I just wanted to thank the coaches on the Athletes cactus 8u team to show players and parents what bad sportsmanship I'd all about. We have a very inexperienced team that has not done well so far and they really did not need to hear the over reaction by there coaches. They are good and they just need to leave it at that. I can't wait until another team shows them when they get beat and they will get beat.

I'm sorry you feel that way. As a mother watching that game I saw a coach cheering for his son who had the last hit of the game. That child rarely gets a hit and his dad who happens to be a coach was excited for him. As us parents were sitting in the stands watching, we cheered on the Marlin players as they got up to bat. This is our 3rd season and believe me, we have been on inexperienced teams as well. As a mom, I just want my children to be having fun and learning something new when they are out playing! Also, to promote good sportsmanship as a life skill the head coach of the Athletics has his team say "Go Marlins" (or whatever team we are playing) at the end of each game wether we win or lose. I'm not here to get into a debate about sportsmanship, I just think it's important to know the full story before you pass judgement.

We don't have to get into a debate but this does not just come from me but also comes from coaches from other teams. Your team won ten to nothing and cheering the way these coaches did was still uncalled for. I heard it from many parents on the Marlins so I am not just being a sore loser or a sensitive parent. It would be different if it was from one or two. I have always been happy when my boy got a hit when it didn't happen much but I didn't act like that. These coaches might be the greatest guys in the world but our team scored one run in three games and it just seemed like a team shoving it in the face of seven and eight year olds when they are already down.

Bradley F.,

Hello sir, my name is Steven and I am the head coach of the Athletics. I was informed of your post by another coach. First, let me apologize and say I am sorry that you feel that our team are not good sports. I try my best to instill good sportsmanship into the players. I took from Rick Blemel (a 10 u coach last year) 3 rules that I discuss at every practice. 1. Have fun. 2. Play hard. 3. Respect. I certainly understand your frustration, especially if you feel that we have not held true to those rules. My teams have never started this well. I am very proud of the boys.

Secondly, while I certainly understand your frustration, I wish you would have approached me with your concern instead of posting your frustration and anger on a public forum. I would always welcome an open discussion about any concerns you may have. By discussing with me first, it allows me to address your concerns with my team.

Lastly, I respect your right to post your comments on this forum. I know you are aware that the coaches with DBBI are all volunteers and of course none of us are perfect. We do strive to improve. I encourage you to approach me Monday and introduce yourself and hopefully create an open dialogue so that I can hear your concerns and hopefully address any misperceptions you may have had about our celebration. You are correct in your assessment, that the A's will lose, I just hope we do it with the grace that the Marlins showed. Great job on your game with the Red Sox, and I wish you many more good games ahead.
