Garfield races past South Gate

Garfield High School’s first victory of the season came at just the right time.



Already with an Eastern League loss on the ledger, the Bulldogs put together a solid performance in defeating South Gate, 31-14 Friday.

Garfield, which had a rugged preleague schedule, is 1-5 overall and 1-1 in league. South Gate is 3-3, 0-2.

Nicky Peralta passed for two touchdowns and Lance Fernandez scored three in Friday’s game.

Peralta was 8 of 13 for 130 yards, including a 34-yard scoring toss to Fernandez and a 35-yarder to Darrell Cloy.

Fernandez carried 10 times for 111 yards and also scored on one- and 35-yard runs.

Marcelino Reyes and Jonathan Valles had eight tackles each to lead the Garfield defense. Reyes had an interception.









Jordan 25, Huntington Park 14
Gilbert Rivera passed for 174 yards and two TDs to lead Jordan (2-4, 2-0) past Huntington Park (2-3, 0-1) in the Eastern League game.

Denzale Lee added 18 carries for 102 yards for the Bulldogs, who are tied for first place with South East.

Robert McCovery scored two TDs. He had a run of 45 yards and two catches for 65 yards. James Parks and Marlon Taylor each scored TDs.

Taylor and Tyrell Chance led the defense with 10 tackles each.

For Huntington Park, quarterback Johnathan Gaeta had 18 carries for 128 yards and two TDs and was 5 of 15 for 73 yards passing.

Nonleague
Lincoln 56, Torres 3
Brando Lopez threw for 250 yards and four TDs as Lincoln rolled to a 56-3 nonleague victory over Torres Friday.

Lopez was 11 of 17 and backup Gilbert Soto added a fifth scoring pass in helping the Tigers improve to 5-0. They now head into Northern League play.

Gilbert Hernandez caught two passes, both for TDs, covering 102 yards. The big one was an 82-yarder.

Arthur Chavez, Melvin Valencia and Danny Guerra also caught TD passes. Guerra also rushed for a TD and carried nine times for 81 yards. Roger Lemus rushed for 73 yards and a TD on seven carries.

In other action involving Northern League teams, Franklin (3-2) lost to Verdugo Hills, 16-12, and Marshall (3-2) crushed SOCES, 71-0, scoring 50 points in the first quarter.

Anthony Benitez threw for 101 yards and four TDs for Marshall.

California 28, Montebello 7
Drew Castro passed for 100 yards and two TDs and Gabriel Lozano rushed for 100 yards and scored two TDs in leading California past Montebello in the nonleague game.

Castro completed all five of his passes, including the scoring ones to Lozano and Ethan Martinez.

California is 4-1, Montebello 2-3.

Cantwell SH 45, Whittier Chr. 21
Corey Collins had a huge all-around game in leading Cantwell Sacred Heart to a 45-21 nonleague victory over Whittier Christian.

Collins carried eight times for 137 yards and three TDs, caught one pass for 46 yards and threw a scoring pass.

Jared Gonzalez added 102 yards and two scores on 19 carries and Timothy Walsh completed 12 of 21 passes for 215 yards. Jacob Alaniz caught seven for 141 yards and Adam Aguirre hauled in the TD pass.

Cantwell improved to 3-2. Whittier Christian is 3-3.
