Since only managers attend our meetings, I thought that I might pass along information about rainouts.

1. Fields are checked in person by multiple staff.
2. If the umpires feel that a field is unsafe for play, we don't play.
3. If a Rec staff feels that the fields are unsafe, we don't play.
4. If Parks staff says that they cannot prep a field due to poor condition, we don't play.

As soon as we know that the fields will not be ready for the first game of the day, we officially cancel games for the entire day.

Why do we cancel the entire day?

First, we can't keep officials on standby without paying them. If we need them to wait, then we would have to pay them for each game that they waited. Also, if we are going to make up a few games, we might as well make up all the games together. It's not fair to ask officials to come out to work for just one game.

There might be days when fields are unplayable at 9am and look pretty good at 4pm, but the Parks staff can't keep coming back to see if they can prep a field yet. During the weekdays, when there are not early scheduled games, we tend to wait longer to cancel games. On the weekends, we cancel as soon as we know the first games cannot be played.

Using this method works for everyone. When we are sure we are going to cancel we like to send out the news on Twitter so players, managers and officials will have more time to make alternative plans.

We don't take these decisions lightly. I have spent the night in my office to personally check fields first thing in the morning. Our goal is to always play when it is safe to do so.
