The Sturgeon begin their final quest for the 2009 NEW MSBL championship this evening when they play host to the Kaukauna Islanders at 7:00 pm at Bayougeon Field in Kaukauna.  This year the championship will be decided by a best of 3 series. 

 

The championship series pitts the North Division Champion Sturgeon (19-1) against the South Division Champion Islanders (14-6).  This year's title will go to the first ever 2 time champion, as the Sturgeon won the title in 2007, and the Islanders won it in 2008. 

 

The Sturgeon hold a lifetime 2-2 record against the Islanders, going 1-2 last year including playoffs, and winning the only meeting between the teams so far this year.

 

We look forward to seeing all the Sturgeon supporters out at the games this weekend.  Dress warmly, as we are now playing October Baseball.

The Sturgeon won the North Division title today with a convincing 6-0 victory over the Ashwaubenon A's.  Mike Coady pitched a complete game, and the Sturgeon put pressure offensively on the A's throughout the game.

 

This victory puts the Sturgeon at a 19-1 season record and places them in the NEW MSBL league championship series against the South Division champion Kaukauna Islanders.

 

A best of 3 series will be played next weekend, with game 1 Saturday at 7:00 pm.  All 3 games will be played at Bayorgeon Field in Kaukauna.  Game 2 will be Sunday at 2:30, and game 3 if necessary at 6:00 pm.

The Sturgeon won their opening round game Friday night by defeating the Kewaunee Eagles 24-7 in 7 innings.  Every starter had at least one hit, and Mike Coady went 5/5 hitting for the cycle, finishing his night with a Grand Slam in the 6th inning. 

 

Round 2 pitted the Sturgeon against the Ashwaubenon A's, who defeated the Green Bay Wicked 12-4 Friday night.

 

The Sturgeon got off to a fast start scoring 3 in the bottom of the first, and never looked back as they finished off the night with an 11-1 win in 8 innings. 

 

As a result, the Sturgeon remain in the winner's bracket, and have a bye this coming Friday.  The loser's bracket game Friday night for the North Division will see the Kewaunee Eagles, who defeated the Wicked earlier today, play the Ashwaubenon A's for the right to face the Sturgeon on Saturday. 

 

Game time next Saturday is at 2:00 at Memorial park in Kewaunee for game 1.  If the representative from the loser's bracket wins game 1, then there will be a second deciding game right after.  If the Sturgeon win Game 1 they will be the North Division champions and represent the north division in a best of 3 series against the South Division champions the following weekend.
