Habermann Selected for Arrowhead All-Star Game

NASHWAUK, Minn. -- Charlie Habermann has been selected to represent Proctor in the Arrowhead All-Star Game in Nashwauk at 7:00 p.m. on Tues., June 23. The game includes the top seniors from Section 7AA and 7A. The teams are divided by north and south sub-sections. A skills competition will be held prior to the game.
Habermann, a pitcher and shortstop, batted .317 for the Rails in 2009 and had a 3.34 ERA in five games started. He shattered his school record of 49 assists he set in 2007 with 66 in 2009. He was named to the All-Lake Superior Conference 2nd Team in both 2008 and 2009. He was added to Proctor Baseball's "Field of Dreams" hall of fame at the conclusion of his prep career.
The Padres: Proctor's Amateur Baseball Club
The Proctor Padres Baseball Club was established in 2007 to allow baseball players from Proctor and the surrounding area an opportunity to play the national pastime, to provide a summer hometown baseball experience for players from Proctor and the surrounding area who play baseball in college, and to promote amateur baseball in the western Lake Superior region. The Padres compete in the Upper 13 League of the Wisconsin Baseball Association.
The 2009 Padres will feature these former Rails: Anthony Bush ('94), Kyle Cotrell ('08), Scott Lustig ('06), Tim Nylund ('09), James Ostrander ('09), and Dan Solarz ('06). Current Rails playing for the Padres: Tyler Pionk and Ian Scherber.
Four Added to PHS "Field of Dreams"

PROCTOR -- Four members of the class of 2009 were added to the "Field of Dreams," a position-by-position hall of fame of PHS baseball players since 2000. The quartet comprised the all-sophomore starting infielders on opening day in 2007. All four were integral to the Rails' Section 7AA Playoffs Final Four appearance in 2007 and have been staples of the lineup in both 2008 and 2009.
Charlie Habermann was added to the list of shortstops. He was named to the All-Lake Superior Conference 2nd Team in 2008 and 2009, and he set PHS records in career games played (69), at bats (217), and assists (163). He batted .304 (66 for 217) in his career. He set the school's single-season record for assists with 49 in 2007, and broke his own record when he recorded 66 assists in 2009. He is the only player in PHS history to have three seasons with 40 or more assists.
First baseman Eric Makitalo recieved All-Lake Superior Conference Honorable Mention recognition in 2008. He set PHS records in career defensive chances (448) and put outs (392). He batted .241 (42 for 174) in his career, with a career-best .296 in 2008. His 84 career times on base (H+BB+HP) ranks 5th in school history.
Tim Nylund, a catcher, was named to the All-Lake Superior Conference 2nd Team in 2009. He finished his career with 183 put outs, which places him ninth on the PHS all-time list. Known for his cat-like defensive prowess and strong arm, Nylund batted .167 (22 for 132) in his career, with a career-best .200 in both 2007 and 2009. He had an on base percentage of .419 in 2009.
James Ostrander was added to the list of pitchers and second basemen. Ostrander recorded a 2.63 ERA in 45.1 innings pitched over two seasons. He was 2-4 with one save in his career. His 1.52 bases on balls per seven innings pitched (BB/7) in 2009 ranks second all-time in PHS history. He batted .266 (45 for 169) in his career, with a career-best .324 in 2008. His 78 career assists ranks eighth all-time in PHS history.

Two Rails Selected for All-Conference

DULUTH -- Two PHS seniors were selected to the 2nd Team of the All-Lake Superior Conference for 2009. Charlie Habermann, who was chosen for the same honor in 2008, and Tim Nylund were both selected by the conference for their efforts in the 2009 season. Habermann, a pitcher and shortstop, batted .317, had 20 hits in 20 games, posted a 4.25 ERA in 29.2 innings pitched, and set a PHS single-season record with 66 defensive assists in 2009. Nylund had a .936 fielding average as the Rails' catcher. He had an on-base percentage of .419 and his 23.7 base on balls percent (BB%) ranks 10th in school history.
Makitalo Sets Career Put Out Record

HERMANTOWN, Minn. -- Senior first baseman Eric Makitalo broke a 31-year-old PHS record by surpassing 1978 graduate Bill Kuzas for career put outs. Makitalo had tied the record on the last game of the regular season and recorded nine put outs in the Section 7AA Playoffs game at Hermantown to set the new standard. His 134 put outs in 2009 ranks sixth all-time in the school's single-season records. He totaled 139 put outs in 2007 and 119 in 2008, which rank fifth and ninth respectively. Kuzas set the single-season record of 159 put outs in 1978.
Makitalo started the season at seventh on the all-time career list with 258, and became just the third Rails player to surpass 300 career put outs earlier this season. Mark Kieren, a 1986 PHS graduate, recorded 323 from 1984-86. Makitalo surpassed Drew Scherber (280, '07), Dan Solarz (282, '06), Dan Norton (288, '81), Joe Gaboury (294, '77), Kieren and Kuzas this season.
Wojtysiak Named All-UMAC

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Kyle Wojtysiak was one of seven St. Scholastica players named to the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) first team. Wojtysiak, a senior at CSS and a 2005 PHS graduate, batted .275 (38 for 138) with 11 doubles and 25 RBIs. He led the team with 114 defensive assists and had a .938 fielding percentage. He has been the Saints' starting shortstop since his freshman year.
St. Scholastica (36-7) won one game and lost two in the NCAA Division III Midwest Region tournament in Oshkosh, Wis. They defeated St. Norbert 7-6 in 11 innings in the first round and fell to St. Thomas 8-4 and Wisconsin-Stevens Point 9-3.
St. Scholastica captured the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference tournament championship for the 13th consecutive year to advance to the NCAA post-season. The Saints captured their 13th consecutive UMAC regular season title with an 18-1 conference record.
Wojtysiak was the Saints' captain in 2009. He had a career .276 batting average (102 for 370) and a career .936 fielding percentage (30 errors in 470 chances) for the Saints. He was named All-UMAC honorable mention and All-UMAC academic in 2008.
Wojtysiak was a three-year starter for the Rails as a pitcher and shortstop. He was 6-2 with four saves in his career as a pitcher and he held PHS offensive records in career runs scored and hits. He is the reigning PHS leader in career at bats and doubles. He was a two-time All-Lake Superior Conference first team selection and was named to Proctor Baseball's "Field of Dreams" hall of fame following his prep career. He also played football and basketball for the Rails.
Habermann New PHS Assist King

PROCTOR -- Charlie Habermann became the PHS all-time record-holder for defensive assists on May 7, 2009, during the game against Cloquet. Habermann was one away from 1987 PHS graduate Mark Slattengren's record of 135 entering the game and he recorded three assists to surpass Slattengren. Through Friday's game, Habermann has 45 assists in 11 games, placing his career total at 142. The school record for assists in a season is 49, set by Habermann in 2007. He is on pace to record 77 assists in the 19-game 2009 regular season. He is the only player in school history to record 40 or more assists in three seasons.
Habermann became the third player in PHS history to record 100 career assists earlier this season. He has since surpassed two players who went on to stellar collegiate careers. Kyle Wojtysiak recorded 123 assists in his prep career. He graduated from PHS in 2005 and is a senior and team captain of the St. Scholastica Saints. He has started at shortstop for CSS since he was a freshman. Slattengren was the UMD team Rookie of the Year in 1989 and was team captain and MVP in 1992. He served as a PHS assistant coach in the 1990s.
