Angels Capture Winter Federal Championship
In an unexpected turn, the third and fourth seated teams, the Angels and Condors met for the winter federal championship on a clear but chilly afternoon at valley college. The Condors struck first scoring 1 in the top of the first, which the Angels promptly matched in the bottom. The Condors got 2 more in the second as the Angels got one back to make it 3-2 Condors after 2. The Angels plated 1 in the bottom of the third to tie it, but the Condors came right back with 1 in the top of 4 to take the lead again. The Angels scored 3 in the bottom of the 4th to go up 6-4 and never looked back. The Condors did score 1 in the top of the fifth to make it tight again at 6-5 but the Angels bats came alive in the bottom of the fifth with 5 more enroute to an 11-0 run over the final half of the game to take away the drama and put it away.
Lee Ellis and Ryan Davis led the offense, both going 4-5, followed by Joe Shields and Jerry Aebi, each with 3 hits, Edwin Bonilla and Danny Carrillo, 2 each as every member of the potent Angels line up had at least 1 hit.
On the mound, Jess Whitehill went 7 for the win, giving up 5 runs (3 ER) and Carlos Rodriguez, Jerry Aebi and Gary Walsh combined to close it out with 2 scoreless frames. Long time labl player, manager and south bay coordinator Walsh, making his final labl appearance before moving to Tennessee, got the last out as the Angels rushed the mound to celebrate.
Congrats to the Condors in their first championship game. It was close for 5 and they should be proud of their accomplishments in this 2016 playoff run.
