alive. Settle was hit by pitch to put runners on first and second, but Wayne was unable to plate the tieing run.
Wayne - 6 Aston - 1 (Wednesday, June 25)
Wayne scored five times in the first inning, then coasted behind some solid pitching from Kyle Kopp (Radnor), Kraus, and Corey Rogoff (Shipley) to defeat Aston 6-1.
Bentz led off the game with a base hit and Demmy reached on an error to set the stage for the red hot McConlogue. McConlogue belted a triple to left-center to score Bentz and Demmy. Settle then singled McConlogue home. Grimes walked, Hammer was nailed by an inside pitch, and John McCann (Shipley) drilled an RBI single. Wayne sent ten batters to the plate in the first inning.
Kopp worked four innings for the win. The senior from Radnor retired the first nine consecutive batters before getting touched for a run in the fourth. Kraus pitched two no-hit innings in relief and Rogoff closed the game out with a scoreless seventh.
McConlogue had four hits on the night, including a pair of triples. Settle and McCann added a pair of hits each in Wayne's ten hit effort.
|
HOMER -- Coach Bendowski makes his point that if a guy hits a ball as far as Anthony Knight did, it should be a homerun. The hit was ruled a ground rule double at Springfield.
|
DEMMY MORE -- Nate Demmy catches a fly ball then fires home at Springfield.
|
CANN DO -- John McCann attempts to turn two versus Aston.
|
TRIPLE THREAT -- Jim McConlogue went 4 for 4 including a pair of triples in Wayne's 6-1 win over Aston.

Broomall Surrenders
June 13, 2008 --
Wayne played a nearly perfect game to vanquish last year's Main Line champs Broomall-Newtown, 3-1. The game was much more lopsided than the score, as down 8-1 in the 7th, Broomall threw in the towel before completing Wayne's seventh inning.
Wayne's pitching and defense were spectacular. Sean Grimes (Ursinus), Kyle Kopp (Radnor) and Sam Frey (Virgina Tech) combined to stifle Broomall's hitters with only one run and five hits allowed. Kopp, in relief in the 5th with one out and the bases loaded, struck out the fifth and sixth hitters to end the threat. Then, Frey, faced with bases loaded in the sixth, recorded two big strikeouts and a field's choice to preserve the victory. Wayne was error-free on the day.
Wayne used timely hitting and Broomall miscues to plate runs in the 3rd and 4th. In the 3rd, Nate Demmy (Wake Forest) singled, advanced to third on a centerfielder's error, and scored on Jim McConologue's (Lehigh) single. In the 5th, Wayne staged a two out rally. Frey singled, stole second and then scored on a pair of errors by the catcher and centerfielder. Then, Marcus von Herstenberg (Radnor) singled and scored on Brooks Bentz's (Virginia Tech) double.
Wayne poured it on in the 7th. Bentz reached on an error, McConologue walked, and Bentz scored on an error off of Adam Settle's (Harriton) bat. Settle had two hits on the day. John McCann (Shipley) laid down a great bunt that the pitcher threw high to first. With the bases loaded, Wayne plated a run on a walk and then Sean Murphy delivered the knock-out with a bases clearing triple to right center. With five runs in and down 8-1 and with no hope to catch Wayne, Broomall conceded the game due to darkness.
The big victory puts Wayne at 5-3-2 overall. The next league game is against Haverford on Tuesday.

No Place Like Home
June 9, 2008 --
Wayne benefited from seven errors and defeated Clifton 4-1 on Monday night.
Jim McConlogue (Lehigh) smacked a first inning single to plate Marcus von Hertsenberg (Radnor) in the first inning. In the second inning, Wayne added a second run when Sam Frey (Virginia Tech) belted a deep double to right field to score Sean Murphy (St. Joe's Prep). McConlogue and Anthony Knight (Radnor) combined for base hits in the third as Wayne took a 3-0 lead. Wayne would add one more run in the fifth when Jon Hammer (Ursinus) stroked a double to right-center that scored his next season teammate Sean Grimes (Ursinus).
Kyle Kopp (Radnor) breezed through the first three innings, but walked three in the fourth inning to give Clifton its only run of the game. Corey Rogoff (Shipley), Grimes, and Frey finished off Clifton in the last four innings. Wayne pitchers gave up only three hits on the day.
With the win, Wayne upped its record to 4-3-2 on the season.
Friday, Wayne scored early and scored often in a 10-0 route of Springfield.
Leadoff hitter Brooks Bentz (Virginia Tech) began the game with a double, but came up lame as he hit second base and had to be removed from the game. John McCann (Shipley) was sent in to pinch run and scored Wayne's first run when McConlogue knocked him home.
Wayne added three runs each in both the second and third innings to take a commanding 7-0 lead. McCann had the key bases loaded single in the second. In the third, six consecutive hitters reached base. Adam Settle (Harriton) walked, Knight doubled, Grimes walked, and then Peter Liebman (Friends Central) delivered a bases loaded single for two RBI. Frey and von Hertsenberg followed with hits to turn the game into a blowout.
The home club added three more in the sixth as Nate Demmy (Wake Forest) tripled, Settle singled, Murphy doubled, and Brendan Connor (Radnor) ripped an RBI single.
Grimes earned the win on the hill with relief help from McConlogue and Frey.
Wayne's next game is Friday night at Broomall-Newtown.

Wayne Beats The Heat
June 1, 2008 --
Haverford -- Wayne picked up a hit in each inning, benefited from two throwing errors, and defeated Haverford 6-3 on Friday night in Main Line American Legion action at Haverford High.
In the Wayne second, Sean Grimes (Ursinus) walked and then went to third on a double to left-center by John McCann (Shipley). Both runners scored on a Haverford throwing error and Wayne scored two unearned runs to take the lead. Haverford immediately tied the game in the home second as Mike Gottfried and Matt Rooney belted back to back doubles. Rooney then scored on Ryan Dwyer's single to right.
Brooks Bentz (Virginia Tech) walked in the third, stole second, then scored on a single by Wayne designated hitter Anthony Knight (Radnor). Wayne scored again in the fourth when Sam Frey (Virginia Tech) singled, stole second and scored on another Haverford throwing error. The visitors poked another run in the fifth when Grimes singled home Kyle Kopp (Radnor) who had walked and advanced to second on a passed ball.
Wayne starting pitcher Grimes retired nine Heat batters in a row after giving up four hits in the Haverford second. But an infield error and two walks brought Kopp onto the mound from third base as the two switched positions. Kopp came in to the game with the bases loaded and got a key strikeout, then walked Gottfried to give Haverford its third run before ending the rally on a ground out to Grimes at third base.
Wayne scored an important insurance run in the sixth when Bentz belted a deep double to left-center that scored Nate Demmy (Wake Forest) from first base. Grimes gave up five hits in 4 1/3 innings and Kopp picked up the save in 1 2/3 of work. The game was called on account of darkness after six complete innings.
On Friday, Wayne and Norwood battled to a 9-9 tie in seven innings before the game was called on account of darkness after seven innings. Kyle Kopp hit his first homerun of his Senior American Legion career. The game will be completed at a later date as part of a doubleheader.

Wayne Drops Memorial Day Twinbill at Concord
On a beautiful Memorial Day, Wayne Senior Legion battled hard in Boothwyn but in the end dropped a pair of games to Concord, 6-2 and 10-7. In game one, Adam Settle (Harriton) had two hits and Kyle Kopp (Radnor) let up only one run in three innings of work in relief, but Wayne couldn't muster enough offense against the outstanding Concord's lefthander Eric van Wyk. In game 2, Wayne staged a big comeback against hard throwing Steve Stabler, highlighted by Brooks Bentz (Virgina Tech's) three run double in the sixth, but Concord's hitters kept piling on the runs to stay just ahead of Wayne. Marcus von Herstenberg (Radnor) had three hits, and Bentz, Jim McConologue (Lehigh) and Sean Grimes (Radnor) had two hits a piece. The losses dropped Wayne to 1-2-1 overall and 0-2 in league play.
|
JIM DANDY -- Wayne third baseman Jim McConlogue makes a play on a slow bouncer in the second game of a doubleheader at Concord.

A Walk in the Park
Wayne Senor Legion won its first game of the 2008 campaign with a solid 8-2 victory over Oxford. Corey Rogoff (Shipley) got the win with 5 innings on the mound, allowing only 3 hits and no earned runs, and Sam Frey (Virginia Tech) closed out the game with two solid innings, allowing only two hits.
Down 1-0 in the third, Wayne posted a run on a triple by the speedy Marcus von Herstenberg (Radnor). Then, Brooks Bentz (Virginia Tech) had a tenacious at bat, where, down two strikes, he fouled off six pitches before lifting an RBI sacrifice fly to right field. Wayne's big inning was the 4th, where they scored 6 runs on 1 infield hit by Jon Hammer (Ursinus), 8 walks and 2 wild pitches. Adam Settle (Harriton) had two hits and Sean Murphy (St. Joe's Prep) was on base all three times.
Pitching and defense led the rest of the way. The highlight was an unusual 5-2-6-4 double play to end the game, where with runners at second and third and one out, Murphy fielded a grounder at third and hung up the third base runner in a rundown; John McCann (Shipley) swung over to make the tag at third and then gunned down the batter trying to advance to second.
Wayne is now (1-0-1) overall, and the league fun starts with a double header against Concord on Monday.

Wayne Starts 2008 Campaign
Wayne Senior legion started the 2008 campaign with a darkness-shortened 8-8 tie against perennial City League Champion Ivy Ridge. Wayne answered Ivy Ridge's first inning 2-0 lead by plating two runs in the first on a single by Marcus von Herstenberg (Radnor), scoring Brooks Bentz (Radnor/Virginia Tech) and Jim McConologue (Lehigh).
Wayne's big inning was in the fourth, where the team batted around. Down by a score of 4-2, Sean Grimes (Radnor/Ursinus) walked, Jim McConologue - who was 3 for 4 on the day - singled, and Anthony Knight (Radnor) walked. With the bases loaded and no outs, von Herstenberg hit a sharp grounder to third that was misplayed for a run. Spencer Holm (Radnor) drove in a run on a fielder's choice, Kyle Kopp (Radnor) singled in a run and Jon Hammer (Harriton/Ursinus) reached on an infield hit. With the bases loaded again, Sam Frey hit a sacrifice fly to center. Holm scored, and on the slide, the ball squirted out of play, scoring Kopp. Then Adam Settle (Harriton) capped the scoring with a big double down the left field line.
Despite a 4 run lead and some stellar defensive play, a tenacious Ivy Ridge team closed the gap, with a three run home run in the 5th and a run in the 6th on back to back hits.
