Nylund on Cardinals Squad

HIBBING, Minn. -- Tim Nylund, a 2009 PHS graduate, has joined the baseball team at Hibbing Community College. Nylund was a three-year starter for the Rails, and he was named All-Lake Superior Conference Second Team in his senior year. He has played American Legion for the West Duluth Cubs and amateur baseball for the Proctor Padres since the team's inception in 2007.
 
Nylund, a catcher, was selected to Proctor Baseball's "Field of Dreams" Hall of Fame following his prep career. He finished tied for second in PHS history with nine career sacrifices; tied for third with seven career hit by pitch; tied for ninth with 27 career bases on balls, and is 10th in career BB% (17.0). He also is ninth with 183 career put outs.
 
He is the first PHS player to play for HCC since a pair of 2004 graduates, Jesse Frick and Dustin Wiita.

WOJTYSIAK NAMED BASEBALL HEAD COACH

PROCTOR -- A Proctor graduate, a four-year starter and senior captain for the College of St. Scholastica team has been named head coach of the Rails baseball team, a position previously held by Tim Rohweder.
 
Kyle Wojtysiak was picked for the position from among six applicants. The Board of Education approved the recommendation of the search committee. The appointment became effective November 4.
 
"Kyle will do an outstanding job," Activities Director Rory Johnson said. "His knowledge and professionalism are outstanding."
 
Wojtysiak, a shortstop, averaged .275 during the 2009 season. He is credited with 42 runs, one home run and 25 RBIs. He was ranked third in runs scored and third in walks, with 25.
 
He was tied for second in six categories:
  • Hit by pitch -- 8
  • Plate appearances -- 173
  • At bats -- 138
  • Games played -- 41
  • Games started -- 41
  • Fielding double plays -- 17
Wojtysiak led the team in two categories: strikeouts (24) and errors (11).
 
Wojtysiak is an insurance agent in the family business, Reliable Insurance Agency.

Proctor goes 1-2 at VFW tourney

The Proctor VFW baseball team was eliminated from the state VFW tournament Friday after going 1-2 in St. Cloud.
 
Proctor lost its first game on Thursday to Austin 12-2, but rebounded Thursday night to defeat Marshall 8-3. Proctor was paced by pitcher Jake Lewis and Ryan McCarthy, who had a three-run home run. On Friday, the team fell to Bemidji 1-0, despite a standout pitching performance from Alex Oachs.

VFW Team Wins District Playoffs
DULUTH -- Proctor's VFW baseball team (ages 16 and under) defeated Grand Rapids 1-0 on Tues. at Ordean Field for the District Championship and will advance to the State Tournament.  Jake Lewis pitched the complete game shutout.  Proctor was undefeated in Sub-District and District play until the championship round.  Grand Rapids won by a 4-2 score on Monday to force the final game in the double-elimination tournament.
 
THE 55th ANNUAL DEPARTMENT JUNIOR BASEBALL TOURNAMENT WILL BE PLAYED IN ST. CLOUD ON THURSDAY, FRIDAY, SATURDAY AND SUNDAY AUGUST 6, 7, 8, 9, 2009.
 
The VFW team will play an exhibition game against the Proctor Padres amateur team on Fri., July 31 at 7:00 p.m. at Terry Egerdahl Memorial Field.
