Behind solid play on both sides of the ball, the Bulldogs won five of six games, including a 14-8 overtime decision over Morningside in Saturday’s championship game, during the 7-on-7 passing tournament.

“I learned we have resilience and just won’t quit,” the Garfield coach said. “When we lost to Morningside the first time, the game got pretty heated. They pounded us that time, but we bounced back. These kids don’t give up. They refuse to lose.”

Senior quarterback Javier Alcantar threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Adrian Longoria in overtime to give Garfield the decision over the Monarchs in the title game. Roy Fonseca caught a scoring pass in regulation to account for the other points.

Garfield, coming off a 13-1 season in which it reached the City Invitational Division title game, will be counting on a lot of new faces in 2007. Seniors manned all of the starting skill position spots a year ago.

Although the offense was inconsistent during a tourney in which the Bulldogs defeated Bell twice, Belmont, Bishop Montgomery and Morningside, the defense stood out.

Returning All-City linebacker David Lopez, the Eastern League’s Defensive MVP, was outstanding at ELAC.

“He was putting everybody on their backs,” Hernandez said. “He went to the Nike Sparq camp in Cerritos and was very impressive. He just has great physical attributes.

“Our defense really helped us out a lot here. Morningside releases all of its backs out of the backfield, but we did a good job of coverage.”

With Bell, Roosevelt, South Gate and Huntington Park also in the Husky Shootout, Hernandez got a good idea of what to expect during Eastern League play in the fall.

“Roosevelt looked pretty good,” he said. “What a difference a year makes. Huntington Park looked good, too. I saw South East earlier this summer and they look improved. Jordan has everybody back. I think this league is going to be tough.”
