ORIOLES TOP TWINS FOR STATE TITLE
DOWNING GOES DOWNTOWN IN THE BOTTOM OF THE FIRST
RIVAS GOES THE ROUTE FOR 5-0 FINAL
GAMBRILLS - Tyler Croson hit a one-out double and rightfielder Joey Downing lifted a one-out opposite-field homer to left field in the bottom of the first inning as the Charles-Saint Mary's League's Pomfret Orioles tamed the Eastern Shore League's Tri-County Twins 5-0 to take the 2024 Maryland Semi-Pro Baseball State Championship on Sunday, August 11 at Arundel High School in Gambrills in Anne Arundel County with the fifth shutout in Maryland Semi-Pro Baseball State Championship Game history. The three most recent State Champions have blanked their fellow finalists. The Twins seemed poised to escape the third frame without further damage when catcher Carson Hughes cut down would-be base stealer Croson whose single subsequent to Austin Simms's safety had put runners on the corners with no one out. Downing's out was unproductive but Anthony Waterloo's two-out single padded Pomfret's lead. Waterloo wished a typical wish, seeking to get into scoring position with two-out but Hughes hosed him with another strike to second base for a second assist of the inning. The Orioles put two more on the board in the fifth after a potential rally-stuffing relay throw failed to turn the twin-killing that could have quelled another crooked-number frame. Starboard-side starting pitcher Noah Covington was assisted from the field due to an anterior cruciate ligament injury with two down in the seventh. Righthanded reliever Evan Nibblett registered four outs. Tri-County threatened in the eighth as Hughes bunted his way on and Brady Lee looked at four pitches for a base-on-balls but Ryland Weaver's line drive to third was stabbed to prevent the potential tie-run from reaching the on-deck circle with no outs and Carson was caught off of the keystone sack for a deflating line-drive double-play. Gavin McIntyre gave the Eastern Shore entity a glimmer with a two-out walk in the top of the ninth but after having issued his fifth free pass, Maryland Semi-Pro Baseball State Championship Game XXVIII Most Valuable Player, route-going righthander Julio Rivas, retired Nibblett on a drive to deep center for a three-hit complete game for 2024 Maryland Semi-Pro Baseball Manager of the Year Jason Simms's squad. Simms secured his second such salutation, his having been selected similarly four years ago in 2020.

Rob Adams and Troy Brohawn comprise the Maryland Semi-Pro Baseball Hall of Fame Class of 2024. Rob was a standout pitcher and first baseman in the Charles-Saint Mary's League, where his athletic abilities and sportsmanship made him a respected figure both on and off of the field. He was recognized as the league's leading pitcher in 1985. He was named a league All-Star Designated Hitter in 1988. He received the loop's Sportsmanship Award in 1991. He played on League Championship teams with Indian Head and American Legion Post 82 in 1984 and 1990.
Rob transitioned into a player/manager role where he continued to leave a significant mark on the league. His leadership and strategic acumen earned him his league's Manager of the Year awards in 1997, 1998, 1999, 2002, 2006 and 2007. The Bumpy Oak Bombers secured seven league titles under his management in 1999, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009. He was a team member for another one in 2012. One of his most remerkable achievements was managing the only undefeated team in Charles-Saint Mary's League history in 2006, culminating in a State Championship.
Rob's dedication to the Charles-Saint Mary's League extended into significant leadership roles, shaping the league's future. He was Vice-President from 2003 to 2005, served as Secretary from 2005 to 2007 and he's been the league's Historian since 2007, dedicated to preserving both the history and the legacy of the league, ensuring that future generations understand and appreciate its rich heritage. He was honored with the league's Jim Speake Award in 2016 for his exceptional service and dedication to the league.
Embodying the spirit of excellence and dedication throughout his career, Rob's leadership and team culture led to league championships in 1984, 1990, 1992, 1999, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2012. His performance on the field, great success as a manager and leadership as a league officer have left an enduring legacy that continues to inspire players, managers and fans alike.
A dominating presence as a pitcher, first baseman and outfielder during two separate periods in the Eastern Shore League, Troy first played with Pepsi in the early 1990s and then played with the Perdue Chicks from 2008 through 2013. He completed 22 of his 39 games started on the mound with Perdue and recorded 29 wins and three saves with an 1.61 Earned Run Average and 1.058 Walks and Hits per Inning Pitched over his 52 career pitching appearances. He also had a career batting average of .311, .426 On Base Percentage and .988 fielding percentage. His 2010 Maryland Semi-Pro Baseball State Championships Semifinal complete game victory helped propel Perdue to that year's state title. He also helped the Chicks to consecutive National Amateur Baseball Federation World Series appearances in 2011-2012 with complete game shutouts in the NABF Regional Championships in both years.
