Cubs comeback to take the crown!
Although the Cubs only had 6 hits, they took advantage of 8 walks, 2 hit batters and 6 errors by the Squires. The key to the comeback were two 8th inning singles (Sheldon and Rountree) followed by a huge 2-run, 2-out tying single by Brian Perras. Then tied 6-6 in the 9th, the Cubs win it as Manente leads off by getting hit by the pitch, and then he is sacrificed to second base by Barboza. The Squires then issued an intentional walk to set up the potential inning ending double play ball. The Cubs complied by hitting a possible DP ball to SS, but the throw on the back-end of the DP went awry to score the winning run for the Cubs. An exciting walk off victory for the home team.
For the Cubs, relief pitcher Ryan Davis earned the win by shutting down the Squires over the last 4 frames, and the Cubs played flawless defense on the day.
The defensive play of the game came in the 8th inning, when [Cubs’ catcher] Rountree blocked 3 wild pitches in the dirt. The Squires had runners on 2nd and 3rd who would have easily scored with the long backstop, possibly putting the game out of reach.
For the Squires, starting pitcher Eric Anderson was wild (7 walks / 1 HBP), but effective, as he only allowed 4 earned runs and struck out 9. With the bats, Zach Brandt led the attack with a 3-hit day.
