The "SYSTEM"
February 10, 2005 --
As I read the article in the Middletown Journal today about the "System" that the Middletown Basketball Team use to have under Paul Walker in the 50's and 60's, a time when they went to the state championships 10 of 16 times and won the state championship 7 times, I was inspired to write this note about the program or "System" that we are trying to build here with the Middletown Wrestling Team. A "System" that develops young athletes and helps them to be as good as they can be. A "System" that is solid from top to bottom and side to side. A "System" that will produce state team championships and state individual champions for The Middletown Wrestling Program. Most of all a "System" that will produce well rounded, well mannored, well minded, young adults.
You are all probably thinking he is crazy. How can the coaching staff of the Wrestling Team build a "System" that rivals that of Paul Walker? The same guy that the gym is named after? The same guy who won 7 State Championships in 16 Years? You are also probably wondering, how can a basketball "System" be compared to a Wrestling "System"?
The answer to these questions are not easy and rivaling the "system" that Paul Walker had is not going to be easy, but a "System" is where the answer lies. A "System" is the only way that a program can be made to produce the top quality athletes that we know we have in Middletown.
A "System" is a way of recruiting and developing young athletes. A "System" is a way of bringing them into the Middletown Wrestling Family. A "System" is a structure that lets a young athlete know that he is part of something big, no matter how good or bad(undeveloped)he or she is.
The "system" is not only made up of the Coaches. The "system" is made up of Coaches, Wrestlers, Parents, Teachers, Former Wrestlers, Administrators, Sponsors, The tournaments that we attend, the practice facility and on and on....
What is the purpose of the "system"? You ask.
The purpose of the system is to develop young boys into self reliant, responsible adults. This is it's only purpose. State Championships and Wins are just a by-product of the system. I will be the first to tell you that the destination is not as important as the journey to that destination. If a child wins the state tournament, Great! If a child loses every match he wrestles, what should be the feeling? I think as long we have helped him to be self confindent and have a positive self esteem then the "System" is working.
The wrestlers are why we are all here.
Please come help us build this "system". As parents, we have a duty to our children to build this "System".
After this season we will be holding "system" building meetings periodically. Please let us know if you would be interested in joining together with us to start this process.
