The program will have eleven young men from last year's seniors playing college basketball this winter. Evan Lerner (Salve Regina), Jeremy Bacon (Worcester State), Matt Mobley (CCSU), Joe Atkinson (Clark), Connor Costello (Hobart), Ryan Ballou (Worcester State), Chris Murray (Bentley), David Mercier (Clark), Josh Evans (Norwich), Grant Brown (Norwich) and Andrew Baron (Umass - Dartmouth). These players were all terrific young men to work with and We are sure will have very successful college careers.

This brings the total to 19 Chaos players in the last three years that have moved on to play college basketball. Very Proud!!!

Chaos players make splash at NERR's New England Hoop Festival

Many of our Chaos  players were noted for their play at this weekends NERR New England Hoop Festival in Hampton, NH. Below you will find NERR's links and player notes on the event.

SATURDAY:

             http://www.newenglandrecruitingreport.com/news/article/3303/Big-Men-Shine-on-Day-1-of-NEHF.php

Nick Pasquale (BV Chaos)- The big man has a wide rebounding range and is quick off his feet to grab boards in his area.  Playing against a zone, he is quick to receive the ball in the high post and look for the open shooter on the opposite side of the court.  Defensively, he intimidates opponents into taking rushed shots because of his length and closing speed.

Kevin Durkin (BV Chaos)- Durkin is a skilled big man who has a bright future.  He ran the baseline against the opponent's zone, and was efficient in catching, locating, and scoring.  He is also solid on the boards, forming a 1-2 inside punch with Pasquale that is hard to stop on the AAU circuit.

Luke Cowen (BV Chaos)- The guard has a smooth, easy-flowing shot that allowed him to connect on several treys during the Chaos' game on Saturday.  With shooters at a premium, Cowen has a skill that will translate well to the next level.

Trevor Kovac (BV Chaos)- Playing for the 10th grade VB Chaos squad, Kovac is an efficient guard who plays at his pace; he does not get sped up by the opposition.  He has a nice jumpshot, and the lefty was good at setting up his teammates for open shots.

SUNDAY:

        http://www.newenglandrecruitingreport.com/news/article/3306/Prospects-Discovered-at-NEHF.php

Drew Vittum (BV Chaos)- Vittum is a 6'5 player with great hands.  He takes what the defense gives him, and makes the correct move.  He does not try to force anything, whether it be a pass when there is no passing lane, or a penetration when there is no room in the lane to drive.  Vittum is a very smart player who should make St. John's of Shrewsbury very happy this season.

Kevin Durkin (BV Chaos)- For the second consecutive day, Durkin impressed.  He was able to get to the foul line more frequently today.  He was active defensively and strong on the boards, as well.  With Pasquale in foul trouble for BV Chaos' first game of the day, Durkin was able to sustain success in the paint (on both ends of the court) for a big part of the game.

Nick Pasquale (BV Chaos)- Pasquale had the center court rocking with several thunderous dunks on Sunday afternoon.  He is smooth in going to the hoop, and is able to finish around the basket when he goes up strong.  While his offensive game is emerging, his work on the boards and on defense make him a very valuable player for his team.

Sean Sweeney (BV Chaos)- Sweeney finished through contact especially well on Sunday.  That, along with his tough defense, is a key factor in BV Chaos' success this weekend.  Successful programs do not consistently win without players like Sweeney.

Chaos U17 team has successful "Live" period

Coach Coffey's Junior team completed a very successful run during the recent NCAA "Live" period in July. The team attended events in NY, Springfield, Atlantic City and Philadelphia. Photos above and below include several team members on the boardwalk in AC and taking on a cheesesteak at Philly's famous Genos.

Playing against the top teams in the Northeast the boys competed very well finishing with a 9 - 7 record that included five one possession losses. Several different online publications noted our players and the team's style of play. They would include New England Recruiting Report, Hoopville and New England Hoop News among others. Ultimately our main goal for July was realized as the majority of our Junior roster has recieved college recruitment. Wonderful job by the coaches , players and parents!

Congrats to Chaos alumn Jesse Dykstra!

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- University of New England men's basketball player Jesse Dykstra (Douglas, Mass.) has been selected as the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Rookie of the Week for the period ending November 25. CCC Commissioner Gregg Kaye announced the weekly honors Monday morning (Nov. 26).

A first-year forward, Dykstra was named to the all-tournament team at UMass Boston's Harbor Invitational, behind his 14-point, 13-rebound performance in the consolation game -- UNE's first win (70-63) of the season over the College of St. Joseph. Over three games during the week, he averaged 10.0 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.3 blocks, and 1.3 steals.

Chaos Alumn Playing College Basketball

Former Chaos players Jake Ratcliffe (Worcester State), Scott Barrows (Clarkson), Dan Tessier (Westfield State), and Tyler Delorey (Anna Marie) as well as Jacek Louisville (Umass - Dartmouth), Paul Manning (Bridgewater State) and Jesse Dykstra (University of New England) are all looking forward to big winters as their college basketball seasons get under way. Unfortunately, Mac Roy (Eastern Connecticut) will miss his freshman year of basketball due to a knee injury he sustained on the second day of practice.

Best of luck guys from the Chaos family!

Good Weekend in Kingston!

Congrats to all the boys for a great weekend down at the Kingston Thunder Fall Showdown. All of our teams were extremely competetive. Hoop Mountain Fall Classic

Chaos' Juniors and Seniors attended the Hoop Mountain Fall Classic down at Mass Premier Courts in Manfield on Friday 9/23. The showcase was an opportunity for our high schoolers to play in front of over 70 college and prep school coaches. While everyone represented the program well, there were a few that stood out enough to be noted on New England Recruiting Reports article on the event.

http://www.newenglandrecruitingreport.com/news/article/2785/Hoop-Mountain-Fall-Classic-2014-Recap.php

http://www.newenglandrecruitingreport.com/news/article/2782/Hoop-Mountain-Fall-Classic-2013-Recap.php

Colin Richey, Choate(CT)- Richey showed why he is one of the better known point guard prospects in New England. He has continued to add upper body strength and some bounce in his jump, making himself a much more capable one-on-one scorer off the dribble. Defensively he showed a slight improvement, while on the other side of the ball he did a nice job of distributing to teammates.

Connor Brown, St. Peter-Marian(MA)- Like Bunting, Brown was a relative unknown going into the event, but he had several big games that warrant attention. He knocked down several long treys, stayed in the paint on defense to help his team rebound, and showed a little versatility with his scoring off the dribble.

Nick Pasquale, Shrewsbury(MA)- A legit 6’8 forward who was one of the best rebounders at the event, Pasquale initially stood out because of his nose for the ball. He got several tips and offensive rebounds, and because of his relentless attack on the glass, his teammates greatly benefited via second and third opportunity shots. His offensive game needs work, but he has the assertiveness that it takes to be a go-to scorer in the paint.

Richard Santos, Whitinsville Christian(MA)- Working out has certainly helped Santos, especially in his ability to get to the rim and score. He had several acrobatic finishes and some impressive no-look passes, but his standout quality as a point guard is his floor leadership.

Pete Weston, Choate (CT)- Weston can score in literally every way possible: he hits the outside or mid-range shot, can score off the dribble, and has a knack for scoring against other guards when he gets the opportunity to score on the post. He has a scrappy style of game defensively on the glass, almost always giving a play 100% effort.

Isaiah Nelsen, North Andover (MA)- Nelsen immediately stands out as a college prospect because of his versatility for a 6’6 forward. He can step out and hit the mid-range jumper, rebounds consistently, and has nice footwork down in the post. He’ll be a force this year for North Andover, especially if he can consistently produce in high quantities offensively.

Andy Baron, St. Bernard’s (MA)- Baron is another skilled big who excels when he plays aggressively. What he may not have in bounce, he makes up for in superb footwork and a seasoned understanding of how to use head fakes around the basket

BVC Juniors & Sophomores @ Hoop Mountain

Coach Coffey and Coach Costello had BVC Juniors and Sophomores down at Mass Premier for Hoop Mountain's Spring Classic exposure event. The event was held on Friday March 23 and many DII and DIII coaches were in attendance. This was a tune up event for what promises to be a big Spring and Summer for these young men.

While everyone had their moments, below you will find evaluations on the Chaos players that New England Recruiting Report highlighted in their event recap.

Sam WIllsey, Douglas (MA) 2014 -Willsey uses his big upper-body, bounce, and ability to change speeds to body opposing defenders and therefore get to the rim or make a mid-range jumper. Willsey has the talent to be a college guard, and his gradual development will be key in that regard.

Nick Pasquale, Shrewsbury (MA) 2014 -The 6’8 Pasquale is a player to keep an eye on over the next few years because of his skillset and advanced coordination for a player his size. Pasquale plays hard, rebounds consistently, and plays with a sense of urgency on the offensive end of the floor.

Tom Annan, St. Peter-Marian (MA) 2014 -Annan is another combo guard who, like Bullen, starred on his school’s JV squad this past season. He is a quick, creative player who likes to attack the rim and will continue to be more effective as he improves his outside jumper.

Colin Richey, Whitinsville Christian (MA) 2013 -Richey came out on Friday and gave another impressive performance by displaying an improved handle and floor leadership and also knocking down several outside jumpers

Mark DeVries is on a roll when it comes to records
By Steve Farley CORRESPONDENT

UXBRIDGE — In his season finale against Oxford, Mark DeVries only needed one point to break the single-season scoring record for the Whitin Middle School.

He got 22.

DeVries ended his two-year middle school career as the Whitin Middle School’s all-time leading scorer with 294 points, shattering the old mark set by Tony Barry two years ago. Barry, who transferred to Milford High, finished with 273 points.

“It was really cool,” said DeVries, a 5-foot-7-inch point guard who averaged an eye-popping 21 points in 14 games and broke the single-game record as well with 32 points. “My coach (John Raymond) told me I could beat the school record in our last game. I just like playing in the game. I’m always looking forward to when my next game is. I like making really good plays, and I like hearing the crowd cheer.”

Raymond, who has been coaching the boys’ middle school team for three seasons and is also the UHS varsity softball coach, couldn’t say enough positive things about DeVries.

“I had him for three years,” said Raymond, who pointed out that DeVries, an A student, was a ball boy/scorekeeper for the squad when he was in sixth grade. “He’s the nicest kid in the world. He’s a throwback. He’s a gym rat. He’s in the gym when practice is over. Sometimes, I have to chase him out of there. He listens. He wants to learn. He does all the little things, and he does them the right way. He sees the court very well. He’s just a super, super kid who will do anything to make his team better. He has a great work ethic, and he is a great role model.”

Uxbridge High School Athletic Director Mark Donahue has been guiding the boys’ varsity basketball team for 28 years. Donahue can’t wait to see what DeVries’ potential could be over the next four years.

“It’s quite an achievement breaking that record,” said Donahue, athletic director at UHS for 27 years. “There’s been quite a few players that have gone through the Whitin Middle School program. I’ve seen him play. This kid works really hard at his game. I’m really looking forward to him joining our program next year. I think he’s got the potential to have a great career at Uxbridge High School.”

Mark’s older brother, Jon, is a 6-foot small forward, who will be a junior next school year. With any luck, the siblings could be playing together for at least one year, maybe two.

“He’s another kid who really works hard,” Donahue said of Jon. “His game has really improved. He had a good sophomore year.”

Although he is a third baseman for the Whitin Middle School baseball team, basketball is clearly Mark DeVries’ favorite and best sport, whether it’s him playing or his idols.

“I enjoyed Little League, but I’d much rather play basketball,” said DeVries, who looks up to the Celtics “Big 3” of Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and the captain, Paul Pierce. “I watch it on television all the time. It always gets me more excited. … If I have a chance of playing college basketball, I will.”

Playing AAU basketball will certainly help him reach that goal.

DeVries plays for a 14-year-old AAU team called the Blackstone Chaos in the spring and fall, and to no one’s surprise, has been turning heads there, too. The Chaos is coached by Ken Paulhus of Blackstone.

The AAU season during the spring extends to the middle of May, but the Chaos players have already competed in three tournaments and have a winning record.

“The better the competition, the better he plays,” said Paulhus, who has coached DeVries for three years. “He plays even harder than he normally does. I’ve probably coached him in over 100 games. His attitude is as big as his talent. He’s fantastic. He’s the most coachable player I’ve ever had. His teammates all love him, too. He doesn’t want to come off the court for one second of the game."

Other players from Uxbridge on the Chaos include Jake Hession and Caleb Holt, while another local talent, Grant Brown, resides in Northbridge.

Paulhus said that DeVries was sensational in a recent game against the Rhode Island Hawks in the Middlesex Magic First Shot Tournament, pouring in 27 points in a losing effort. “He carried us,” said Paulhus, who has also coached against DeVries during the winter season. “I consider the Rhode Island Hawks one of the premier teams in New England.”

“I’ve always been very good at going to the left side,” DeVries said. “A lot of my points come off of lefty layups. Some of my points come off of threes. I like to shoot when I’m open, but I don’t like to force anything. I’d almost rather drive. I like to get my teammates some open shots, too.”

Junior Elite 75 - The Guards
April 14th, 2009
NewEnglandRecruitingReport.com

Guard play was the name of the game at New England’s Junior Elite 75 Showcase as it seemed there were outstanding playmakers everywhere you looked.

Demetri Lewis, Johnnie Vassar, Jonathan Joseph, Juwan Gooding, Aaron Calixte, Charles Correa, Justin McDonald, Colin Richey, and Cornelius Tyson all stood out as players who have the talent and potential to be stars down the road.

Lewis showed arguably better leadership ability than any other player as he was vocal with his teammates, constantly working, and tremendously unselfish. He’s also a uniquely talented playmaker with a terrific feel for the game.

Vassar is a super smooth and composed lead guard who can score with his patented pull-up jumper or by breaking his man down off the dribble. He’ll also make the defense pay for watching him as he has great floor vision and passing ability to match.

Joseph and Gooding were the top 6th graders at the event. Both are incredible and already complete packages offensively who can shoot it from deep, drive it to the rim, and finish against contact.

Calixte has all the physical tools with great athleticism, quickness, and a tremendous first step. His dribble penetration was the key to his success as he could create shots for himself and his teammates at virtually anytime.

Speaking of guys that can do it all offensively, Charles Correa certainly fits into that category as he is great with the ball in his hands showing a tight handle, a dependable jump shot, and a gear beyond most others.

McDonald and Richey are two guys that stood out from the competition by being exceptionally well schooled in the game, showing both a tremendous fundamental base and also fantastic basketball I.Q.’s.

Tyson is a big point guard and playmaking extraordinaire. He seemingly has eyes all around his head and can do things with the ball that most others his age wouldn’t even dream of.

And how about the play of Tyler Rowe, the little guy proved good things come in small packages as he dazzled the crowd with his prowess off the dribble.

Thoughts on Mental aspects pertaining to Basketball

On Personal Character and Attitude:

Reputation is what you are perceived to be; character is what you are (John Wooden).

The true athlete must have character, not be a character (John Wooden).

In life you make choices, and your choices make you (John Wooden).

You don't have to win a trophy to be a winner.

In basketball, there is no such thing as a perfect game. Don't get upset if you make a mistake or miss a shot, keep playing hard and things will work out. Remember, a man can fail many times, but he isn't a failure until he gives up. Always think "next play" (Coach K, Duke).
