Player Safety
After yesterday’s tragic accident at the Ryan field in which a 9 year old boy was struck in the chest with a batted ball during a pick-up game of baseball, some of you may have questions or concerns about your child’s risk and safety as we enter our season. Please know that we at Charlestown Little League take safety very seriously and have measures in place to help protect our players, many of which are our own children too. Batting helmets, restricted flight balls, and Little League approved bats are among the standard measures that are taken. The type of injury that occurred yesterday is very rare; only 4 are reported annually in the US, out of 117,000 total injuries. In order for that type of injury to occur and cause cardiac arrest, the ball needs to be traveling at the right velocity, hit the right spot on the chest at the right moment in time in between heart beats. It is a very rare freak accident, and it is almost impossible to prevent. There are chest gards (Heart-Gard, and other brands) that pitchers and batters can wear under their jersey to help shield the heart from such an impact, but they are not guaranteed to protect the child against this injury. In one study, 37% of cases of this injury were actually wearing a heart shield at the time of the injury. Little League does not mandate that players wear a heart shield, but it is recommended. Athletic cups are mandated protective gear for catchers, and recommended for all male players. We are all devastated by yesterday’s accident and can’t help but think, “What if it were my son?” Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family, and we look forward to a safe and enjoyable season of baseball. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns about playing ball this year. – Cathy Reese, league President

The 2016 Championship Game between McCarthy Brothers and the Boy's and Girls Club.
The McCarthy Brothers and the Boy's and Girls Club teams battled it out for the 2016 championship just before the All Star break. The game was alot closer than the score would indicate. With both teams running lean squads of 9 players each it was back and forth with some very good pitching and great defense as well as some timely hitting. The final score was 9-3 with McCarthy Brothers coming out the victor. It was a great game to watch. Thanks to all the parents whom showed up to watch the final game.
Congratulations to the CHAD A's - 2016 AAA Champions! Congratulations to the CHAD A's and the Nnety Nine Red Sox for a very competitive Championship Series and to the coaches, players, and parents of the A's, Red Sox, Reds, and Cardinals for a very successful season!!
