Sides big 8th inning hit leads Knocks to Championship!
The Saturday National championship game pitted the 1st place Hard Knocks and the 2nd place Brewers. On paper, a good game, and it did not disappoint. For the Knocks, starter Josue Iniguez hurled a strong 7 innings, allowing only 1 unearned run. And for the Brewers, starter Matt Stone was good as well, going 7+ innings.
The Knocks scored in the 1st as Evan Young singled, stole 2nd and scored on a Matt Kelsey single. The Brewers tied the game in the 3rd as Mario Villarreal singled, was sacrificed to 2nd, and scored on multiple Knocks errors. In the bottom of the 6th the Knocks took a 2-1 lead as Brandon Kaufman doubled in a run. The Brewers had a chance for a big inning in the top of the 7th as Christian Martinez singled, was sacrificed to 2nd, he then took 3rd on a single by Alex Quijano. Up came Matt Stone, who hit a grounder towards the shortstop, the SS fielded the ball, hesitated, then fired to 1st late, then Martinez broke for home and the throw from the firstbaseman hit the catcher, the tag, and Martinez was ruled out at the plate. The Brewers still had runners at 2nd & 3rd, but the next batter made out. The Brewers did tie the game at 2-2 in the top of the 8th as Armando Mesa singled, stole 2nd and came home on a Sam Wiley double. That brings us to the bottom of the 8th, with the score knotted at 2. The Hard Knocks' Kyle Convissar lead off with a walk and took 2nd on a single by Michael Fischbach. The Brewers decided to go with hard throwing reliever Scott Hong. He struck out a batter, then walked a batter, then struck out the next batter. Bases loaded, 2-outs, 2-strikes to Brandon Sides, who lined a single to RF to score the 2 go-ahead, game winning runs. Kaufman finished off the top of the 9th on the hill and held the Brewers in check to pick up the victory. Congrats to both teams on a well done season.
