Men's Basketball: Combs Nominated for TSWA Coach of the Year Honors

Men's Basketball - Sun, Mar. 31, 2013

CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – After turning in one of the most impressive first-season head coaching jobs in school history, Martin Methodist head coach Scott Combs has been recognized by statewide reporters as one the best coaches in the state of Tennessee for the 2012-13 season.

Combs was one of five coaches nominated for the Tennessee Sportswriters Association Men's Coach of the Year award, the organization announced Sunday morning.

With the nomination, Combs joins a short list of coaches deemed by statewide press as the best in the state. Among the five nominations include University of Memphis head coach Josh Pastner, Middle Tennessee head coach Kermit Davis and Belmont University head coach Rick Byrd.

In his first season on the sideline, Combs led the RedHawks to an impressive 21-11 overall record, including a near-perfect 9-1 mark in TranSouth Athletic Conference play. Combs also led the RedHawks to a third straight NAIA national tournament berth, winning his first game in Kansas City before losing in the Round of 16 to the tournament's eventual runner-up.

Under Combs, the RedHawks ranked as one of the premier defensive teams in the NAIA, holding opponents to just 37.9 percent shooting from the floor – good enough to rank fourth in the nation. The RedHawks also finished the year as one of the NAIA's best rebounding clubs, ranking ninth in rebounding margin (6.750) per game.

The award is expected to be announced sometime in April.
