Aaron Cantu threw three touchdown passes to Carlos Arredondo to lift Schurr High School past Alhambra last Friday in an Almont League football opener.

The Spartans, who play at Keppel Friday, improved to 3-3 overall. Alhambra, which is at Montebello Friday, is 3-2.

Cantu connected with Arredondo on scoring passes of 14 and 20 yards in the first half for a 14-0 lead. Then with the Spartans trailing, his nine-yard scoring toss to Arredondo with 2:48 left tied the score at 21-all.

Then with 43 seconds remaining, Nick Castillo’s three-yard capped a final drive and gave Schurr the victory.

The Moors came back before halftime when Darrian Cazarin threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Mitchell Crockom.

In the third period, Crockom threw a scoring pass of his own, a four-yarder to Dominic Gonzalez to tie the score. Then Brandon Wilson’s one-yard run gave the Moors a temporary lead.

Schurr’s defense made it tough on Cazarin, who was 7 of 24 for 94 yards with three interceptions.
