| Batting practice- very necessary if you want to be competitive in slowpitch. Defense is key, but let's face it, Slowpitch is an offensive game- some games with practiced players run the scores up in the 30's 40's and 50's. Many players find that their OBP goes up by about .200 to .300 points w/ consistent BP, plus it's fun to hit! If you want to play, Slowpitch Softball is a sport that you can develop the skill as an adult. Off the batting T, softtoss, live pitch, batting cage, it doesn't matter, just start getting some BP in on a regular basis.
Bat length- will be a standard 34" on all quality slowpitch bats. As long as you are practicing, you might try a 26 or 27 oz. so you can generate more bat speed. Oftentimes when people come in cold to play (w/o taking BP regularly) a heavier bat will swing more controlled for them, but if you are going to start practicing, pick up 1 quality SB bat that is 26 or 27 oz. and get comfortable with that bat. Virtually all of the power in slowpitch is generated from your swing (not the pitch) so the lighter, the better (to a point) as long as you can control it. 26 is generally the lightest bat a manufacturer specs in slowpitch, but I think Miken might have made the recoil in a slowpitch 25 oz. It's all about bat speed and consistency.
