    AILL News: Tournament at Satterfield

    Dear Athens International Parents,

It has been over a month since the last regular season game was played at Satterfield.  Since then, our minor league team, Wisevest (with a few Advanced Plumbing players to complete their roster), won the city championship.  Congratulations players and coaches!

Beginning tomorrow, June 28, and continuing through Friday, AILL is hosting the junior league all-star tournament.  Our own AILL junior team plays their first game beginning at 8:30 Monday night.  For a bracket of the tournament, go to our website www.leaguelineup.com/athensinternational , and click on the link on the homepage.  Come out and enjoy some good baseball while supporting the AILL team.

Our 9 & 10 year old all-star team began the district tournament today in Washington with a win.  The 7 & 8 all-stars began their tournament at the fields in Bogart with a loss.  The 11 & 12 year old all-star team begins play on July 11 in Masters City (outside Augusta).  Best of luck to all the teams.

Lastly, I wanted to remind everyone of our team and sign sponsors.  As you know, we began the year in debt.  We made some cost cutting decisions this year (for instance, we chose a cheaper hat than we would have liked) that really helped keep our expenses down.  I'm happy to report that we have now paid all our debts off and will end the year with funds in the bank.  Thanks to Ed Siemion for organizing and you for participating in our fundraiser, as it was a HUGE success.  Also thanks to Bulldog Sporting Goods and ABC Printing for allowing us to carry the debt over the year.  Below are our team and sign sponsors.  Please look over this list and patronize these businesses and thank them for their support of our league.

    2009 All-Star Sign-ups

This week (beginning May 11) marks the beginning of sign-ups if you want your child to be considered for an All-Star team. There are All-Star teams in the minor, major, and junior leagues. Click here for a form to fill out and turn into your child’s coach. Dates and location of the tournaments are on the form.

Board Meeting – I wanted to let everyone know that there is an A.I.L.L. board meeting on Saturday night at 7:30 at Satterfield. I’m sorry for such late notice, but we just finalized the date and time recently due to the board members availability. All board meetings are open to any parent in the league. Although no one has asked about this, if you want to address the board at a meeting, please let Tim Mattox know (mattox25@msn.com) before the meeting to get on the agenda.

Junior League – Many of you may not know that we have two junior league teams that are playing now. There are junior games tomorrow (Friday) night at 6:30 pm and Saturday at noon and 2 pm at Satterfield.

    Weekend Schedule @ Satterfield

    • Coach Pitch
      • Evening Optimist vs. Badcock @ 10 am
      • Edward Jones vs. T & E Plumbing @ 11:45 am
    • Major League
      • Locos vs. Oglethorpe – 2 games – 10 am and 2 pm
      • Chick-fil-A vs. Oglethorpe – 2 games – noon and 4 pm
    • Junior League games mentioned above.

Come out and cheer on the local teams.

Challenger League - Some of you also may not know that the Challenger League plays each Monday night on the softball fields. Mixon’s Towing and Logan’s Towing are the team sponsors. If you are at the park on Monday night, go by the softball fields and cheer on these dedicated players.

T-Ball – Games are played each Tuesday night at 6 at Satterfield and at Holland on Saturdays. This Saturday Nancy Flowers plays at 9 am and Mama Sid’s at 1 pm.

Softball – There are no softball games at Satterfield this weekend (games are away), but they play on Tuesday (Seniors @ 7:45 pm), Thursday (Majors @ 6 pm; Seniors @ 7:45), and Friday (Minors @ 6 pm).

Dear Athens International parents and guardians,

I wanted to pass along some information about games and the park. Please read these announcements below.

Rain Days – There were lots of calls and emails yesterday (Monday, 5/4) about whether or not there would be games last night. The board tries to wait as long as possible if we feel there is a chance to play games before making a decision to cancel them. Although it rained around noon yesterday (hard in some places), we didn’t feel like we needed to make a decision at that time to cancel games. If we know that it has rained too much to try to get the fields in condition to play, then we’ll call the games early; however most of the time we will wait as long as possible if we think the games can be played. When games are called, we will notify the coaches and let them get the word out to parents. If you don’t hear from the coaches, please assume the game is still on. But please realize we may not make a decision until late in day, so please be considerate by not calling the coaches too early as they can get a lot of phone calls in the midst of a busy day at work. With the forecast for this week, we may have to make some last minute decisions about games. Thanks for your help with this.

Thanks! – A big thank you needs to go out to Jeff Summers and Kerry Herndon for the work they did on the fields yesterday afternoon to get them ready for games last night. They did a great job making the fields playable.

Satterfield Restrooms Painted and Unavailable – Please be aware that the restrooms at Satterfield will be painted on Wednesday, May 6, and will be closed ALL DAY to allow them to dry. If you are at the park anytime on Wednesday, May 6, the restrooms will be unavailable. Please take note of this. They should be open and usable on May 7.

Concessions – A big thank you needs to go out to Jeremiah Wiggs, Annette Wiggs, and Kim Mattox for the many hours that they spend running the concession stand. Although Annette’s work schedule changed and she had to step back from some responsibilities, she still gets there when she can and stays late often. Jeremiah fills in to help set up, and Kim has taken on the lion’s share of the responsibility of the concessions. Thank these folks when you see them. Also, parents, thank you for your service in the concession stand as well.

    Games Cancelled
    April 14, 2009

All games have been cancelled due to the weather. All games will be made up at a later date.

    Games Cancelled
    April 13, 2009

As you can image, the fields are flooded today (Monday) so all games scheduled for tonight are cancelled. Hopefully the games scheduled for tomorrow night will be able to be played.

Also I wanted to pass along some information about the fields being closed on Wednesday. We received the following late last week.

Subject: Spraying Poa on ball fields

I just got off the phone with Southern States and they would like to schedule spraying at Satterfield next Wednesday the 15th. Holland Sports on Friday the 17th. Bishop Park Friday the 17th. I got him to bring two trucks so hopefully they can finish in one application and only one cancellation of your programs. I know the inconvenience is terrible timing now due to rain outs but we need to get this done ASAP.

Of course this is WEATHER PERMITTING .

The fields should be opened again on Thursday for games. Thanks for your flexibility. By the way, we will do all we can to reschedule rainout games. We’ll consult with the coaches and try to plan an alternate time that fits their schedule.

    Master Schedule

    Dear Parents,

The much anticipated season schedule is located below. Sorry it has taken so long to finalize, but it wasn’t too simple of a job coordinating with three other leagues. Thanks to Tim Mattox for working on this and Vince and Kesha Edmonds for formatting it. Let me know if you can’t read it. You coach may also give you a copy for just your league. 2009 Master Schedule

Also, many of you have asked about the season schedule.  That will be completed this weekend after Tim has a chance to finalize plans with other league teams (everyone is scrambling because of the rain outs); however, below is the schedule for next week and Saturday.  We thought it best to go ahead and get a few games under our belt before the official “Opening Day” ceremonies. Softball is not listed, but Mark will get that to you as soon as it is finalized or your coach will let you know.  Also remember that the practice schedule that you have been using is no longer valid, as games now take precedent.  Talk with your coach about potential practice locations and times.

    March 26, 2009

Opening Day – As you know, opening day is scheduled for Saturday; however the weather forecast doesn’t look promising for those games to take place. If we do get rained out, we will still go ahead with pictures at Tuckston Methodist Church with the same schedule that was originally given.

Field Information – Once the season begins, the practice schedule that we have been using will no longer be valid because games will be played on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday nights as well as Saturdays. We’ll try to get a schedule soon for availability of the fields, including the junior and senior fields, where you can continue to practice. Also, from now on, the gates will be locked near the softball fields and near the junior field. The gate to the right and left as you first turn in should be open for you to park in those areas. There are a lot of kids running around between the fields and concession stand that driving through the area between the fields has become dangerous. Thanks for your understanding with this.

Schedule – If opening day is rained out, we are making plans to have opening day activities and ceremony next Saturday, April 4. However, some of the games will change from this week’s because Oglethorpe will be having their opening day that same day. We’ll also get a schedule to you for next week, as we will start the season this coming week.

Coupon Books – It is imperative that we get either the money or unsold coupon books very soon. Ed Siemion will be at Satterfield tonight (Thursday) from 6 to 7 pm in the front parking lot (near the tennis courts) to receive your money or books. Please give attention to this as you will be responsible for any books that we don’t receive back. Thanks.

    March 15, 2009

Coupon Books – First, let me say a big THANK YOU to those who participated in the coupon books sales. This fund raiser is critical to our league getting on sound financial footing. Many of your turned in your money or left over booklets this past week; however, if you have any coupon books or money from sales that you have not turned in, we MUST have the booklets or the money this week. Ed Siemion will be at Satterfield on Tuesday and Thursday nights from 6 to 8 for you to turn this in. On Tuesday he will be on the softball field with his softball team, but you can drop you stuff off to him there. On Thursday, he will be in the concession stand. If you need to make other arrangements to get him your money or booklets, you can call him at 706-583-9440 or email him at thesiemions@bellsouth.net. Please give this attention this week. Also, please try to sell any books you have left over the next several days, as this will benefit the league greatly.

Use of Fields – I know the rain makes scheduling practices difficult, especially if your team’s practices at Satterfield seem to get rained out a lot. The coaches will try to get practices in wherever they can find an open field, so please help them as they make adjustments. Also, the company who was supposed to spray the field last Friday but postponed is schedule to spray the fields on Friday. Therefore, at this point the fields are scheduled to be closed on Friday.

Thanks for helping make our league great!

    Fields Closed

    ATTENTION ALL PARENTS AND PLAYERS

All fields and batting cages will be closed until Saturday, March 7, 2009 due to the weather.

    March 2, 2009

    Dear A.I.L.L. parents and guardians,

I know everyone was rained out last night and today (Saturday) for your practice time. As much as we need the rain, I know that is still frustrating. It will happen again to other teams (I hope we get the rain anyway), but we’ll just have to make the adjustments. The fields will look much better for it this spring.

COUPON BOOKS – Many of you are doing a great job with the coupon book sales. Please keep it up, as it really helps the league and it gives your child a better chance of winning one of the prizes. However, some parents have not picked up their coupon books yet. PLEASE contact Ed Siemion at thesiemions@bellsouth.net or 706.583.9440 to get your packet of books. Ed will try to work with you in any way to get the books to you. We need EVERY player/family to sell at least 5 books in order to maximize our profits. Many of you have sold far more than that. Thanks for your effort and desire to help the league be financially solid.

DEADLINE EXTENDED – In light of everyone not getting the coupon booklets, we’ve extended our deadline to turn in everything (money and unsold booklets) to Saturday, March 14 (the original deadline was March 7). You may also turn in your money to Ed before then at Satterfield or to your team mom. Ed will be at Satterfield on Tuesday and Friday night of this coming week (6 pm) and next Saturday from 9 to 10 am and 12 to 1 pm (he has practice with a softball team from 10 to noon). He will also be there on Saturday, March 14, from 9 to 10 am and 12 to 1 pm. You can make other arrangements with him to get him your money or booklets if those times don’t work. However, any sales after March 14 that are turned in will not be counted toward our drawing eligibility. We simply MUST have a deadline for that.

Bulldog Sporting Goods Offers – I had originally given you information that Bulldog Sporting Goods was offering AILL a 20% discount on all baseball related equipment and clothing. However, due to higher operating costs for them (shipping, etc.), they need to reduce this amount to 15%. Also, they have given the league a $8.95 plus tax price for a belt and one pair of colored socks combination. You’ll be getting information soon about the color of your team’s uniforms so you can purchase the socks and belt at that point.

Thanks for helping make A.I.L.L. a great league!!

    February 24, 2009

Dear Athens International parents and guardians,

Many of you have had your first gathering meeting or first practice. Some of you are still waiting for that to happen with your team. We are still trying to nail down a t-ball coach (there is great hope for that to happen) and a couple other helpers. Thanks to everyone who has stepped in to volunteer.

Coupon books – many of you are doing a great job of selling those coupon books! Keep it up! I know some of you have come back to get more. They are really easy to sell and we need EVERYONE in the league to participate in order to help us be financially sound. If you haven’t picked up your books yet, you can do that tomorrow (Tuesday) night at 6 pm at Satterfield Park. Ed Siemion, who many of you met explaining the coupon books during registration, will be either near or in the concession stand for you to get your books or to pick up more books.

Practice schedules – Coaches should have received a practice schedule for their time at Satterfield. However, don’t feel you need to practice only during the times scheduled. If an earlier time in the day is better for you, pick a school playground or another park to practice. Also the senior and junior fields are available and can often accommodate a couple of teams.

Team parent – Kesha Edmonds is our team parent coordinator. Each team will need to have one person as their point person to take this role. Please email Kesha at team_mom@bellsouth.net if you would like to help out in this way.

Thanks for helping make the league run smoothly.

    2009 Little League Volunteer Application

The 2009 Little League Volunteer Application can be found here.

We have completed signups, held our parents’ meeting, and the teams have been posted. However, there are still are places to volunteer. Below are some ways that you can help out the league. Please jump in and help out.

    TEAM MOMS NEEDED!!

Parents if you are interested in being Team Mom for your child's team, please contact Tekesha Edmonds at team_mom@bellsouth.net.

    COACHES

We still need a manager for one T-Ball team (Nancy Flowers & Co.). Also, some of the managers will probably need help with their team, so if you would like to coach ask your kids’ manager if they need a hand. As was mentioned at the parents meeting, everyone who works on the field with the kids needs to fill out a volunteer application. One is posted in the “Forms” page, so click on the link, fill it out, print it, and turn it in to one of the officers.

    PARENTS’ MEETING
    February 17, 2009 - 06:30 PM

PARENTS’ MEETING – TUESDAY NIGHT, FEB. 17, AT 6:30 PM AT WHIT DAVIS ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Rosters are posted on this site. You can access them by clicking on the Division/League link to the left. Please let us know if we have accidentally left your child off of a roster. We’ve made a few changes of mistakes that we know we made.

Thanks for your patience and understanding.

    Dear AILL parents and guardians,

We had our first night of tryouts for 9 and 10 year olds last night. What great weather we are having right now to hold these tryouts. I know from firsthand experience we have had some cold nights during tryouts! Just a reminder that t-ball (5 & 6 yr olds) and coach pitch (7 & 8 yr olds) DO NOT have to tryout, nor do kids who played on a minor league team last year AND will play minors this year or a kid who played majors last year AND will play majors this year. Tryouts are ONLY for kids who are moving up this year to the minor leagues or major leagues. Also we have been asked if kids can “play up” a level. For instance, if you have an 8 year old that you believe has the ability to play minor league, or if you have a minor league player that you think could play in the majors (primarily 11-12 yr olds), then they may tryout; however, it is at the discretion of the executive board to determine if they can play at that level without being overwhelmed, discouraged, or injured.

Our next round of tryouts and sign ups are as follows:

    • Thursday, Feb. 12 – 6 to 7:30 – All kids who will be playing major leagues (11-12 yr olds or younger if you want to move up a level) for the first time this season
    • Saturday, Feb 14 – 10 to noon – Sign ups and tryouts for EVERYONE who has not been able to attend an earlier tryout. We’ll also be signing up kids in the younger ages and junior league baseball players (13 and up), although they don’t have to tryout. You can also sign up for softball at this time, but there are tryouts for some of the softball kids.

Please continue to tell your friends at school and neighbors about Little League and sign ups/tryouts. We still need several more kids at different levels to make another team. This will ensure that kids get more playing time.

Also don’t forget the mandatory parents’ meeting on Tuesday night, Feb. 11, at Whit Davis Elementary school at 6:30.

Dear Athens International Little League parents and guardians,

With the arrival of February, the start of the Little League season is another month closer. We have several things planned in February, so please read over the dates and the plans listed below. Also please note that since we started sign ups so much earlier this year, we are catching some folks off guard. Please tell your friends, neighbors, relatives, etc. that we are having sign ups, as we have room for plenty more kids.

Equipment: Bulldog Sporting Goods has been a partner with A.I.L.L. for many years. They are having a buy one and get one free sale on bats right now (there may be a few bats to which this doesn’t apply, so ask the salesperson about it). Also, if you tell them you are with A.I.L.L., ANY baseball related equipment that you purchase will be 20% off (the regular priced items – not sale items). This discount will be for the whole season. If you purchase from them, be sure to thank them for their support.

    Final Weekend for Signups

Dear Athens International Little League parents and guardians,

We’ve had a good start to signups, but there is still room for more boys and girls to play baseball or softball this spring at Satterfield Park. If you have not already signed up, remember that the last weekend for signups are this weekend. Below are the times.

    Saturday, Jan. 24 – 10 am to 2 pm

    Sunday, Jan. 25 – 2 pm to 4 pm.

If you know that you cannot make one of these signup times and you want your kid to play, PLEASE email me back and let me know. It helps us tremendously in planning how many teams and coaches we need if we don’t have a lot of late additions.

Speaking of managers and coaches, we also really need to know if you would like to manage or coach a team this year. There is a volunteer process that ALL volunteers have to go through that we need to get started. Below are those that we know are planning on coaching (whether it is to manage a team or just help out). If you don’t see your name and you are planning on helping, PLEASE let me know. Also, please fill out a volunteer form during signups. Let me know if you have already done this, but I don’t have you listed as well.

    • T-Ball - ???
    • Coach Pitch – Scott Shepherd, Vince Edmonds, Troy Morris, Sean Seay
    • Minor League – Randy Wood, Morris Flexnor, Jeff Summers
    • Major League – Brian Finnan, Leo Scott, Tommy Epps, Kelsey Davis, Ed Siemion, Buz Amason
    • Juniors – Tim Mattox
    • Softball – Mark Hallenbeck

Lastly, PLEASE let your kids’ friends and your neighbors know about AILL and signups. We desire to grow the league and offer many kids an opportunity to have fun and learn a great sport. Please email, call, or talk to them about our league and let them know about the signup times. Let me know if you have any questions.

    Board Meeting
    December 4, 2008 AILL Calendar

    Board Meeting
    Dear Athens Little League parents,

I just wanted to send a reminder that we will be having another board and parents meeting this Thursday night, 11/6, at 6:30 in the Whit Davis Elementary School Media Center (note this is a different school than we met in last time). Please try to make it if you can to help plan for the coming season. We'll want to make some decisions about dates (i.e. tryouts, sign ups, etc.) and discuss fundraisers and sponsorship as well as look at our finances. Please let me know if you have any questions. Hope to see you there.
