The Sentinel Newspaper story on the Mad Mats Tournament

QO Smashes Seneca

The Cougars record 9 pins and take 4 forfeits on way to a 78-3 route of the Screaming Eagles.

QO vs Watkins Mill

QO’s varsity grapplers walloped the Watkins Mill Woverines 64-9 in a Tuesday evening home match.
Six Cougars pinned their opponents: Seniors Ross McCormick and Eisley Kim; Juniors Alec Falconer, Bret Williams and Ramsey Richey and Freshman Jay Bollinger. Junior Blake Adkins recorded a 17-9 major decision. Watkins Mill did not have wrestlers in five weight classes which earned forfeits and 6 team points for:: Jose Echeona, Antonio Lopez, Alejandro Lopez, Jarret Kowalski and Tyler Enceneat.

Injury Depleted Cougars Fall to Clarksburg

QO suffered their loss of the season, a heartbreaker to Clarksburg, who benefited from winning the opening coin flip. The Cougars werre missing a few of their key wrestlers and won 7 of the 14 bouts. However Coyotes earned extra bonus points by pinning in all 7 of their wins while QO earned wins on 4 pins, 1 forfeit and 2 decisions. Seniors Danny Henn (160 lbs) and Eisley Kim (195 lbs) and Sophomore Alejandro Lopez (132lbs) all pinned their opponents. Freshman Jay Bollinger (138 lbs) earned a decision after the 3rd period of overtime and Junior Bret Williams (170 lbs) also added 3 points to the Cougars’ total with his win. Junior Alec Falconer (145 lbs) picked up a win by forfeit.
Clatksburg’s 152 pounder missed weight but because they win the coin toss and chose “even” QO had to present their wrestler, Ale Falconer, first in the 145 lb matchwhich was an odd numbered match (the 5th). Clarksburg chose to forfeit to Alec and have their 145 pounder wrestle against QO’s freshman wrestler who also weighed in at 145 lbs which was a better matchup for the Coyotes as they earned 6 team points with a pin. Had Clarksburg chosen to face the tough and experienced Falconer, they would have likely lost by fall and gone 0-12 in those two matches and instead came away with a 6-7 split. The varsity Cougars look to rebound on Thursday when they travel to Walt Whitman HS to face the Vikings. Eisley Kim cradles his Clarksburg opponent for the win!

QO falls to Walt Whitman

The Cougars travelled to Bethesda to face the unbeaten Walt Whitman Vikings. This was an exciting back and forth competition that went down to the last match. Whitman earned a pin and a technical fall in the last two bouts of the evening to break a 31-31 tie and go ahead 42-31 to remain unbeaten. Quince Orchard picked up six team points each with falls by Seniors Antonio Lopez and Eisley Kim (both still undefeated for the season) along with Junior Edwin Portillo. Senior Tyler Enceneat also out six team points on the board when Whitman chose to forfeit to him. Freshmen Jay Bollinger and Jose Echeona recorded a major decision and a decision respectively.

Cougar Claus

Quince Orchard hosted its 5th Annual Cougar Claus Dual Holiday Wrestling Tournament on Dec 30th & 31st. Six teams from Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia competed. Reservoir High School was 5-0 on the first day with the host Cougars 4-1, followed by Northwest at 3-2, Rock Ridge 2-3, Berkeley Springs 1-4 and Patuxent 0-5. QO faced Northwest again on day two and won 42-27. Reservoir beat Northwest as well to set up a championship match with the Gators and Cougars. QO had lost by 12 to Reservoir on Wednesday so need to win by 13 points or more to earn the tournament championship. After a back and forth match in which QO had a 6 point lead going into the next to last match, Reservoir pulled out a 39-36 victory to leave with the tournament championship trophy. Eisley Kim was given the award for the fastest pin earned when he defeated his Patuxent opponent with a fall time of 6 seconds.

Hub Cup

Quince Orchard’s varsity wrestlers traveled to Hagerstown to take part in host North Hagerstown High School’s 29th Annual Hub Cup Tournament. The Cougars, who are regular participants in this tournament, use this as an opportunity to test and improve their skills against many of the top public and private school teams and wrestlers in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Many weight classes in this tournament can be much tougher than the Maryland State tournament. This year’s tournament had one of the toughest fields ever, led by eventual champion Good Counsel, not only the highest ranked team in the DMV but they also are currently ranked nationally.

QO had four wrestlers earn placement, led by Senior Antonio Lopez who finished 3rd in the 120 lb weight class. The two top finishers in this class were both state champions last year in their respective public and private school state tournaments. Antonio beat the formerly 9th ranked wrestler in Maryland, Chris Sanchez of Good Counsel.

Senior Eisley Kim was also battling for a 3rd place medal in the 195 lb weight class. He was handily beating his opponent from Catoctin High School when he was called for an illegal move. The trainer recommended that this wrestler not continue which by rule allowed him to win by default leaving Eisley with a 4th place finish.

Freshman Jose Echeona earned 6th place honors in a very talented field of 106 pound wrestlers.
Junior Jarret Kowalski finished with a 7th place finish and coming very close to winning the tournament’s “Fastest Pin” award with a 10 second fall of one of his opponents.

Sophomore Alejandro Lopez (126 lbs), Freshman Jay Bollinger (132 lbs) and Juniors Alec Falconer (145 lbs) and Bret Williams (170 lbs) all earned wins which added to Quince Orchard’s team total. QO finished in 14th place out of 20 teams.

QO takes down Northwest and Poolesville at Tri-Meet

The Cougar wrestlers won 8 of the 14 bouts. Senior Antonio Lopez wrestling at 120 lbs started the Cougars off with a 6 point fall. Sophomore Alejandro Lopez followed his brother with a dominant 4-0 decision. Junior Blake Adkins came up big with a 6-2 victory in the 160 lb match. Senior Eisley Kim bumped up to the 220 lb weight class and earned a 7-4 win. Senior Captain Tyler Enceneat moved up from his normal 220 lb spot to face Northwest’s heavyweight who he pinned in a quick 37 seconds. Jose Echeona sealed the win for QO with a 2nd period fall. Junior Brett Williams bumped up from 170 lbs to face Poolesville’s 182 pounder and earned six team points with a 1st period pin. Senior Eisley Kim, wrestling back in his 195 lb spot, made quick work with a 52 second pin. Senior Captain Tyler Enceneat, wrestling in his familiar 220 lb weight class, took care of business with a swift 24 second fall. With three matches left to go, freshman Jose Echeona just needed to win to clinch the match which he did with a 7-5 decision. Senior Antonio Lopez faced Poolesville’s higher ranked 120 pounder but that ranking will now change as Antonio was dominant in his 8-1 win giving the Cougars 9 wins to Poolesville’s 5 and an overall team win by 12 points.
