Cobras Claim 2009 Maryland Babe Ruth State Championship
The Cecil County Cobras 15u are 2009 Maryland Babe Ruth 13-15 Division State Champions. Cecil County Babe Ruth hosted the event with games played at Babe Ruth Field on Bard Cameron Road and Johnies Field on Mechanics Valley Road. Eight teams from around the state of Maryland participated in the tournment with the Cobras coming out on top with a record of 5 - 0. The Cobras claimed the American bracket title going 3-0 with wins over Smithsburg, Prince George's and Mt. Airy. The team from Frederick American Babe Ruth won the National Division bracket title going 3-0 with wins over West Carroll, Queen Anne's and Frederick National Babe Ruth.
Cecil got to the championship game by knocking off a very strong Queen Anne's team in the semifinal game with a walk-off hit in the bottom of the seventh inning. Frederick defeated Prince George's in their semi-final game to set up the showdown with the Cobras.
In the Championship game, after winning the coin toss for home team, the Cobras got off to a good start by shutting down Frederick in the top of the first and then scored three in the bottom half to jump out front early. The Cobras never looked back and managed to stay in the lead throughout the game against a very powerful Frederick Team.
The Cobras will now travel to Saugerties, NY for the Mid Atlantic Regional and will face teams from Delaware, Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey.
