The 2020 Football Season is on!

On July 20th, Governor Murphy gave the go ahead for youth football to proceed this fall. The Tri-County Youth Football league, in which Wanaque is a member has decided to try to get the season in as scheduled. We have spent the last few months putting together a very comprehensive and thorough return to play protocol. The protocol is attached to this email. Further, we have met with Wanaque Recreation and we all agreed that it would be better to start sooner than later. Recreation has seen our plan and has approved these protocols.

Registration numbers are quite low. This is NOT the case throughout the league as several towns have record numbers of sign ups. Currently we have 21 Seniors, 12 Juniors, 9 Pee Wees (not ONE single fourth grader is signed up) and 9 Flex. Clearly we need more players. We need 14 kids to enter a team in the league (11 on Flex). We understand that there may be concerns about playing this year due to COVID. We will do everything we can to make things as safe as they can be for everyone involved. We will make face shields available for all players. This will be up to each family as to whether they choose to wear them or not.

If we are unable to field teams it is unclear if the kids can play in Ringwood. Covid has certainly changed the landscape and the Ringwood recreation department has NOT made a decision as to whether they will accept our kids. Further, the league that Ringwood plays in WILL be delayed. As a side note, we will be accepting Ringwood kids for our flag program.

If you signed up but have not paid we ask that you finish the registration process as soon as you can. If you know of anyone who is interested in playing please urge them to sign up as soon as possible.

We will be starting practice the week of August 10th. Our intention is to give out equipment on Sunday, August 9th BY APPOINTMENT. We have to limit the number of people at the field at any given time. There will be other opportunities through out the week to get equipment.

If you are going out of state on vacation to one of the restricted states, your child will have to quarantine for two weeks before being allowed to practice or play.

The season is scheduled to begin on September 12th. Scrimmages will be limited to the towns in our league. Our goal is to get the kids on the field and interacting with each other again in a SAFE way. All nine towns share this vision and we are very unified in creating a good atmosphere for the kids.

If you have any questions, please free to reach out to me via email or text (973-617-7003).

Sincerely,

Gregg DePhillips

We hope everyone is healthy and safe.  While we await guidelines to be set by the state and town regarding youth sports, Wanaque Football (and our league) is preparing for the upcoming season.  Please know that we put your child’s health and safety above all else – so in addition to strictly following whatever guidelines are set by the state/town, we will be taking extra precautions to ensure that your child can participate in the safest way possible.

As part of our preparation, we must soon submit our squad projections to the league.  With that, we have some updates to the registration process:

Honor our Scholar Athletes!

Although they were already recognized at their Awards Lunch, we want to take this a bit further.  Last season's scholar athletes will be recognized by the Mayor at the next Mayor and Council Meeting at Borough Hall!

The meeting is March 9th and starts at 7PM at Borough Hall (upstairs).  Please arrive by 6:50 so they can start the meeting on time.  Mayor Mahler will announce the boys and each will receive a certificate.  Please have the boys wear some Warrior gear.
