I love starting new leagues. We have tried everything from basketball to wiffleball. We have offered women only softball, men's 40+ softball, flag football, basketball, bocci ball and more. The one reality about the current budget situation is that if we put a sport down on paper, then we have to produce the revenue we said the sport would produce. In the past, expansion of other sports, mainly soccer, allowed us to offer new leagues in other sports. But now, if we have it budgeted, it has to go. Basketball and football were examples of programs that we not consistent. We would have 5 teams, 19 teams and zero teams. We can't budget for that. Football was similar, but had smaller numbers. Softball tournaments are in the same boat. We can't have things in the budget that might not go. So to get something going, we need to be confident that we'll have enough participants. What I've noticed is a small number of passionate people, that was always enough to try something, but in these times it is not.

Would the city then allow us as softball players to organize a softball tournamnet and allow use of the fields for the tournament. We could even use all of the proceeds to pay the umpires and the city for use of the fields. I am not one to organize one of these events, but would get a team together to play in one. Just a thought. I know alot of players that used to play in alot of tournaments and are looking for some closer to home.

Great idea if the insurance was'nt a factor. Is it still $500 up front just to ask for the fields? You could easily have two (2) tourneys a month to make money..

For softball, we are letting SCMAF run tournaments up here again. They will offer a SCMAF qualifier in the Fall.

Many of us up here play 20-25 tournaments a year and drive all over the state to play. Sometimes even out of state. We would love to have more than one or two local tournaments a year. If they are ran right the city would actually make money on them which could be rolled into other park & rec activities. Many of us have enough tournament experience that we would be willing to help. Keep our thousands of dollars that we spend on softball local.
