Seals College NewsSeptember 17, 2007
The Seals look to keep tabs on their players during their college season, and bring you information about the players and their teams. This week:
USF: You have to love the way these guys are playing. The beat CAL on Friday night in convincing fashion. Sunday night they beat Stanford in overtime, only 48 hours later. They've got 4 wins against only one loss. Victor Cortez played centerback next to the Rodd Father for the whole 90 minutes and did very well. Jesse Henderson is back from his foot fracture and is looking stronger each game. Kyle Schlumpf had another good game at defensive mid. Eric Conner was not in goal this game. USF has some new recruits that have brought some depth and a spark to their game. The one remarkable difference is that USF is not playing the usual kick and run game. There's some real soccer happening. Check it out against UCLA. Don't be surprised if USF upsets another front runner.
SJ State: San Jose State (Efrain Burgos Jr) beat Riverside on the road on Friday night. Junior scored a set piece goal. Unfortunately they lost today to Irvine. They play Santa Clara on Thursday. St. Mary's: There aren't any ex-Glens or ex-Seals on the St. Mary's team (Dave Vedder injured his knee again and Carlos Diaz took a leave of absence and will soon join the Glens), however, two ex-players are coaching the teams. Ryan Edwards played for the Seals when we were in the A League and Kellan Wilson played for the Glens before he signed with Osnabruck.
Cal Poly SLO: Cal Poly men's soccer (Alex Peterlin and Anthony Grillo) found its way into the polls Sept. 4 as the Mustangs landed a spot at No. 10 in the NSCAA/ADIDAS poll for the Far West Region. Cal Poly tied with San Jose State (2-0) and Stanford (0-0-1) for No. 10 on the list. The Mustangs defeated Loyola Marymount (0-1) over the weekend, 2-0, and turned a few heads on Aug. 21 by defeating No. 7 Cal (1-0), 3-1, in an exhibition match. Santa Clara (2-0) was voted the top team in the Far West. Cal was No. 2 followed by UCLA (0-2), Washington (1-0-1), Cal State Northridge (1-0), UC Santa Barbara (0-1-1), New Mexico (1-1), San Diego State (0-0-1) and UC Irvine (2-0).
Next up for CPSLO are the Wright State Raiders from Ohio, who were defeated Sunday by St. Mary's, 2-1.
Christian Brothers: Matt Werakso has scored once in each of the last two games, leading his team in back-to-back 2-0 wins.
