Brewers Win Championship In Tenth Inning, 3-2
With Brewers' ace, Carlos Garcia, on the mound, the Islanders did all their scoring in the first inning on three singles and two Brewers errors. In the fourth inning, the Brewers got their first run off Islanders' ace, Tony Covarrubias, on Colin Havey's single, his stolen base and two ground outs. The Brewers tied the score at 2-2 in the sixth inning on Paul Potvin's single, his stolen base and Jim Fier's double.
The score remained tied through nine innings. In the top of the tenth inning, Albert Ojeda led off with a double, and after two outs, Havey (3 for 3 on the day) doubled in the Brewers' third run. In the bottom of the tenth, the Islanders got their leadoff hitter to first base on the Brewers' fourth error of the game. But the runner was thrown out stealing on a bullet from Brewers catcher, Scott Bailey. It was the third Islanders' runner Bailey nailed trying to steal.
Despite the Brewers' four errors, there were some fine defensive plays as well, highlighted by shortstop Havey going to the deep left field line to snag a popup and then firing to 2nd baseman, Luis Cruz, to double off the stunned runner.
On the mound, Garcia was outstanding, shutting out a monster Islanders lineup on four hits from the second inning through the tenth and final frame.
The Brewers tip their caps to an excellent Islanders team, who played errorless baseball, and we especially salute the always sterling pitching of Mr. Covarrubias.
