is the playoff schedule.

Playoff Rules:
a. League rules are in effect except in any play-off game. That game must go the full seven innings. The 8-run rule super-cedes this rule.

b. In season playoffs, the top-seeded team will be the home team, except in the final winner’s bracket game, where the undefeated team shall be the home team. The ‘if necessary’ game will be decided by a coin flip.

c. There will be a 20 minute grace period given to teams who cannot field a team due to conflicting players. This grace period is 20 minutes from the game start time, not the scheduled game time. Once the 20 minute grace period passes the shorthanded team will forfeit the game.

Also note: Games stopped due to rain must be completed.
A continuation will be necessary in the event of weather-related stoppage during a playoff game.

Only rostered players will be allowed to participate in the playoffs. Absolutely no pick-ups will be allowed under any circumstances.

2018 Standings

Abel Hardwood Takes Home D2 Gold
Game 1: Justin Carter vs Seth Seymour.  Goosebumps, electricity, excitement. Rumble in the pine jungle! This was a back and forth affair from start to finish. George Arlen entered the game late to try and keep Abel in it but Pine Heights held on for a 6-5 victory suddenly making the "if necessary game" an absolute necessity.

On to game 2...George Arlen was warmed up from a couple innings of work in game 1, and backed by Scott Britton's brilliant defense in CF he twirled a beauty. Geo would get some offensive help from Sam "BAM" Crotto who came to crush. Super Sam missed game 1, but stepped out of the phone booth just in time for game 2. There should have been WWE-style entrance music blasting through the pines as he made his from the parking lot to the 3rd base bench area. Slammin' Sammy said "screw it, I'll nail that" and nail it he did.  Meanwhile, the Pine Heights bench was a virtual who's who of GKMSA legends. Robert "Bundy" Goodell was keeping the book and once again the "Old Man of the Mound" was honorary 3B coach. With the lack of Pine Heighs scoring Mr. Goodell was able catch up on his beauty sleep in the top half of each inning while Mr. Rider's arms remained well rested in a crossed position the entire night at 3B. No Fairytale finish in this one for JP and his blue crew as they can turn their focus to 2019. Certainly nothing to be ashamed of. Congrats to Abel Hardwood!

'Twas the top half of the inning, JP and company donned helmets in place of hats.
T
he basepaths remained silent, just like the Pine Heights' bats.
Rider at 3B with arms overlapped, while Mr. Goodell, his pencil, and scorebook
settle in for their half-inning nap...

Honda of Keene takes down the top seed…
Fenton's little brothers had to win 2 games Monday night to grab the 8th and final playoff spot and they wasted no time showing that they belong. On a night when Keene Transmission’s BAC and OBP was expected to make headlines it was the defense of young Austin Capen in RC field that stole the show. The kid was a black hole where long fly balls went to die on this night. Back, and forth inning after inning. Keene Transmission’s Mike Hull showed off his wheels in the 5th as he stroked an opposite field line drive that got past LF Kevin Fisk and the Hull express rolled on through the night for an inside the park homer to take the lead. Honda’s Brad Blake said “Mike Hull can have fun with all that running, but chicks dig the long ball” and he opened up the top of the 6th with a bomb deep into the night to tie it back up at 10 and fired up the troops for a rally. Later in the inning Chad Sharkey came up with bases loaded, no outs and came through with an RBI single, Dan Blake then walked to push across another run, next batter rolls into a double play but it plates one more. Up steps Larry Gilmet who absolutely scorched a liner back at Timmy “gold glove” Goodnow to finally end the inning. However, after the dust settled Honda of Keene carried a 13-10 lead. Wouldn’t ya know Timmy Goodnow would have to lead off the bottom of the 6th with a double to right and later score on a Trevor Smith single? Now it's 13-11 Honda. On to the bottom of the 7th we go. Keene Transmission gets off to a rocky start with 2 quick outs on a fouled bunt attempt with 2 strikes, then a weak foul pop up to 1B. They manage to load the bases and the speedy leadoff hitter Riley Huntley drops a bunt that rolls back to pitcher who comes home with the throw to end it as Honda weathers the storm. 13-11 is your final. For any ladies looking to meet Brad “Long Ball” Blake you can find him at Durling this Saturday 8/25 at 3:00PM doin’ his bat thang. Keene Trans will look to keep their stellar season alive Friday 8/24. Anyway, was this long winded? Perhaps. Mostly factual? Fo shizzle.
Honda of Keene 13 - Keene Transmission 11

Yankee Lanes bowls over Pine Heights...
Lots of hits, some errors, some nice plays too, and lots of
arguing over the size of the batter's boxes. Pine Heights was graced by the presence of the "Old Man of the Mound" who served as honorary third base coach. This inspired the blue bombers for a few innings, but sadly life isn't a Disney movie and the magic eventually fades.  Now onto the other side, I expected the Yankee Lanes/Angry Orchard/ Liberty Mutual/C&S Classic uniforms to be more decorated than a NASCAR fire suit. Frankly, when you have this many sponsors you better be good. Anyway, they managed to score 1 run for each sponsor and in this instance that's pretty tough to beat even in softball. You can take JP’s team out of the winner’s bracket but you cannot swipe the smile from his face.
Yankee Lanes/Angry Orchard/Liberty Mutual/C&S Classic/Sunoco/Ford/Goodyear/Coca-Cola/NASCAR 13 – Pine Heights 8

Abel HardWOOD chops down Paquette & Sons FireWOOD…
WOOD bats, hard WOOD, and WOOD choppers. WOOD enthusiasts rejoice! Seems fitting the WOOD bat playoffs WOULD open up with a matchup that just implies so much love for WOOD, but don’t you think for one minute a single tree was hugged in this affair! Preseason favorites Paquette didn’t  have a blade sharp enough to cut down this HARDWOOD. Paquette scored 2 quick runs to start the party and then Abel turned the tables, and put the WOOD to the ole lumberjacks. Abel’s catcher Max Hulett aka “The Sheriff” gunned down would-be base thieves Jay Cray and Jeffrey Warner Jr.
Castor and company dip into unfamiliar territory (better known to us less successful softball folks as the loser’s bracket) where they wait to face the loser of Penuche’s vs Yankee Lanes. Abel HardWOOD moves on to play 2 seed Walier on Friday. Abel ended Walier’s “winning streak that never ends” earlier this year.  Softball drama is surely on the horizon.
Abel HardWOOD 9 – Paquette & Sons FireWOOD 2

Cheshire Med dissects C&S with surgical precision…
C&S offense flatlined and the back of their license says “DNR” so Cheshire Med gladly obliges. C&S heads to the playoff ER where they hope to save their season vs Chabott Oil. Cheshire Med moves on and prepares to send Marty and his Frazier furniture friends to the loser’s bracket on a stretcher.
Cheshire Medical 8 – C&S 0

Unfortunately time didn't allow me to get very far with roundups this year but here are the ones I had started and saved but never got back to. Not much here but worth putting out there just for the 2 major streaks that ended in the second week of the season.

Tuesday, May 1

Wednesday, May 2

This is the streak that never ends (insert needle scratching across a record sound effect)… It is finally over. Frowny faces follow. The Walier winning streak is dead at 23. Born on April 30, 2017 vs Frazier & Son at O’Neal – Died May 2, 2018 vs Abel Hardwood at Underwood. Neighbors reported hearing the faint sound of Taps coming from the Bedard’s backyard later that evening. Drop the flag to half staff and paint the lot black. Abel Hardwood 12 – Walier Chevrolet 4

Nanotech feels the STING in historic defeat…
Here’s to streaks coming to an end! Congratulations to StingRay Optics collecting their first ever GKMSA victory. Welcome to the win column gentlemen! Not only did they win, they decided to cut to celebration mode early in this one as they tested out the mercy rule as they annihilated Nanotech. The milestone victory was capped by a Chris Hinz homer to end the StingRay drought! StingRAy Optics 20 – Nanotech 10

Thursday, May 17

Winning, Willing and Abel, No Limp Lumber Here… Abel Hardwood 4 – Pine Heights 3

The Green Machine Hands Walier 3rd Straight Loss…
While I don’t expect 23 straight wins again I’m not sure I expect 23 straight losses either. The road ahead doesn’t get any easier with matchup vs Paquette on Wednesday. Penuche’s Ale House 3 – Walier Chevrolet 2

Old Heritage Farm 14 – Nanotech 12

2018 Week 1 Roundup

Opening week thoughts…
When I first saw the construction zone around the snack shack I thought “how neat, they are going with a castle theme for the new shack. There is a moat around it and everything.” Then I looked around and followed the rust marks up the chain link fence to find the damp cheeks of Dan Meattey clinging to the fence, and weeping as he peered in at the sad remains of what once was the maker of his Wheelock joy for countless summers. Dan, please turn that frown upside down. Sorry folks, there will be no grilled goods or permanent bathroom fixtures this summer.

Now for anyone offended by any remarks made here please let me know and I will probably remove them.  Apparently a few folks found some of my notes a bit too insensitive at times last year and this is truly intended to be harmless entertainment. Let’s have a little fun this year and best of luck to all of you in 2018. PLAY BALL!

Opening Night - Thursday 4/26

Davis Construction Hammers EngraveIt.Biz…
Legendary hurler Steve Burke took the mound for the crafty carvers and was absolutely NAILED by Chad Beede and his rugged renovators. EngraveIt.Biz was right in it until Davis busted out the 2X4s and decided to shutdown the job site early as they put the proverbial wood to the old chisel masters. Let’s slide back over to the EngraveIt.Biz sunny side for just a second. The silver lining here for studly Steve is that his knee held up for more than a couple innings to open the 2018 season. It’s all about keeping things in perspective and staying upright as well as positive. Moral victories are still victories even if they don't show up in the standings. Pitch on Steven son.
Davis Construction 23 – EngraveIt.Biz 15

2017 D5 Playoff Champs Totally Torch 2017 D5 Regular Season Champs…
Champ on champ violence is the way we like to kick off a season! Chabott Oil/Ciardelli Propane picked up right where they left off, and showed once again that cooking with gas is truly the way to go. This one was a little lopsided but Wesfield will look to bounce back versus Bundy and his pizza slingers on 5/2.
Chabott Oil/Ciardelli Propane 14 – Wesfield Construction 3

Country Flair Leaves Abel Hardwood Looking A Little Limp…
I took the easy route, I know. Lame? Perhaps. I’ll just leave it at that and let that one sit there to marinate. I’m not sure what else to say right now. It’s still early. Get off my back already!
Country Flair Lawncare 11 – Abel Hardwood 7

Athens Books A One Night Beatdown…
Bundy and company went full rockstar on Keene Courtyard by Marriott Thursday night. They groped the front desk clerk, ran up the room service tab and then busted out the bats to unleash a proper hotel thrashing that would do Keith Moon proud. The only tip they left housekeeping was a note that simply  read “You better bring a big ass broom” then they kicked the doorman on their way out. Bye bye deposit, HELLOOOO win column.
Athens Pizza 23 – Keene Courtyard by Marriott 10

Walier Chevrolet, The Dealer You Can Trust…
And the softball team you can lose to. Chevy runs deep, but this winning streak runs deeper. Riding a 21 game winning streak that began almost a year ago to the day (April 30, 2017 to be exact), the Walier winners jumped up 2 divisions and decided to run that streak to a double deuce. 22 wins in a row is really ridiculous. Take nothing away from Keene Chaos here as they took this one into extra innings. Next up Keene’s new kings of chaos face off with Yankee Lanes/Angry Orchard on 5/1. Walier will hit the lot in search of number 23 as they take on the new look Penuche’s Green Machine on 4/28. Side note… Keene Chaos brought back a familiar old face, welcome back Jamie Hinton!
Walier Chevrolet 7 – Keene Chaos 5

Lindy’s Diner Serves C&S the Blue Plate Special…
Lindy’s came out swinging some big ole spatulas and spanked C&S and handed them the check before they even had time to consider dessert. Young Vincent Cormier cooked up several putouts at 2B and threw in  a side of offense. Chris Hinz “57” pitched a gem and to quote Justin Wilson “didn’t let ‘em ketchup.“  Next up for Lindy’s is the pride of Gilsum, Keene Transmission. C&S faces Beeze Tees on Sunday.
Lindy's Diner 11 - C&S 1

Friday 4/27

Jon ‘n’ George Each Agree It Must Be Something In the Water…
J ‘n’ G 10 – E.A.I. 5

The Angry Apple Trees Pound the Pines, Bowl Over JP & Company…
Orchards vs Pines, it seems fitting that GKMSA welcomes these 2 teams to the wonderful world of wood. The Old Man of the Mound has left town and Mudville is sadder than the day it witnessed Casey’s mighty swing and miss. Yankee Lanes showed JP no sympathy regarding the loss of his senior slinger from ’17. Apples own the cones.
Yankee Lanes/Angry Orchard 6 – Pine Heights 2

Beeze Tees Say D.N.R., Cheshire Med Obliges, Declares Them  D.O.A…
Cheshire Medical 18 – Beeze Tees 3

Brick House Kicks the Crap Outta the Couches, Clearance Sale to Come…
Coach Marty will return to work Monday to not only deliver furniture but also the bad news that his dreams of a perfect 2018 campaign have been buried under a pile of tile. Fear not Frazier faithful, and fellow furniture folks alike, Captain Couch will rally the troops and have them SOFA king ready for JP Plumbing Monday night.
Brick House Tile 16 – Frazier & Son Furniture 8

Saturday 4/28

Old Heritage Buys the Farm…
Or did Greenwald Realty sell it? No matter how you slice it Greenwald took care of business, closed the deal, and brought home the W. Old Heritage will certainly rally the barnyard and come out ready to rake versus Benchwarmers on Tuesday 5/1. Greenwald hosts an open house with Nanotech Wednesday night.  Greenwald Realty 16 – Old Heritage Farm 7

Lumber Tops Tech…
Gimme some good ole fashioned timber and you keep your fancy technology! I just love me the smell of some fresh cut lumber in April. Anywho, I don’t know any of the particulars here so I’ll just assume the score sorta speaks for itself. Next up for Nanotech is the D5 buzzsaw that is Greenwald Realty. Hamshaw heads to the farm for what is sure to be a barnyard brawl with Old Heritage.
Hamshaw Lumber 17 – Nanotech 2

Paquette’s Chops Wood, Chews Pizza, Wins Games…
In case you haven’t already figured it out by now, Paquette is pretty darn good. I didn’t see a single second of this game and I don’t need to as I’ve seen this movie enough times to know how it begins and ends. Good pitching, solid defense, a couple of timely hits and would ya look at that…you just lost to Paquette. Ladies, these boys are more than just eye candy. They are the Travis Castor led camo clad softball winning ninjas.  Lola’s Pizzeria hopes to deliver a victory on Thursday when they try to handle the hardwood.  Paquette will look to cut down the Green Machine on Tuesday.
Paquette & Sons Firewood 4 – Lola’s Pizzeria 1

Princes of Darkness Defeat the Kings of Swing…
Good doesn’t always triumph over evil. Matt Black leader of Darkness Nation had his army of darkness ready to rumble. This was a lot more fun and light writing about the Party Rockers, but hell with it, I guess we’ll have to work with what they give us. The Devils best hope that isn’t holy water in the E.A.I.  test tubes when they meet on Monday. The Kings of Swing have a real project on their hands when they face Davis Construction on Monday.  Devils 11 – Kings of Swing 2

Pizza Powers Past Propane…
Looks like Jamie Garfield will no longer need to pay for heating fuel as he absolutely owns Chabott Oil. Jamie was hotter than a propane flame as he went 3-4 with 3 homers, the last of which ended the game early. Sweet sassy molassy! Next up for Bundy and company is a hotel renovation consultation with Wesfield on Wednesday.  Chabott will seek a season resuscitation as they head for Cheshire Med on Monday.  Athens Pizza 11 – Chabott Oil/Ciardelli Propane 2

No Shoes, No Shirt, No Coach, No Problem…
Reports indicate that EngraveIt.Biz got DOT BIZY with the bats early and scored 15 runs before the first out was recorded. OUCHIE! That is Just Gross. Travis Johnson got DOT BIZY on the mound for Team Chisel as he etched himself a beauty. Next up the EngraveIt.Biz whiz kids prepare for a trip to Hades when they battle the Devils on Thursday.  J ‘n’ G will get some needed rest before they take on Davis Construction Friday 5/4.

Johnson Family Welcomes Craigue & Sons to Keene…
Like any good host would, the Johnson Family Painting crew showed the new guys around Wheelock Park and in particular around the Durling basepaths.  The new kids in town looked pretty stout at times although Johnson’s certainly held their own through 3 innings only trailing 4-3 before the game slipped away. Next up for Nasty Nate is a trip to Troy for the ultimate softball family feud as the Johnson Family meets the Fenton Family on Friday.

Coach Cole In Total Control…
Well for 5 innings anyway. Then came the 6th inning as a 7-0 lead completely evaporated and we headed to the 7th inning in a 7-7 tie. Onto the 8th and Carlisle plates 3 runs (French, Eastman, and Haskins) and heads back to the field. Jim Judd allowed just 1 run to score in the bottom of the 8th before Zach Rokes turned in the defensive play of the day at 1B gloving a low line drive rocket and tagging 1B to double up the runner to end the nail biter in classic fashion. Cole and Carlisle meet Keene Monument on Friday 5/4 while Craigue & Sons get a break before they return to Keene on 5/10 for a double dip versus Fenton and then Carlisle once again.  Carlisle Wide Plank Floors 10 – Craigue & Sons 8 (8 inn)

Warm Benches and the Cold Bitter Sting of Defeat…
The only streak that stretches almost as far and wide as the Walier streak is one that heads in a more southerly direction on the spectrum. StingRay Optics has racked up 21 consecutive losses to begin their GKMSA softball journey. I am personally dying for the day that I can write about their 1st of many victories to come. Now I can truly relate as my softball life started out in similar fashion going 0-18 in my first year and 2-16 in the second year (the first of which was a forfeit “win”).  I’ve felt your pain, now WIN one damn it! In the meantime the Benchwarmers can breathe easy knowing they have dodged the bullet for now. StingRay gets a long break as they look to end the trend when they take on Nanotech on 5/7. The Benchwarmers will have their hands full when they visit the Presidential ranch better known as Old Heritage Farm on Tuesday.  Benchwarmers 16 – StingRay Optics 8

Walier makes it 23 in a row…
OK, stop me if you’ve heard this one before…Walier walks into Wheelock, and WINS. Yeah, we’ve all heard it. The Green Machine became the latest victim of the streak that never ends, yes it goes on and on my friend. Walier started winning, not knowing what it was, and they'll continue winning forever just because...This is the streak that never ends, yes it goes on and on my friend…You’ve heard the song and you  get the idea. Next up Penuche’s has the pleasure of meeting perennial D2 winning ninjas Paquette on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Abel Hardwood prepares to become victim number 24 on Wednesday night because...This is the streak that never ends, yes it goes on and on my friend. Walier started winning, not knowing what it was, and they'll continue winning forever just because...This is the streak that never ends, yes it goes on and on my friend… Walier Chevrolet 10 – Penuche’s Ale House 2
