The Playoff Bracket is here!! Good luck to all the teams!

January 15, 2020

Unfortunately, through two weekends of games this season there have already been twelve unsportsmanlike technical fouls. These fouls are across all divisions, boys, girls, varsity, JV, players and coaches.  That is an unacceptable number and has prompted action by the HS CYO board.  We have been told by the officials that if this is to continue we will no longer have referees assigned to high school CYO games.  That is not an empty threat, it will happen and it will end our season, they have done it to other organizations.

Effective immediately we are implementing the following at the High School CYO Level:

1) All unsportsmanlike technical fouls will now result in an automatic 1 week suspension that must include at least 1 CYO game. Previously this had been the penalty for third technical foul, but no longer.  Subsequent technical fouls will result in a 1 month suspension, including practices and games. Coaches receiving technical fouls cannot be reinstated until they have had a phone conversation with the CYO Director.

2) Before prayer at center court, at all games this weekend (January 18-19) a representative from the home team must read the attached sportsmanship letter out loud to all players and coaches reminding them of CYO's purpose and sportsmanship.  If you don't play this weekend then read it aloud before your your next game.

Letter from the CYO Director regarding sportmanship and purpose:

The primary purpose of CYO basketball is to provide opportunities for youth to grow in faith and understanding of their Church through involvement in parish and diocesan life. Secondarily, the purpose is to teach young men and women the fundamentals of basketball, including good sportsmanship, healthy competition, and cooperative team play.

With the spirit of sportsmanship in mind I want to remind everyone, players & coaches, to respect the officials and their decisions.  Whether you agree with them or not, you are not to argue or be disrespectful in any way towards the officials.

You must also remember to respect your opponents, keep in mind we are brothers and sisters in Christ first, competitors second.

Play hard, have fun, keep your honor and integrity.

Sincerely,

Rick Moran

CYO Director

3) Here is a reminder of the offensive actions outlined in our by-laws (Page 9, Article XIX Section 2).  Please read them to your players & coaches this week at practice or before your next game:

SECTION 2. Offensive Actions
No coach or player is to:
1. Refuse to abide by officials’ decisions.
2. Be guilty of objectionable demonstrations by throwing equipment or any other forceful action.
3. Be guilty of heaping personal verbal abuse upon any official for any real or imaginary wrong decision or judgment.
4. Be guilty of an abusive verbal attack upon any player, opposing coach, official or spectator.
5. At any time lay hands upon, push, shove, strike, or threaten to strike an official, coach or spectator.
6. Be guilty of physical attack as an aggressor upon any player.

SECTION 3. Penalties for Offending Coaches and Players
1. Violation of number 1 through 4 by a coach or player: Minimum automatic 30-day suspension.
2. Violation of number 5 and 6 by a coach: Minimum automatic suspension of offending coach for 1 full year from participating in the CYO Basketball Program.
3. Violation of number 5 by a player: Minimum automatic suspension of offending player for 1 full year from participating in the CYO Basketball Program.
4. Violation of number 6 by a player: Minimum automatic suspension of offending player for 14 days, which must include at least 2 CYO league and/or playoff games.
5. If a suspended coach or player disregards stated penalties, when notified by a proper CYO Area officer, the team is to be suspended from the Diocesan CYO Basketball Program for 1 full year.
6. If necessary, penalties will carry over into the next season.

Lastly, if there is an ejection for any reason please abide by the following (this is from the refs):

When a fan is ejected, they must leave the gym (sight and sound).  A player must remain on the bench or be escorted from the gym with adult supervision.  I would prefer that the player remain on the bench and if they continue to act up that they must be escorted from the game site.  If a suitable escort is not available, the game will be forfeited.
