    LB-John Winchester -La.Monroe #12
    Position:LB/FB 6'2 245
    Height:6'3
    Weight:245
    Comments:LB John Winchester (6-2, 246, Louisiana-Monroe)
2005 NFL Camp with Cleveland Browns.A mainstay at linebacker for UL-Monroe during the past four seasons, Winchester led the Indians with a career-high 105 tackles (19 for loss) during his senior season to bring his career total to 318 takedowns (35 for loss), two sacks, three interceptions, four pass breakups, three forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries.

    College Profile
With Maurice Sonnier, he formed one of the best linebacker combinations in the Sun Belt Conference in 2003 and now with Sonnier gone, he steps up as the main man in ULM's linebacker corps and a prime candidate for all-conference honors. He was second behind Sonnier, a second team all-SBC choice in team tackles last year with 91, only two behind Sonnier. He was 11th in tackles among all players in the Sun Belt last year and ranked eighth among linebackers. Last fall he shared two ULM `Warrior" awards for outstanding play, one for the Louisiana-Lafayette game and for the North Texas game. He suffered a serious knee injury on the final day of spring practice in 2002 but he came back strong in the second half of that season and kept going full blast in 2003. After spring practice this year, linebackers coach Danilo Robinson said, "John had a great spring and continues to be the leader and anchor of our defensive unit, both physically and vocally. He has tremendous speed for a linebacker--he covers the field from sideline to sideline. Plus he is a very smart player." He had three solo tackles in the Maroon-Gold game.
2003: Winchester shared two ULM "Warrior" awards for outstanding play in the win over Louisiana-Lafayette when he made seven unassisted tackles and in the near-miss against SBC champ North Texas in which he had nine tackles (two solos, seven assists) including one and a half tackles for four yards in losses. These were not, however, his most productive games numerically--he had 15 tackles against New Mexico State (six solos, nine assists), including a three-yard sack; 12 against Troy State (8-4), plus a forced fumble; 11 against future national champ LSU (1-10); and 10 (4-6) vs. Northwestern State. He had seven tackles against Ole Miss (4-3); six against Arkansas State (3-3); and five against Auburn (4-1), including a two-yard TFL. He had four tackles (2-2) against Idaho, three (2-1) vs. Utah State, and two (1-1) against Stephen F. Austin.
2002: He missed the first four games of the season in recovery from the spring practice knee injury but still finished third on the team in tackles with 74 (36 solos tackles, 38 assists), and was named to the Sun Belt Conference Honor Roll for outstanding achievement in the classroom. Five of his tackles were for 15 yards in losses, including a half sack for three yards, he broke up one pass and he forced a fumble. He started the final eight games at the "Chief" linebacker position, seeing his first action against Tulane and making seven tackles (4-3), including one for lost yardage, and breaking up a pass. Made 11 tackles (7-4) in the win over Idaho, then was named "Defensive Player of the Week" for his work in the New Mexico State game in which he made seven stops (4-3). He caused a fumble with a special teams tackle vs. Utah State and totaled eight tackles, two for lost yardage, in the win over the Aggies. Had three solo tackles and one assist at North Texas and made 13 total stops (8-5) at Auburn. He made 14 tackles (5-9), including one for lost yardage, at Middle Tennessee before finishing the year with seven tackles (1-6) in the victory over Louisiana-Lafayette.
2001: After making the move from defensive back to linebacker in the spring, he developed into one of ULM's defensive standouts. Became a starter at the "Will" linebacker spot in the fourth game and started seven of the last eight contests. Finished fifth on the team with 48 tackles, 19 unassisted. His 7.5 tackles for 24 yards in losses rank
