Coaching Bio
Patrick Duffy returns for his 14th season as head baseball coach at The Avalon School, and his 20th season in coaching overall. During his tenure he has guided the Black Knights to 205 wins, five state championships, and three conference championships.
The baseball team's success has embodied the school's attitude, "Small School, Big Possibilities." True to form, Avalon baseball players land opportunities to play at all levels of college baseball. Avalon, which typically graduates two or three baseball players a year, has produced a professional pitcher (Kevin Fuqua ’07), and 16 college signings in the first nine classes (2007-2015). Additionally, one graduate received a walk-on invite to an Atlantic Coast Conference school, and others have pursued opportunities on college club teams.
In 2012, Duffy took the title of Commissioner of the Old Line Baseball Conference (OLBC), which he helped establish in 2007. He previously served as OLBC’s Head of Media Relations, and Webpage Facilitator. The Black Knights have either won or finished in 2nd place in six of the league's seven years. Several Avalon players have received All-OLBC awards, including Bennie Sanchez ’09 (Savannah College of Art and Design), Josh Brunvoll ’11 (Nyack College), and Niko Sanchez ’13 (Marymount University), and Billy Lennox ’14 (Frederick CC), who were all named conference Most Valuable Player in their senior year. In 2010, 2011, 2013, and 2014 the OLBC coaches unanimously voted Duffy OLBC Coach of the Year. He shared the honor with Jon Fritts of The Heights in 2015.
In addition to the baseball program, Coach Duffy has taught a variety of subjects to grades 1 through 12, including Upper School Journalism, Anatomy, Lower School Language Arts, Middle School Vocabulary, and Coaching/Leadership. He’s also served as Avalon’s Director of Athletics, and head of the Physical Education department. You can often times see Coach Duffy photographing Avalon events.
Outside of The Avalon School, Duffy is a realtor for R.K. Ashton Real Estate, and a coach for Dig In Baseball. For Dig In, Duffy has coached ages 13 through college level.
In 2012, Duffy coached Dig In Baseball’s 13 and under squad to three tournament championships. Then, in the summer of 2013, he took over Dig In Baseball’s summer collegiate squad and guided the team to it’s most impressive season which culminated with a loss in the Maryland Collegiate Baseball League championship game. His 13's went on to win the USSSA National Championship that year as well.
In 2016, Avalon's tradition of sending players to the next level continued as all six seniors made commitments to play college baseball. The Black Knights also advanced to the State Semifinals of the Maryland Private School Championships at the University of Maryland.
