Brewers Hold The Tigers, Win The Championship, 9-5
The Brewers, with 13 players eligible for the Championship Game, faced the possibility of playing the Championship with only 9 guys, including their aged and wounded manager: Joe Pita was out of the country on family business; Mark Behn, injured in last week's playoff, was in a brace, on crutches, facing surgery in six weeks; Jay Gould was battling a recurring hamstring injury re-injured in last week's playoff game; and Mark Lenhoff had suffered a concussion from too many blows to the mask while catching and umpiring. But the wounded warriors rose to the occasion...Behn coaching at third, Gould going 2-2, plus a walk and a sac bunt, and Lenhoff having a perfect 3-3 day, plus getting on base on a hit-by-pitch.
The Brewers got contributions throughout the lineup, including two-hit games from Augie Alonso, Eric Cain, Jim Fier and Sam Kason.
But none of this would have been possible without Brewers ace, Greg Bertrand, 15-0 on the season and 1-0 in the playoffs. Bertrand, a true Cy Young and MVP performer, delivered his usual super mound magic, going all 9 innings, limiting a tough Tiger lineup to nine hits and one earned run.
The Brewers tip their cap to a determined Tiger team, which battled back all game, showing no quit at all.
