East L.A. College defensive back Darius Turner received his third American Division Mountain Conference defensive player of the week honor after recording a season-high 15 tackles in the Huskies’ 40-21 home loss to division champion San Bernardino Valley Saturday.

The sophomore from Dorsey High School had four solo tackles, a tackle for loss (of four yards) and a fumble recovery.

Turner and the rest of the defense was busy trying to stop San Bernardino running back Kristin James, who earned offensive player of the week honors after scoring five touchdowns.

The sophomore rushed 21 times for 146 yards and finished with 186 yards total. He came into the game needing only 67 yards to set the school single-season rushing record.

ELAC’s Jared Davis, a sophomore from Locke, was a nominee for the special teams/all-purpose honor because he had two punt returns for 84 yards, including an 81-yard runback for a TD, plus a 41-yard kickoff return.

The Huskies finished the season 4-6 overall and in third place in the conference at 3-2.
