Author TOPIC: Loaded bats...

Whats the deal with loaded bats now a days in Victorville.. Seems like one of VV's own umpires is even selling them.
Its getting to be such a danger out there with them, and such a cheaters game anymore...
When is the Rec department going to do something about them?
Seems to me the umpires should stop selling beef jerky, and start checking these bats...

especially when the same guys that use the juiced bats seem to think its funny to purposely try to go up the middle. Glad to see that our softball community has such high morals. Many teams are even using illegal players to try an win games. Watch some games on Sunday and you will see a few players playing for more than one team in the same league.

You might have the natural power...but put a loaded bat in your hands and watch what happens.. your power gets even greater... and that is the greater chance that someone is going to get hurt out there. It's just not fun anymore playing against those that feel they have to cheat.

Yeah, I've never seen a team where ALL the players are power hitters. When the whole team is using the same bat, and the girls are hitting triples left and right, just as well as the guys, it makes it a bit obvious.

I want to comment on the same player thing--it seems that alot of the teams are having difficulty with players showing up--I feel if it's cool with the other team(and you're not pulling all star players from others)-what's the probelm!!?? I know that I just want to play regardless-this is just a lower division opinion.

Don't know about the rest of the teams, but our problem is having enough girls. Seems there are more than enough guys out there who want to play. According to the softball bylaws, a player may not play for more than one team on the same night. You also can't have more than 2 players on your team from a division higher than your own. I understand wanting to play. That's why we're all out here. To play and have a good time. But when a team has several players that play regularly on an upper division team, kinda takes the fun out of the game when the other team is getting the snot beat out of them. That's why there are divisions, to keep it fair.

I agree about the fun of the game being taken out by the loaded bats. I don't have a loaded bat...but then again I don't have $600 either. Let's play fair out there because I don't see how cheating at COMMUNITY SOFTBALL could be more pathetic. That's like cheating at Shuffle Board.

I'd like to make mention of a few certain teams in the Sunday Middle Division...just because you play against eachother does not mean you can't support one another verbally. The team we played Sunday was awesome they kicked our butts but it was an upbeat fun game. Next week...let's save the twinkies for after the game.

I am going to a Sports Summit Meeting in Cerritos on Thursay, one of the subjects is illegal bats. Hopefully we'll discover new ways to detect them. Also, we could offer alternatives, like woodbat leagues or city supplied bats league. I've brought these options up before but haven't received much response. Perhaps the cheaters have pushed enough people over the edge.

You know its one thing to have power hitters on your team but to have to CHEAT to win. Come on give me a break. If you where really here for the fun of it your wouldn't have a loaded bats or care if you won or lost. As far as players playing for different teams, I dont see a problem with it unless you play in different divisons. Thats where I see a problem. If we are all here for the fun and games they why do we have to CHEAT to win. Who cares wheather you win or lose. Are you having fun??? Thats the big question!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WHAT ABOUT ONLY ALLOWING A TEAM TO USE A LIMITED NUMBER OF BATS APPROVED BY THE UMP BEFORE THE GAME? OR YOU COULD BRING OUT THE "BEAN BAGS" AND LET TEAMS USE WHAT EVER BAT THEY WANT.

I do not have an illegal bat, but i do have a nice bat that I have been borrowing, that i love and has given me a new game, that's why I went out and bought my own and as a female I can hit doubles and am working on triples, shoot I'm going for the fences!!!! And also as a female infeilder you can't be afraid to make a stop infield by getting in front of it, via glove or body, whichever works best for you, but as an infielder it's part of your job to do your best to stop the balls. That are hit your way. I have bruises from taking balls off nasty bounces, but I ain't crying..

As a pitcher in the league and in tournaments on the weekends, nobody feels the pain more than people like me. It takes a special brand of idiot(like me) to pitch, especially at the tournament level. However it has become part of the game, going up the box. I will say this though, for the most part people in the VV leagues have been genuinely apologetic when they have come up the box. To me, I'm cool with it, it's a part of the game in the men's league. But what I have noticed is...

Where the men's players, and I'm not saying all of them, need to be hit upside the head is the number of so-called "men" in the lower co-ed leagues trying to take women's heads off that are playing the infield. I have played co-ed all across the country and I don't ever remember seeing as many "peas" being hit at women just so a guy can get a hit. Especially the experienced players and you know who you are who can place the ball. You are weak, to say the least if you can only find a recreational female softball player to hit the ball at. And the situation that it creates is that somebody's husband is going to seek retribution against one of yours, maybe even somebody you love. Me personally, one more of you fella's hit the ball like a rocket at any of my Friday night women and I feel it was intentional, I advise you to play the outfield or suit up with hockey equipment. Keep the "peas" in the men's league where they belong and let's just have a good time with co-ed. Besides, that league is basically our way of kissing up to the ladies isn't it?

Aint that the truth. Our whole right side is female and it happens all the time. Fortunately, we're pretty strong - no cry babies. I have no problem taking a hit or two by a ball, and have pulled off several line drives right at me. If it's a good hit with a fair bat, no problem. And it only takes a few outs for people to figure out hitting to that side isnt working. But they always have to try. Like I said, injury isnt that big of an issue for us, but for a recreational player who maybe isnt as aggressive, it's very possible.

Terribly sorry, but even if I had the option to use a loaded bat I will still choose not to. We in the middle division are not crying, but merely stating the obvious. I have been on the other end of the ball. I have been hit smack in the face and had to have my braces SERGICALLY removed from my cheek. I am lucky I didn't lose a tooth or worse. Now if that was caused by a loaded bat I don't know...I was busy lying on the ground bleeding. Either way, some of us girls are just not as BURLY as others. I have to be at work Monday morning, I'd rather not be killed by some inconsiderate male on Sunday.

I just dont understand the anger and justification given by the responses by yaya. It's merely an observation and discussion on loaded bats. It's not about hard hitters or weak players. It's about cheaters, and fair play. Creating a "lower lower" divison as you call it, to put ppl in who "can't handle" things just doesnt make sense. If people just played by the rules with legal equipment, that would be fine. Bottom line.

Simmer Gio......LOL
Must agree...If you need a loaded bat to hit a ball 300' VV Co-Ed is probably not the league for you....Everyone must keep in mind, there are some very powerful bats and individuals out there that are not loaded. If Gio feels like someone is hitting at someone on purpose then yes, he should say something and I will be the first to back him..And if he feels that individual is using a loaded bat then tell him to put it away and if it comes back out, then and only then should further action be taken. Co-Ed is and should be a good time for everyone. Coaches should be able to talk with other coaches to resolve any issues before, during and after any game...Just my .02..

Gio, re-read my posts. I don't know you nor have I ever played under your direction. You must have me confused with someone else when you refer to me playing "the last several season with my friends" since this is the FIRST season I've played in Viotorville. I come from down the hill where competition is steep and ppl play hard. I never referred to you, only to my observations on the field.

As this debate continues, and you read through a lot of these posts, I realize 1) there ARE loaded bats in this league, 2) majority of the players want to play fair, 3) and those that either use or sell loaded bats are getting upset that it is FINALLY being addressed...
My continued concern is the safety and fairness for everyone. That is all... I can shag a ball just as well as most, hit the ball pretty hard with my NON Loaded bat, but I haven't gone there... It was all about the loaded bat and the lack of sportmanship by those players that seem to have to cheat to get ahead. Its sad...

This is a good lively discussion. No one has completely crossed the line, but some are getting close (if you are still standing) just a reminder, no flame outs here! I think that everyone can make a point without calling someone names.

We will be making some adjustments to our upcoming leagues. Basically in lower leagues men should not be spending money on double walled bats. In fact, lower leagues are not even designed for players who can consistently hit homeruns. We will start keeping track of just who is hitting homeruns and make sure that they are in the right division.

We will offer the SCMAF categories:
Rec, E, and D divisions in place of our lower, middle and upper divisions.

I agree, I commend most of the people on this board for making this a discussion and for also using proper grammer so I can understand what is being said. I admit some of the terms and slang go over my head. (No Pun) I really hate to see FRICTION on the field. It really brings people's ability down. In my opinion, WI and T4TSC are the best teams we've played. They are exceptionally supportive to the other teams and are just out to have fun. I would really like to thank them for making this a positive experience. I would also like to thank my team mates. You guys are awesome. I have had so much fun joining your team. I SPENT 100 DOLLARS ON A MIZUNO ENVY AND CAN HIT A HOME RUN JUST AS WELL AS ANY OTHER HOMERUN HITTER. IN REC SOFTBALL WE DONT MEASURE DISTANCE, A HOME RUN IS A HOME RUN NO MATTER HOW FAR IT GOES.I ASKED AN UMPIRE TO CHECK A BAT FOR ME ON FRI. COED. A BLUR ADV. WHICH IS ILLEGAL. I love my team that i have and for our first season together were pretty good we win and lose but we always come out at the end winners we have a goodtime especially twinkie time anyways if u want to use loaded bats do it in a mens league not co-ed were the ladies can get hurt cause if one of my ladies get hurt do to a loaded bat i will get pretty ugly and mad i treat my team and care about my team like there my family so lets be adults and think SAFETY thats all......

Mounties1, you can easily resolve this if at the beginning of the season teams were to submit the bats for inspection. A list can then be made for each team and given to the managers and the umpire. If at anytime a bat is in question then it can be review. No other bat should be allowed after the season starts. I would imagine that everyone who takes the time to go out and play just wants to have fun. I would also think that as adults, we know what is illegal or not. Using illegal bats should have some repercussion as to being banned for the season. Maybe that would solve the problem.

This has turned out to be quite the debate/discussion. I want to reiterate that this was only started on the count of safety and fairness to those that play fair and want to have fun. There should be no loaded bats in ANY division if you ask me, and I agree on something really does need to be done to get these bats out of the City of Victorville.

Super discussion. As an umpire I'm fully aware that we have a list of banned bats. I keep this list with me at all times. Managers have come to me during a game to ask on a bat and I have banned some from the game. If a manager or player knows for sure that a player is using an illegal bat and said player gets a hit with that bat you know that is an appeal play. I will rule that batter is out and bat is thrown out of the game.
I can't check every bat teams bring. Perhaps what we could do is have a Victorville stamp we can place on the bat. This is something for Dave to think about.

Hey mountie, why not start a division with loaded bats only, and then add the hardest softballs you can find in addition to players only allowed to wearing metal spikes. Oh that would be so fun. You should also open a concession stand that sells loaded bats. Purchase a loaded bat, get a free bag of jerky!
I am personally greatfull just to play. Got a good collection of athletes and have learned over the years that the drama (bats) will never go away. Just got to deal with it like gas prices, "whatcha gonna do about it really" nada!
So, how about the loaded league?

Loaded bats and Beef Jerky league, that might catch on!

As far as the Victorville stamp. If we could make a stamp, I'm sure someone could copy it and we'd be back to square one, or even worse when a player with a legit bat couldn't get my stamp in time, but the ump would realise that and let them use it, and the other team would protest that they were using an illegal bat, even though they knew that the bat was actually OK, but just didn't get the stamp...

I am leaning toward letting up on restrictions in the upper league and tightening them in the lower leagues. I mean, really, if you are playing in a lower league, you should not be able to hit a homerun every night. Perhaps, you might hit one or two a season, but the other night two lower teams combined for 13 homeruns - Really. (There will be consequences)

However, I'd like to hear from some upper division pitchers before making major alterations.

going ya ya at eva dell is no major accomplishment. In fact it is much more difficult to make yourself not hit it over the fence. What is the measurement- 245? I could hit a softball that far in 6th grade. I can't even count how many homerun outs I have- and no, I have never used a loaded bat, but it doesn't hurt to be 6'6" and 270 pounds. There is definately no need for anyone to use a loaded bat at eva dell, unless your purposely trying to kill an infielder or pitcher.

As a woman, I don't like the loaded bat cuz then I hit it far enough for the guys behind the line in the outfield to catch it! Give me a base hit and I'm happy. I'll admit, I hate all the sh#@ talking, cuz I grew up being taught to show how good you are by the way you play, not how much crap you talk, but I also know things have changed, so I try to just keep my head clear, my mouth shut & play ... that's really all I want, to play softball. " HURDLE " cuz her attitude can go over your head as Jenn put it, and as I see it.. I can jump over it like a hurdle too... :) LOL

Jump over my attitude...What? You make as much sense as Donald Trump participating in Professional Wrestling. So I have your new nickname picked out... "huh?" What do you think it's short and simple!

Just to bring up an archaic post to see how much some of the posts of this nature have changed or not.

How about some non-trash talking, constructive posts in the future folks.....this board could be a good place of discussion. Most of the softball posts are disintegrating into trash talk sessions.

It seems like things haven't changed that much. Except being sans ya ya. It looks like he has some subs in training though......

Anyone who is all about softball might want to check out a bigger softball specific forum. There are a lot more people from all over the country online in this forum. You still get the smart aleck responses too, but there is also a lot of good softball related information being discussed there as well. If you have a question and learn how to post it correctly there, you can actually get a helpful answer a lot of the time. In case you are interested and need a bulletin board vacation...................

Wow, Hardlinedrives you did pull this out the archives. Most of these respondents, now do not even live in High Desert. I do get your point of pulling this one back out!

lol! Funny thing is, alot of the bantering towards the end is just good natured joking between team mates. Moose13, you remember that??!? Ahhhhhh....back in the day.
Tho I do get a kick out of revisting this site. It's VERY entertaining. The Rocky Mountains have a way of keeping the drama on the west coast.
