Jordan awakes in time to pull away from South Gate

The Jordan High School football team learned a valuable lesson Friday: Practice makes perfect.

An admittedly subpar week of preparation resulted in the Bulldogs having a harder than expected time with visiting South Gate before prevailing, 33-14 in the Eastern League football game.

With a tougher opponent in South East looming, Jordan coach Sheron Butler hoped his team got the message.

“We had bad practice habits and it showed in this game,” he said. “You could see it and that’s my fault. I have to find a way to motivate them.”

The poor practices manifested themselves during a first half in which the Bulldogs lost three fumbles, two on kick returns, and were penalized numerous times (12 for 105 yards for the game).

“Those three fumbles were not like us and the penalties hurt us, too,” he said. “It was a matter of adjusting to game speed. That first half was a reality check.”

Jordan (5-2, 3-1), back in the thick of the league title race, used its superior speed to finally pull away from the Rams (2-5, 0-3).

Sophomore quarterback Justin Lewis (18-of-27 for 265 yards overcame a couple of interceptions to throw scoring passes of 37 yards to D’vante Smith and 28 yards to Robert McCovery.

Jakyle Cooper had one- and 21-yard TD runs and Abdul Castaneda added a 12-yard scoring run. Castaneda carried 10 times for 63 yards and caught three passes for 32 yards.

South Gate, which was limited to 99 yards of total offense, got a one-yard scoring run by Ernesto Torres that was set up by a Victor Ceballos interception late in the third quarter.

Emanuel Leyva (8-of-17 for 58 yards) threw a scoring pass late in the game for the Rams, who host Huntington Park in their next game.

Butler feels the Bulldogs will be better prepared for South East (5-2, 2-1) and its dangerous running back Robert Lewis.

The Jaguars are coming off a 14-7 win over Bell.

“South East is the sleeper of this league,” he said. “Robert Lewis is amazing, they’ve got a deep threat at wide receiver and a legitimate passing game to go with the running game. We’re going to be tested.”
