Cougars on a roll!
The Varsity Cougars volleyball team was on a roll the last 6 matches of the season. They came out on top in some hard fought games to win the matches. The girls have come together as a team and have really developed into a unit that trusts each other, and can bring each other up if someone is having a rough game. The support from the role players on the team has been wonderful this season. Hats off to the girls that come to practice day after day and may never see the court during match play. As a coach, you always want these girls that will never give up and give 100% every time they step on the court. Senior night was a highlight for our girls. They played hard and came from behind for the win!! Thank you to our Seniors who have put in so many hours in the gym to prepare for this season.
Varsity Cougars of the Week
The Cougar of the Week was a joint venture this week. We have two girls on our team that have come a long way from the beginning of the season in the area of communication and trust. They are great friends off the court, but needed to trust the other to be there on the court as well. Kelsey Wivell is our setter and has done a wonderful job in that position all year. Her back up is Kersti Moore. Kersti has a tough job reading when Kelsey can make it to the ball and when she needs help on the right side setting. This can be a very tough position to play, making sure that the set is taken if the setter plays defense.
Kelsey is a great setter that is very consistent for our hitters. She is also a primary passer on the team. She is in serve receive 90% of the time. This is a key job, along with setting. She touches the ball almost every play in which the ball comes over the net. She showed hustle and determination in the match against Boonsboro.
Kersti Moore is one of the hardest workers that I have coached. She comes prepared both physically and mentally to every practice. Kersti sets an example of what can happen if you work hard. She has becaome a team leader out on the court. Playing a utility type position never gets her name in the paper, but we recognize all of the hard work that she gives to this team, and Kersti--it is APPRECIATED!!!
Congratulations for being Cougars of the week.
1st Conference Win!!!!
On Thursday night was the first Conference Win for the Lady Cougars. They were playing a tough Boonsboro squad at home and came out victorious with a score of 3-1. THe Cougars were led by Sara Gartrell and Elise Manning in the kill department. Both athletes were a presence at the net. The Cougars lost the second game, but showed much character in their comeback in the third. The last three games on the schedule are in County rivalries. All should be fun to watch.
Don't forget Senior night is on Tuesday, October 28th against Linganore. All are welcome to cheer on our home team!!
Wreath Sales
Our volleyball teams have started their annual Wreath Sales fundraiser. WE are selling Holiday Wreaths at unbelievably LOW prices!! They are high quality wreaths and garland from the Minnesota forests. This has been a successful fundraiser for us in the past and we hope that it is a success again this year. The link is on the website, and if you would like to order, just email me or get with one of our players and place your order. The money can be given to the front office at Catoctin High School or mailed to the school. Thank you again for your support!! This is a major fundraiser to send our athletes to summer camps and improve our program.
Varsity Cougar of the week (Sept. 29-Oct.5th)
Ashley Beall was chosen as the Cougar of the Week for the South Carroll and Clear Spring matches. She was our leader in the attacks and kills column for both matches. Ashley is always one to work hard and want to do better as the match unfolds. Her defense was very strong against both hard hitting teams. She has confidence on the court and requires nothing but the best from her teammates. She is also a navigation expert!!! Ashley is the one to thank for getting us through State College and back to our hotel after the match!! Ashley is a great role model for our young Cougars. Congratulations to Ashley Beall for being our Cougar of the Week.
Busy Weeks!!
Over the last two weeks the Cougars have had a lot going on!!! The Varsity squad fell to a very strong Clear Spring team in a 5 set match on October 3rd. The Cougars played well, but failed to come through at the end of the match. Then, it was off to Penn State to cheer on the Nittany Lions. The girls were able to bond as a team and share some great memories together. Then, it was back to business when we returned to Catoctin. The Cougars took on Williamsport on their home court. It is always tough going over the mountain and battling such a wonderful volleyball tradition. The Cougars lost in 3 sets to the Williamsport team. The Cougars record is now at 5-5 and they are hungry for two wins this upcoming week.
Come out and support your team at home on Monday and Thursday nights.
Cougars fall to defending State Champs
The Cougars Varsity team had a hard fought match with the South Carroll Cavaliers. The Cavaliers came out with the 5 game win. The game scores were as follows: 25-23(SC) 25-23(Cat.) 25-18(Cat.) 27-25(SC) &15-13(SC). The cougars played tenacious defense and made the cavaliers scamper on many plays. The front line power of Sara Gartrell and Ashley Beall, along with the finesse play of Emily Snyder made the match very entertaining to watch. The cougars will have to bring their "A" game throughout the remainder of their schedule. They will play another salty opponent again this evening. Clear Spring will be at Catoctin for their first Conference battle.
Good Luck in Conference play!
Room Assignments
To find out your room assignments for the Penn State trip, check under Handouts.
Food Drive Mania!!!!
As coaches, we are so proud of our team!!! There has been a competition going on between Varsity and JV to see who could bring in the most canned goods to help the food pantry in Thurmont and Emmitsburg. Both teams participated and brought in MANY items. The giving attitude of these girls was unbelievable!!!! We had students spending their own hard earned cash on others. This is one of the joys of coaching--seeing kids learn to give to others with no reward except the feeling of helping someone in need!!! You are raising great people parents!!!
Great job to all who participated! We will have the results tomorrow at the end of the day as to who the winner is!!!
Cougar of the Week; Varsity
Colleen Heaton is a great Senior Leader for the Catoctin Cougar team. She is involved in several other activities besides volleyball, but always seems to find the time for our team. She played well in both wins this week, and is a role player even on the bench. Colleen has so many talents and always makes others feel like they are very important and a part of our team. Congratulations for your hard work!!!
Servathon

ALSO.
Canned food drive; don't forget to bring in canned food for the "miniature" competition between JV and Varsity!
This Week's Blog
So I decided to wait and write this blog today to see how our Wednesday game turned out, and it turned out to our benefit!
Recap: Last Thursday we played Tuscarora and we played extremely well. Everyone talked on the court and as it has been lately, we were meshing really well. We’ve learned how to pull through for those last couple of points. Monday we played at Century and we really came through. We have been very consistent with our playing and everything looks really great.
Tonight: We played an AMAZING game. Everything was going well. We didn’t let up and when we did (which wasn’t too often), we picked the pace back up and found our place ahead. Coach kept telling us how much potential we have and I can really see it. I think, correction: I know we will go very far this season. It’s been an amazing start. We really want to keep this streak going. Tomorrow we play at Frederick High School at 7:00 sharp! Come out and support the team!
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” - Eleanor Roosevelt
Century falls to the Cougars
Catoctin traveled into Carroll County last night to play at Century High School. The Cougars won the match 3-0. The scores of the match were: 25-19, 25-16, 25-21. The most exciting thing to see while coaching was intensity and focus. The Cougars were on top of their tipping game and in the right spot on defense. This in turn, helps with our offensive game. The Cougars kept their intensity througout the match. The confidence of the team is building and we are realizing our full potential. The Cougars record is 3-2. The Cougars host North Carroll on Wednesday and travel to Frederick High on Thursday. Come out and cheer on our team!!!
Varsity Cougar of the Week (Sept. 15-19)
Sara Gartrell was named player of the week for Sept. 15-19. She is a Sr. middle hitter for the Catoctin squad. She shows leadership ability on and off the court. Sara has played a key role in our program for the last three years. She led the team in blocking and kills for Walkersville and Tuscarora. Her hard work and dedication to the team and program are evident in her play. Congratulations Sara for achieving "Cougar of the week"!
Persistence gets the win
The cougars got our first longed victory last night against walkersville! This was our first home game and we knew coming into it, we had to win. Starting our season off against Winters Mill was a little bit of an offset since it was our very first game of the season and we lost. But that did not stop us from wanting that victory and doing everything we could at practices to work for it against walkersville. Our second game , we lost to middletown in a 3 to 1 match. We fought long and hard int that match. Every single player gave their all. Yet agian, this did not defeat the cougars. We kept our competitive mentality and we went for that win. And we got it!
Coming into that Walkersville game, we knew the winning streak they had been on, and we knew we had to step it up, this wasnt going to be just a walk in the park. They put up a good fight, walkersville really worked us that last game but we pulled through .
Our team is really pulling through for each other this year. We really mesh on and off the court, problems we have had in the past. This team definatley has the potential to go very far this season. i cant wait to see what this yaer brings to us !
Come support the Cougars on wednesday night at Tuscarora !
Our First Win!!
The first win of the Cougars season was against Walkersville, another Frederick County School. The Cougars came out blazing, leading the match and never looking back. The score of the first game was 25-6. THe second game was more of the same with the score of 25-7. The cougars were able to get some playing time for younger players in both the second and third games. The third game was entertaining, with a score of 25-20. Catoctin pulled through in the end!!! They showed true teamwork in the win.
The Cougars are away for their next match, which is against Tuscarora, another Frederick County rival.
Good Luck Ladies!!!!
Attention Parents!!!
We are looking for your help!!! We are in need of the following jobs for our home matches:
Linejudges-2 for jv game and 2 for varsity ($5.00/game)
Scorekeeper--someone to run the scoreboard; 1 needed for JV games and 1 for varsity
Concession stand--JV parents for varsity; Varsity for JV.
Please come and speak with Ms. Brashear, Ms. Hosey, or Teresa Snyder about these jobs.
Thanks again for all of your support throughout the season.
Phenomenal. . . at least for one game!
So let’s start out with the first game. In one word, we could describe this game as phenomenal.
Everyone was meshing extremely well and we played with a strategic purpose. Unfortunately we lost, be we kept fighting for those last couple points.
On the other hand, anything can change in the three minutes between games. I have yet to figure out what happened exactly but when people looked at our faces they could see that we had lost the will to win.
It’s just my honest opinion, but I think the team would agree that we could have played much better in the second game. Instead of working point for point, we worked ourselves into a big hole. We tried to climb back out but, sadly, we couldn’t bring the score back up.
Now, we reach the third game. The beginning of it felt like the second game, and the end of it felt like the first game. Don’t ask us what happened because I think that for each one of us we would have a different perspective.
It isn’t the individual mistakes that put people down; it’s when we don’t help each other out that we feel alone on the court.
Coach has made it very clear to us this year that we as a team are going to have to figure things out on our own. This pushes us to communicate with each other and to understand how to fix problems in quick situations. For our first game, against a tough team, I’m proud of the Lady Cougars. We have come so far in such a small time. There’s an abundance of positive things that we can take from tonight and add to on Thursday when we play Middletown. Even with a loss, we can still accept tonight as a great start to a confident season.
“The man who makes a success of an important venture never wails for the crowd. He strikes out for himself. It takes nerve, it takes a great lot of grit; but the man that succeeds has both. Anyone can fail. The public admires the man who has enough confidence in himself to take a chance. These chances are the main things after all. The man who tries to succeed must expect to be criticized. Nothing important was ever done but the greater number consulted previously doubted the possibility. Success is the accomplishment of that which most people think can't be done.”

TJ Scrimmage
Great Job Cougars!! The scrimmage was considered a success! As coaches, we have seen improvement throughout the last few weeks, and expect this to continue. Varsity has practice on Saturday from 9-Noon. Plan accordingly.
Successful 1st week
Both the JV and Varsity Volleyball teams had a successful first week of practice and scrimmages. The Varsity traveled to TJ High School for a scrimmage on Wednesday, and the JV and Varsity had their first road trip together on Saturday. Fun was had by all and both teams came away with a sense of accomplishment. We all learned much about each other and are off to a strong start for the season. The coaching staff was excited about what they saw and can't wait to see the improvement throughout the season.
Great job girls, and good luck on your first day of school tomorrow!!!

LAST CHANCE!!
Your last chance to play in a gym setting is today! Open gym will be held from 2-4pm in the Main Gym at Catoctin High. Hope to see you there.
Open Gyms
Girls--
There are two open gym times lined up before practice begins on August 16th. We have the gym on Wednesday (8/13) and Thursday (8/14)from 2pm-4pm @ the Main Gym. If you are planning on going out for the team, I would suggest attending. Hope to see you there.
Meet the Coach Night
Don't forget Meet the Coach Night on August 7th @7:00!!! Before the first tryout you must have your physical in hand ready to give to a coach. No excuses! If this is not available, you will not be trying out for the team. If you are injured, please come to practice. We will then give your tryout when you are cleared to play.
See you on August 7th!
Olympics!!!!
Make sure to catch the Beach Volleyball and the Hardcourt Olympic matches over the next two weeks!!
Some things to watch--focus on the setter and how she moves without the ball. Focus on your specific position; it give you insight to NOT watch the ball throughout the play and watch the player and how they move on the court. Have fun with the sport--see you in a few weeks!
Practice Begins in 2 weeks!!!
July 30, 2008
Girls--
I hope that you have been working out and playing ball over the summer months. Practice will be held from 8am-11am and 1pm-4pm on Saturday, August 16th. See the calendar for further practice times.
Looking forward to seeing you at tryouts!
Recruiting Tool
Ladies--
It was brought to my attention that there is a huge opportunity for you to get your hard work recorded and compared to other athletes all over the U.S. The Gettysburg YWCA is the first in the area to conduct a "combine" for local athletes. The coaches will record different agility and strength moves that will be recorded into a national database. The participants can then try to improve on their scores throughout the year. Most college coaches have access to the database and can check for overall athletic ability of their recruits. Check out the HANDOUTS section for more info.
Thanks!!
A huge Thank You to the players that assisted at the Cougar Volleyball Clinic on June 18th and 19th. Without you, the clinic would not have been a success!! The middle school girls really enjoyed themselves and I believe that this will help build our program for the future!
Successful Clinic
The Catoctin Volleyball program had two successful clinic dates with children in the 6th and 7th grade. The group reviewed the skills of passing, setting and hitting. They also worked hard during their serving session. The athletes had a great time and hope that more young student athletes will join them for the camps on June 18th and 19th. Hope to see you there!!!!
Quote for the Week
Competitive toughness is an acquired skill and not an inherited gift.--Chris Evert
Summer League
YMCA of Frederick is holding a summer league volleyball for all high school students. The dates will be on Friday nights (6-10) and/or Saturdays. Check later for more info.
Plyos, Strength and conditiong workouts
UPDATE: There are now workouts listed under the handout section of the website. Strength, plyos, and conditioning. There is flexibility with the workouts--meaning that the dates in which they are performed can be changed, but the workouts should be completed at one time.
We will also have to get the entries in for the Spirit of Gettysburg 5k. Please let me know ASAP if you plan on running the race. This could be a great team builder. Many of you have never competed in a road race; it is quite an experience to have, especially with your teammates!!!
Meeting!!!
May 19, 2008 - 02:20 PM
There will be a meeting for all potential volleyball players for the fall 2008 season. This meeting will be held in Ms. Hosey's room at 2:20 on Monday May 19th. BE there, or BE square!!!!
Hope to see you there.
