During the course of this issue which began in September 2006 with the closure of the Lagoon ice rink, supposedly on a temporary basis for repairs, it became clear to me that the RDC had little, or no, intention of re-opening it. The decision taken at the meeting, on Tuesday, of the Community and Family Affairs Policy Board (Sub-Committee to the RDC) confirms my fears and puts the final nail in the coffin of any hope of seeing skating ice back in the town of Paisley for the foreseeable future.

It is a sad day for all the thousands of local people who took their enjoyment and recreation from ice sports, not least, all the hockey fans and players both senior and recreational. Paisley has always been a hockey town from a time long before the current local administration were in vogue. It is an absolute iniquity that such an iconic facility has been so frivolously withdrawn from the community!

The hockey clubs are fortunate that Capital Shopping Ltd have agreed to facilitate local ice sports clubs by putting ice down for the next four (4) years at their major events arena at Braehead. Let us hope that at the end of that period, agreements will be in place which will secure those ice facilities into the future.

Whilst the facilities at the Lagoon were ideal, I happen to think that, as an ice hockey venue, Braehead is just as good , if not better - The ice pad, benches, sin bins and dressing rooms are 1st class. The only draw back, as I see it, is that it is less predictable. However that is only to be expected - IT IS NOT AN ICE RINK, IT IS A MAJOR EVENTS ARENA! and at the moment...it's the only show in town!! and probably will be 'till someone decides to build another ice rink.

It's actually some of the committee of the defunct Paisley Ice Dance & Figure Skating Club (PIDFSC) that have started that website. All praise to their efforts but in light of the recent decisions taken by RDC and Renfrewshire Leisure, they are going to have a very steep unhill struggle!

lets try get some right good support on this sight guys.

its a good cause. breaheads a good rink/venue/areana, but the lagoon was an ice rink, lots of us learned to skate there and other sentimental shit.

Phil is absolutely right.

The Council have formally and categorically taken the official decision not to re-open the Lagoon ice pad as an ice rink. Furthermore, they have issued a contract to a firm of consultants to develop alternative uses for the lagoon ice arena, with the express instruction that provision of ice is not an option!
Ice users, including the Panthers, would be better advised to put their efforts into cultivating a sound, productive and lasting relationship with the establishment that is, currently, providing us with ice – BRAEHEAD ARENA!
