MARENISCO, MICH. -- The Duluth Padres defeated Marenisco 6-4 in an Upper 13 League amateur baseball game on Sunday at Marenisco, despite getting just two hits.
Winning pitcher Jesse Olson (4-3, 2.18 ERA) allowed three earned runs on nine hits and one walk with nine strikeouts in his fourth complete game of the season.
Marenisco went ahead 3-0 in the fourth inning on a three-run home run by Zach Mahler.
Duluth scored a run in the sixth on an error, but Marenisco answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth on three hits and an error to make the score 4-1.
Anthony Bush singled with one out in the seventh inning to break up Marenisco starter Aaron Holtz's bid for a no-hitter. Duluth scored three runs in the seventh on one hit, four walks, a sacrifice fly, and a hit batsman to tie the score 4-4.
Duluth broke the tie with two runs in the top of the ninth on a walk, an unsuccessful fielder's choice on a sacrifice bunt, and an error.
Robert Brunelle picked up the loss in relief of Holtz. Brunelle allowed two unearned runs on one hit, three walks, and a hit batsman in two and two-thirds innings. Holtz allowed three earned runs on one hit and five walks in six and one-third innings. He had five strikeouts.
Nathan Windschill bunted for a hit to lead off the eighth for Duluth's second hit. Windschill was 1-for-3 with a run scored and Bush was 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Erik Mahler was 4-for-4 with a run scored and Zach Mahler was 2-for-4 with three RBIs for Marenisco (3-6 league).
Tim Nylund, Kevin Hendrickx, and Matt Chruscielski had RBIs for Duluth (6-4 league, 10-12 overall).
Padres Win Two at Ashland
ASHLAND -- The Duluth Padres won two Upper 13 League amateur baseball games over the Ashland C&S Design Protractors at Lumberjack Field on the Northland College campus on Sunday. Both games were seven innings. Duluth's Anthony Bush and Jesse Olson both broke the Padres club record for wins in a season.
Game 1
Bush (5-1, 1.53 ERA) tossed a four-hitter for his third complete game and second shutout this season. He had four strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
Corey Pavlich scored on a passed ball in the fifth for Duluth's first run, and Mike Lewis scored on Chris Musolf's sacrifice fly for an insurance run in the seventh.
Losing pitcher Mark Arbuckle allowed one earned run on three hits, a walk, and a hit batsman. He had three strikeouts in a complete game effort.
Matt Hulmer was 2-for-3 for Ashland.
Game 2
Olson (5-3, 2.08 ERA) allowed one earned run on seven hits and three walks in his fifth complete game of the season. He had three strikeouts.
Bob Baxton was 3-for-3 with a double and a run scored, Don Miller was 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Musolf was 1-for-3 with two RBIs for Duluth.
Losing pitcher Brett Hulmer allowed three earned runs on six hits, two walks, and two hit batsmen. He had two strikeouts in a complete game effort.
Matt Hulmer was 2-for-3 for Ashland and went 4-for-6 in both games.
The Padres are now 8-4 in league play and 12-12 overall. Ashland is now 7-6 in league play.
