Red Sox get out early and hold on for the 'ship!
The Red Sox scored 4 runs in the first as Hussain was HBP, Whitaker walked, Lyman singled sharply to CF to drive in one and Velez walked to load the bases. The Squires brought in relief pitcher Anderson (who would end up pitching 8 innings), but the Red Sox kept it going as Needham hit a fly to RF which was dropped for a run, a fielder’s choice and a Granillo single produced another two, so after one inning of play; 4-0 Red Sox. The Sox got right after it again in the 3rd as Hussain again got it going with a walk and then he stole 2nd, after an out, an error put runners on 1st and 3rd Velez singled in a run, followed by an RBI double by Needham; then run producing singles by Garcia and Oliver made it a big 8-0 lead. The Red Sox added another in the 5th as Velez hit a long double to RF. Red Sox starter Eddie Urquiza was coasting along with a big lead hurling 5 scoreless innings.
The Squires tried to make a game of it, and ultimately would. In the 6th Tyler Monroe drove home a pair with booming double and scored later in the inning on a Red Sox error which made the score 9-3. Then in the 8th the Squires scored 1 run on a single by Casey and had the bases loaded with 2 outs. In came Red Sox lefty reliever Whitaker who induced a ground ball, but that grounder went through an infielder for an error and then was booted by an outfielder as 2 more runs scored, making it 9-6 Red Sox. In the 9th the Squires still would not go quietly as they loaded the bases before finally making the final and last out. Congrats to the Red Sox.
For the Sox, Mike Velez was a perfect 3-3 and Joe Lyman scored 3 runs.
