Best of the Best
April 3, 2009
The second annual, Best of the Best, is rapidly approaching.
"What is the Best of the Best?", you ask.
And I retort; "Where have you been?"
The Best of the Best is one vs one tournament, designed to help determine, for atleast a full calendar year, who the Best Damn Wiffle Player Period might be. The 2008 version of this instant classic was a great success, with Mike Lewis taking home the crown, and the money. Odds are, he will not repeat.
This One vs. One format will be played using the rules and regulations that we all know and love, however, there are several exceptions. The exceptions are as follows;
* 5 innings per game
* Hitting;
- Any batted ball that hits the outfield wall without hitting the ground, in fair territory, will be ruled a single (not a triple).
- Any batted ball that is not a homerun, or single, or foul ball will be an out.
- After hitting a homerun, the hitter must round the bases.
* Defense
- Go catch anything that moves.
The Monster Series
June 13, 2009
The Monster Series is the Kentucky Derby of Wiffle in the Mid-South. Do not be mistaken, as I do not believe this as fact because of the immaculate park grounds, or fantastic, extravagant hats, or even for the fact that some of the world's finest horses run during this tournament. No, The Monster Series is the first leg of the Wiffleball Triple Crown, with the second leg being Wifflestock, at Zinnies' East in September, and the final, and most renowned leg being the Tournament of Champions, held at Cantrell Park.
2009 will be the second coming of the Monster Series. The 2008 version was a great success, however, with all things new, there were some issues that were brought up for discussion. The first important issue was the amount of games played during the 'Monster Series' (disincluding games played during the Qualifying Tournament). A possible 21 games in a span of 24 hours seemed a bit harsh. The second important issue was the heat under which the Monster Series took place, as middle July was a burner.
All the voices have been heard, and there are new changes coming to the 2009 Monster Series. Odds are, something else will be screwed up...but we'll just make it better next year...
Qualifying Tournament
* 2 game round robin to determine the Qualifying Tournament seedings
- Seedings will be determined using the
following method;
1. Win/Loss
2. Head to Head
3. Margin
4. Runs Allowed
5. Runs Scored
* The round robin will be followed by a double elimination tournament.
* The teams whom are fortunate enough to reach the final 8, will qualify for the Monster Series, which will be held approximately around July 11-12.
**IF, AND ONLY IF, THE NUMBERS 8 AND 9 **
TEAMS ARE ELIMINATED AT THE SAME TIME,
A ONE GAME PLAYOFF WILL BE PLAYED ON
THE UNOCCUPIED FIELD DURING THE
CHAMPIONSHIP GAME, IN ORDER TO DETERMINE THE
** 8TH RANKED TEAM **
The Monster Series
* The first round of the single elimination tournament, will be played as a best-of-3 series, with the winners advancing to the semi-finals (final four), and the losers going home.
* The Semi-finals will also be played using a best-of-3 series, with the two winners advancing to the Monster Series finals, and again, the losers going home.
* The finals will be a best-of-5 series.
The entree fee for this tournament will be $25.00 per player, which will pay the player's entry fee into the tournament, and will also include the official, Monster Tournament T-shirt.
The overall champion will be rewarded with trophies and a cash prize, in which the value of the cash prize will be determined after the tournament sign-up cutoff has passed. Also, the team fortunate enough to conquer the Monster Series, will also have their team logo put on a banner and then placed on the outfield wall, on one of the two fields.
